sanders' deportation moratorium was a huge fudge aimed at doing just that though immigration is a very tricky issue for left-leaning tendencies because the stated position of international solidarity collides with the practical necessity of protecting the local workers from exploitation and undercutting labour prices the ideal response to this is a robust labour outreach programme of some sort to prevent social dumping, but in places like america where workers have extremely limited power in the first place that is very difficult. add to this straight-up issues of racism and the lack of any working-class representation for the longest time leading to majority-population workers having extremely little trust in the left and you have a very difficult needle to thread this is maybe the single biggest problem of the contemporary western left and nobody's yet managed to tackle it in a satisfactory way

in my country it's maddening because the big labour import policy is regulated by an important free-trade agreement that it's hard to effectively challenge (it would take what amounts to brexit to renegotiate it), and so the whole immigration debate is about *refugees* who end up getting blamed for stuff that has nothing to do with them as our policy becomes ever more draconian and none of the actual concerns are addressed it's hosed up
