Despite not really liking the original, I am pretty interested in the FF7 remake. Like a lot of rpg games of its time, it was meant to be played with a walkthrough guide and that's not how I enjoy games. If I wanted to be told what to do and where to go I would have joined the army. gently caress.

some thoughts about games that have graced my emulating clutches:
Final Fantasy Tactics - One of these days I'll play more than the first 3 levels. Not really a big fan of the setting or the non-sprite art.
La Pucelle - oh its Disgaea before the irony poisoning fully set in. The map gimmick is cute.
SD Gundam G Generation Over World- super interesting take on the classic Super Robot Wars format. Nothing is explained.
Persona - more like SMT than what people expected from Persona 3 onward. About 2 hours in and I haven't had to go to class once.

Trying to get Saturn emulation going so I can play the fan translated Sakura Wars. So far a bust on sourcing roms that OpenEmu will recognize.

movies i have watched while under quarantine:

Dragon Quest: Your Story - this is a kid's movie about a video game. if you're a kid or someone who likes video games and anime, you might like this. the ending is good

Jojo Rabbit - i'm in love with Rebel Wilson. i'd have 18 children with her, for Germany. not nearly as much Imaginary Hitler as i was led to believe. please return my calls, Rebel.

The Seventh Seal - this movie is about the plague, you should watch it now, in these trying times.

Army of Shadows - Jean-Pierre Melville's film about the French Resistance. this movie is good, great if you're an ugly old man and need a movie where someone like you is the hero.

Miami Connection - this is a tae kwon do movie made by someone with no talent or movie-making abilities. made me feel like i was dying, not bad enough to be funny. only watch with your friends

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - Dr. Caligari reminded me too much of Dick Cheney. i couldn't stop thinking he was Dick Cheney. i found it very suspect that anyone was impressed by Caligari's story about a guy who never wakes up. not sure why anyone was impressed that the doctor woke the guy up after just taking him at his word that he never wakes up.

Four Journeys Into Mystic Time - this isn't a movie, it's 4 experimental dance films. useful for cred, if you're trying to pick up film snobs. the highlight is One Two Three, the rest are skippable.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night - movie about a vampire girl. it's fine, it's someone's first student film, i think, but it got distribution. a lot of nice visuals that ultimately left me wanting more from the story.

Hardcore - George C. Scott's adventures in the amateur porno industry. pretty good.

The Day of The Locust - Homer Simpson just can't catch a break. made me want to throw up, but in a good way.

Pass Thru - Neil Breen is an artificial intelligence from the future, who has a unique plan to save humanity. made me feel like i was dead.

Rashomon - i heard this is one of the best movies of all time, but you know, it was just ok. before this film, Japanese people did not know how to laugh, so the laughter is a little off and fake-sounding still. disappointing overall.

yea ok

Since I got a Crunchyroll sub again and due to a technical issue with my account even got an extra two weeks, I'm just gonna double down on a bunch of fuckin anime for the next month and a half.

Already watched the aforemention Diamond Is Unbreakable, just finished the first season of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju (excellent excellent excellent, watch it) and watched a couple of episodes of Dr. Stone. Huge shifts in style as both JoJo's and apparently also Dr. Stone are ridiculously over-the-top and Rakugo was a down-to-earth human drama, but hey I like both. Kinda want to watch a josei anime for once so I'm thinking about checking what Chihayafuru is all about when I'm done with Dr. Stone.

I'm interested in other Crunchyroll recommendations if y'all have them, bear in mind I've watched many of the classic/older shows they have and some stuff just isn't available in the EU despite it being on Crunchyroll.

I've found that watching YouTubers review these movies are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more enjoyable than the movies themselves. Especially Hard Ticket to Hawaii, which I watched for the first time since the 80's the other day before going to YouTube and going down that rabbit hole.

If you find a good channel (I enjoy "Good Bad or Bad Bad"), they're great to have on your iPad while teleworking.

HunterXHunter is really good. I don't know whats on crunchyroll though.

Someone asked for Slice of Life stuff before, and I think Azumanga Daioh was my favorite of those back when I watched more anime. I don't know any anime from the last decade+ though?

I also liked Haibane Renmei but I'm not sure that it qualifies as.... uh, not sure what genre it is at all actually :thunk:

Great to see someone else has watched SGRS. Got this recommended when it aired and didn't i

In that same vain, 3-gatsu no Lion is also a pretty good show with the coming-of-age plot, though it's centered aroung Shogi rather than rakugo.

nitially think much of it because 'what is rakugo?', but man, even if you never heard of that before, the whole story drew you in big time.

The Monogatari universe has been massively entertaining but yeah, unless you have a source that has all the shows available, it could be problematic to binge-watch it because the order in which the shows were produced is not the chronological order and you can easily lose context if you miss out one show.

Your post got a little jumbled up there

But yeah show ruled. I also had no idea what rakugo was but the concept was easy to catch onto. I'm now actually pretty interested in it as a form of comedy/theater - big fan of standup comedy, theater as well as minimalism in theater here. Really dug how the fan turned into all kinds of objects in the performances. Cool stuff

gently caress yeah

Also a huge fan of the second credits song. The way they used that track ruled so much, like when Gon finally lands a punch on Hisoka and that riff starts is a ridiculously epic moment

And yeah, Togashi's health deteriorating is very sad. He should probably just write the thing and get someone else to draw it for him or something. I can't believe he wants the manga to remain unfinished

Here's a direct link to the Akagi drama which rules. It looks like it's available for free right now. It rules hard and is a very suspenseful story about a life or death game of a specialized form of Mahjong. I don't understand Mahjong at all, but it did a good enough job explaining what was happening. The gimmick is that 75% of the tiles are transparent and so the opponent can see some (or all) of your hand. It gives off the same vibe to me that Texas Hold'Em does, except instead of the known cards being used by everyone you just happen to know most of the other person's cards.

That's season 1 and has a good ending that made me go "drat, need to read the manga." Unfortunately the two sequel series (total 8 episodes) aren't on Crunchyroll, or anywhere else I can find with English subtitles.

e: Managed to find Seasons 2 and 3, but :filez:.

e2: Forgot to mention it's a period piece set in post-war Japan

Finally checked out Seven Samuri and man you can tell it's the prototype. I am used to tighter plots and there was a lot I'd cut out but it was still a joy. You can basically see the mold of like 100 different movies and characters that came from the performance.

The japanese version of Unforgiven is better than the original as far as I'm concerned. God drat I love it. Dude basically turns into an oni by the end.
