quote:

A handful of holdout U.S. churches plan to hold in-person services on Easter Sunday, saying their right to worship in person outweighs public health officials’ warnings against holding large gatherings during the coronavirus outbreak.

“Satan and a virus will not stop us,” said the Reverend Tony Spell, 42, pastor of the evangelical Life Tabernacle Church near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He expects a crowd of more than 2,000 to gather in worship at his megachurch on Sunday.

“God will shield us from all harm and sickness,” Spell said in an interview. “We are not afraid. We are called by God to stand against the Antichrist creeping into America’s borders. We will spread the Gospel.”

Yesterday Spell told TMZ that if any of his parishioners die, it will be for God’s glory. “Like any pure religious person, death looks to them like a welcomed friend.”

On a personal level I can't really blame Obama for wanting to stay out of anything and everything related to the current electorate. He already got an endless flood of racist harassment and racist death threats and even the merest bit of Trump provoking things would make it even worse, and now he doesn't have government resources to filter it all out all.

I wouldn't exactly say "Fairly commonly," since 2016 was itself an exception. It was also easier for Trump to win in those primaries as many contests were winner takes all, so he could notch up higher delegate totals on relatively narrow victories. Trump also had enough support to keep winning after the field narrowed, which Sanders was unable to accomplish.

Yeah. Bernie's path to victory relied on that. And on a combination of building his coalition since 2016, and not losing too many Bernie 2016 voters who actually just hated Clinton. Underperforming on both counts hit hard.

This too. Forgot how much Trump got out of winner take all contests.

I literally don't think a Trump strategy works in the Democratic primary. The difference between FPTP and proportional delegates in the Republican and Democratic primaries means that a Trump strategy in 2020 results in a brokered Democratic convention where the majority of of delegates went to moderate candidates.

But I don't think Bernie was running on that strategy, I think he planned to win a majority of delegates outright and just stumbled in South Carolina and the South as a whole.

This is all purely anecdotal so I'm not going to say it's absolutely representative, but both of my larger clients have their WFH plans in place through the summer at a minimum. Lamont is keeping CT schools closed tentatively until May 20th, but the people I know in four different districts are expecting remote learning to continue throughout the entire calendar year. They're already making plans for next year's remote lessons. The most optimistic I can possibly be is that we'll have partial restrictions lifted in June, and that's only if we somehow get our act together with testing.

The White House is full of idiots, but plenty of state governors understand exactly what will happen if they relax guidelines too soon.

The schools here are done. I work for a school district and even though Lamont has closed the schools through May, we're all prepped to be done for the school year. The state has already waved a variety of the state requirements for testing and teacher rating.

They really need to just go ahead and call it so that teachers have as much time as they need to figure out what the end of the year looks like, and parents and students can get ready too.

Yep. My mom and my girlfriend both have administrative positions in two different CT districts and right now their only question is whether or not schools will reopen for the next academic year. Since multiple states are canceling their entire school years I find it really, really hard to believe that general restrictions will be lifted before June.

NYT has models from the government that say that they estimate deaths to swell well into the hundreds of thousands if the stay at home orders are lifted on May 1. I think even The Model that’s overly optimistic that everyone’s using would agree with that as it specifically says that it’s based on the assumption that strict social distancing is kept up nationwide through a minimum of June. So all of May is meant to be under a continued lock down.

https://www.nytimes.com./2020/04/10...l#link-42f8c1fd

The country really cannot begin to open back up before July and by begin I mean a slow rollout of stuff. That’s simply how it HAS to be. If it doesn’t tens of thousands more will die at minimum.

Trump also benefited heavily from the far-right media environment most Republicans engage with, as well as the complete lack of charisma, talent, or appeal among his opposition. Fox viewers and Limbaugh listeners had been primed for someone like Trump for years, a "successful businessman" who "tells it like it is," and "doesn't take poo poo," and even on mainstream networks Trump got a ton of airtime for his insane proposals like the Wall and the Muslim Ban that, as it turned out, ended up being free advertising that hooked people who agreed with those statements. And in comparison, presumptive nominee Jeb! was associated with the utter wreck of his brother's administration, had been out electoral politics for nearly a decade, and generally lacked any kind of charisma or appeal. The entire primary ultimately ended up being a race to the right, and it was a race that Trump was well-positioned to win.

No they don’t. But Greg Abbot of Texas for instance is talking about executive orders to reopen businesses this month BEFORE their states infection peak is even expected to occur. So many states, a lot of big and important states, will tell Trump to gently caress off. But some won’t. And it will be a most expected tragedy.

If the minority vote is getting completely suppressed then no D can ever win so that isn't a good argument against Bernie winning. I think the majority of voters view Bernie as a pretty normal Democrat and he would've had a better chance in midwest states where he would've been able to make a real populist argument against Trump that Biden can't. I'm also not convinced that he would've beat Trump. Just that he was probably our last chance to change the course from a very dark future.

The best part is that those states are going to force other states to maintain lockdowns for much longer. NY or CA can be completely COVID-free, but they won't be able to lift restrictions if TX is in the middle of an outbreak.

Remember that the model that the White House is using for their "optimistic" projections specifically relies keeping lockdowns in place until cases drop below ten. Ten!

Edit- This assumes that states don't get so serious about travel restrictions that they start loving with interstate commerce, but that's an entirely different crisis.

For those in this thread not familiar with the primary model that the government is going off of it is predicting a total of 61k deaths under the VERY VERY specific directions of us doing absolutely everything perfectly for the next 2 straight months nationwide until cases are down into the teens. Meaning nationwide stay at home and strict social distancing the whole time no exceptions. Unfortunately a lot of it’s data is questionable and it’s projections for European nations have been continually underestimating how long the plateau phase will last before eventually declining so there’s a good chance their death estimation is too low but in theory their overall assumptions can work. But if it’s done perfectly. Are you confident we have it in us to do it?

I think he trying that strategy and until everyone dropped out 1 day before super Tuesday, it looked like he was going to get a plurality in a shitload of states with very few other people viable in them netting him a shitload of delegates. The people who dropped out then really all looked like they planned to stay in through Super Tuesday, having all decided against dropping out after other embarrassing showings. I know when I was out volunteering and knocking on doors, Biden never came up as a candidate people were considering and we were much more focused on persuading people from Warren or Pete over to Bernie.

I was listening to Knowledge Fight's coverage of Alex Jones' dumb bullshit over the last few days, and he was hawking Ivermectin as a miracle cure. Of course they weren't telling people to chug deworming medicine, they were just pointing out how effective it was and how easy it was to buy and how you could get apple-flavored paste for horses that tasted bad but worked great. It's already blown up enough that my local news had to cover it and beg people not to self-medicate with it.

Also when I googled Ivermectin to get the spelling right, the first suggested search was "Ivermectin human dose."
