I posit that the pallbearer meme has the same issue with the To Be Continued meme, where as the meme becomes more commonplace it atrophies in its efficacy exponentially. Soon, any animated image that features peril will predictably have it featured, turning the last 5 seconds into a punchline that you have already told yourself before you've even seen it Instead you are denied the arguably funnier payoff of the original animation and your expectations have not been subverted, for you have already guessed the ending. The "Wasted" meme avoided this by still allowing you to see the end result of the animation while the punchline was layered over it. I wonder if the kids that would have shot up their schools are killing just themselves or their families instead, or are just not doing it. And if they're not, is it because they don't want to without taking out as many people as possible, or because the school environment is the issue and they're better when they're removed from it? I feel like there are going to be studies done about this some day.
