People saying stuff like "Complaining things aren't fair isn't going to get you anywhere!" or whatever are missing the point.

Somebody else, I think it was Communist Thoughts, said that RLB and Sir Haircut are both the Tories' dream opponents in different ways, and they're right, but only because the Tories own the press. Literally whatever leader Labour have doesn't even matter. It could be the second coming of Jesus and the press would still monster them. RLB wouldn't be a bad leader, I think she'd be quite good. Starmer probably won't be a bad leader as such, but I don't think he'll inspire people. In another country like Canada where the Overton window is a razor-thin slit focused on Liberalism, they'd probably loving love him. He's smart, he's centrist, he has a haircut. But both will/would get hosed by the British papers.

That things aren't fair, that things are so nakedly, brazenly hosed up, with people just doing disaster capitalism and other extremely dodgy poo poo and it all just being normalised and in the open is far more important than who the Labour leader is.

So I don't know what the path forward is, I can't offer any solutions, but really I think Labour is no more hosed in terms of electoral chances with Starmer than it would have been with RLB, just in a different way. Not saying that I wouldn't have VASTLY preferred RLB to win for a whole host of reasons, just that I don't think Labour is ever going to get anywhere near power until the right wing papers die off.

Still going to stay a member for now, though.

A lot depends on whether Starmer has actually learned any lessons from the Brown/Miliband era.

Both of them made endless compromises for the sake of some "good press", which was in reality slightly less bad press. Then when an election rolled around they got absolutely monstered while the Tories got an endless tongue-bath, and they both lost and sacrificed their principles.

Hopefully what Starmer took away from 2017 is that the British press is not all-powerful and courting them does not actually win you any favours.

Almost all food vinegar is just that stuff with some brown colouring in it (non-brewed condiment). White vinegar is still cheaper though because it doesn't have to be food-grade. Hell even most brewed condiment is extracted acetic acid + colouring, it's just they get the acetic acid from... I can't remember what they call the stuff strained out in brewing, but that stuff.
Unless the coalition changed things in their bonfire of red tape, you're not allowed to call it vinegar unless it's made from brewed product (which doesn't stop every chip shop in the country, but does stop supermarkets).

You can concentrate it and colour it and all that, but the acetic acid must be from a biological source (making it a biological sauce? :dadjoke:)

Brand name vinegars are pretty obsessive about that, and also usually the ones sending the lawyers when someone tries to call non-brewed condiment vinegar or dares to put Melton Mowbray on a pork pie that was made in Rutland.

But yeah even the cheap vinegar substitute is more energy intensive than acetic acid window cleaner, because you have to get all the methanol out and add a bunch of caramel before you let people consume it, which just makes it a worse window cleaner.

That's a waste of food vinegar.

The vinegar in window cleaner (and cheap chippies) is an industrial vinegar made from methanol or petroleum products, whereas condiment vinegar is brewed, so it's a lot more energy and labor intensive.

Do they sell cleaning vinegar in the UK? Over here you can buy 5l things of it, cheaper than the food stuff. Great for wrapping taps in.

Stardrops has this "white vinegar" cleaner but it has all these warnings like DO NOT LET THIS TOUCH YOUR SKIN so I'm not really sure vinegar is the magic ingredient in that one

Concentrated acetic acid will burn your skin, and technical grade probably still has methanol in, so it's good advice.

the bottle just lists "contains among other ingredients: parfum" which really sounds like they're trying to hide what's in it. So it pretty much is just vinegar in a spray bottle, that's cool

Anyway, I'm glad I vented most of my spleen about Starmer winning this morning/afternoon, it was therapeutic. I stand by the general gist of what I said, which is to say that centrist technocracy won't win an election any time because folks have had their fill of such bloodless policy, but no point going over well-trodden ground at least until we see the great unity shadow cabinet confirmed. It's not, but when you've got the Health Secretary noping out of quarantine after 6 days because he thinks he feels better, no wonder

the official 7 days advice doesn't seem to be based on anything anyway, far as I'm aware it can be 14 days before the antibodies kick in and the virus still sticks around for potentially several weeks. but hey if you want to slow roll everyone catching it while minimising economic disruption from having people stay home, that's one way to do it

I got a Tesco delivery last night and I had a minichat with the driver. He said that while most people were being sensible and taking precautions, he still had quite a few idiots acting like they hadn't heard about any virus. Even with a hosed back I put a dust sheet down on the driveway for the stuff and kept my distance from him.

Also I was reminded of the goon whose mum got shouted at by her neighbour for getting a food delivery. I clocked the curtain twitching bastard across from he at her upstairs window the entire time I was shambling back and forth to bring stuff inside. Society feels incredibly claustrophobic atm. Getting groceries is now a huge event

This is correct in that if you no longer have a fever on day 8 (day 1 is your first symptomatic day) you are “ safe to return to work” from a key worker perspective , cough itself isn’t a sign of infectivity and can last for many days

how torturous is the Universal Credit signup system right now? I've never applied for it before because the idea of having to explain in ridiculous detail how depressed I am sounds like a really bad idea for my continuing survival (and I don't quote need unquote the money), but if right now they're automatically (or near enough) approving everyone then it seems a bit silly not to sign up even if it's only for a couple of months

From what I've been told the main hurdle will be the ID check, if you can stand to wait for the call to confirm it all the rest should be (relatively) simple. You shouldn't have anyone breathing down your neck at an assessment anytime soon at least.

Oh yeah, one of the questions at the press conference this afternoon was about transplanting plasma (containing anti-coronavirus antibodies) from recovered Covid patients into infected ones to speed up the immune response/recovery, which definitely sounds like one of those far too simple to work ideas, but is apparently a thing tried with apparent success on a small scale in China and is being trialled elsewhere around the world.

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2763982 discusses the possible uses of this as a stopgap. TBH I'm more than a bit worried about the implications, particularly of pressuring recovering patients into giving donations and the possibilities for transmission of all sorts of nasties if this is rushed out (presuming they'd bypass a lot of the protections on current blood/plasma donation), but it's certainly interesting.

I've not really been keeping up on this but I've seen three main themes:

- The EHF waves themselves are (unintentionally) the problem, by either damaging the lungs or (brace yourself physicists) changing the oxygen in the air so it can't be absorbed by the lungs
- Semi-related - that Covid is in fact an extreme form of electrosensitivity caused by chakras/orgones/"frequencies"/whatever woo bullshit being disrupted by these frequencies, and this is either an accidental side-effect or is in fact a deliberate attempt to kill all the Indigo Children.
- The general folding-in of it into other conspiracy theories - either these are new, improved mind-control rays convincing people they're ill, or are activating all the heavy metals from the vaccines and the chemtrails, or that the disease is peoples bodies rejecting the nanomachine/neural implants the CIA puts in everyone, or that the disease is real but the vaccine will contain the nanomachines that will be controlled by 5G (this one at least lets them handwave away the fact that the infection/death rate is exactly the same between cities with and without 5G towers).
