While this sucks hugely, I take comfort in the fact that nobody will have their opinions changed by this obvious abuse of Commonwealth defamation law? Everyone will still know what a piece of poo poo Zak is.

And possibly as a means to threaten people into silence. It won't do anything to anyone who doesn't already know a lot about the abuser named Zak S. Sabbath Smith who likes to poop his pants at Chick Fil-A. But for newbies? Maybe.

Is there a summary of the earlier Zweihander drama about boosting sales and rpgnet and stuff? I can't tell what of that is real and what is just the rpgpundit guy now.

Zweihander didn't have much to do with RPG.net as far as I can recall aside from getting booted there the same reason he was booted here, being incessant shilling. (Nisarg was bounced ages ago, I believe.)

Zweihander goes (or used to go) on deep-discount sale like every other day for a while, which some people speculated was to "game" the marketing-important "metal rating" of the…game. I don't think that's true, and Fox now claims it's definitely disproven thanks to changes to how DTRPG ranks sales. Regardless how annoying he was, dude knew how to move his product. Also, I'm not sure "sold a lot of product by selling it a lot" is any kind of nefarious plot. I dunno why or what shape there is to Fox trying to interact with Pundit. Genuinely sorry for the guy there. And Pundit was booted from RPGnet in like 2004 or something, back in the wild days when you had to be a real shithead to get a perma there.

Was there some theory that some algorithm weights things based on the price as well as the user ratings?

It doesn't really matter anyway, becauseThat Old Tree posted:I'm not sure "sold a lot of product by selling it a lot" is any kind of nefarious plot. It's just the same "set a high base price, then usually have it marked down to a lower price" take-advantage-of-human-thought-patterns sales strategy that clothing stores use.

Like most of their internal mechanisms, DTRPG doesn't explain their metal system very well, and the explanation they give on the sales site especially is not very clear and not strictly true: Here is how it actually works: Copper: 51 units sold Silver: 101 Electrum: 251 Gold: 501 Platinum: 1,001 Mithral: 2,501 Adamantine: 5,001 https://onebookshelfpublisherservice.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360022135314-Bestseller-metals-and-how-to-earn-badges Note that many of these are a simple doubling of the previous level, contrary to the claim being made on the site. Note also that you can pretty much get copper and silver without even trying. quote:We are excited to announce that as of today, March 26, 2020, all "metal rankings" will be merged across all sites, as opposed to being counted uniquely per site. No matter what OneBookShelf site you visit or where customers might have purchased your title, it will show the same metal ranking on all sites. Doing something novel like having banded popularity tiers or actual ranking would be better, because this is still rather easily gamed. As a person who sells on DTR, they're noticeably bush league on a lot of this stuff compared to a larger company and there's lots of irritating problems with their publisher site functionality that could best be described as bugs. -Products remaining at sale price after the sale has ended -The sales report having tons of mystery affiliate codes instead of just telling you what websites users are arriving off of -Insisting that you not have direct links to social media on your page or emails like it's 2003 or something, which I can only imagine a lot of sellers quietly ignore -Having a weird publisher credit system to send publisher emails, run site banner ads, or set deals of the day (absolutely not worth it in my experience compared to running your own sale) -General sales page stuff randomly not working (page previews) -Generally pretty janky controls for uploading new content to sell Compounded with a lack of visibility into how DTR runs its site generally it can get a little frustrating. Generally I've had success with my interpretation of the Steam model of selling, which is (A) Post new free expansion content so it automatically appears on the front page (B) Put your core paid content on deep discount (C) Wait for the money to pay that month's electricity bill to roll in ...With steadily increasing sales activity over time the more I follow this model. I don't do any offsite marketing and I don't use a Facebook product page, because it's Facebook. People who bought the stuff already are happy you're continuing to support your product, and new people can get in cheap. You can see by the minimal scaling of the metal sales numbers that there's lots of people on the site barely moving anything, that are essentially making a little bit of grocery money off their hobby.

Off the current topic, but if I wanted to start selling some of the RPG stuff I've written as PDFs, what's the best way to go about that? I'm ok with the writing and layout type stuff, but I'm completely lost when it comes to the selling part. I assume DTRPG etc are the way to go, but I don't even know how they pay you, let alone what kind of stuff I'd need to set up to get it all started. Has anyone written a primer/howto that someone can point me at, or could someone who sells their creations give me a basic starter rundown?
