Well, it's not the same here sadly :( They will intersperse the SCREM with renditions of "it's ok, be nice, be a good bird, stop it, be a good birdie sweet birdie" I start to sing songs and they look at me for about 10 seconds, and then it's like, "Ah hell nah....you will NOT outdo the song of teh SCREM" and proceed to try to drown me out lol

I'm not sure if its because I don't sing well (in their world) or if they are thinking it is my version of the SCREM song and they need to outdo it. Either way, my ears ring :(

lol on our street we have a special needs little boy who plays in the street in front of our house. (Don't worry, he always has an adult with him) Trev has decided that since everything the light touches is his kingdom, this kid should not be playing quietly where he can be seen. So, he SCREM at him. The first time, the poor kid was scared and jumped up. That made Trev's day. So of course now when he sees him, he must SCREM at the evil intruder.

So today, he sees this kid walking with his dad, and proceeds to do the whole SCREM from the open front door (the storm door was shut and the window was open....it wasn't a way for Trev to go on full ATTACC) and make him jump hahaha routine. This time, tho, he SCREM back at Trev. Trev was shocked...and SCREM at him....and again the little boy SCREM back. Me and his dad were laughing at the SCREM contest between the two....Trev finally gave up and decided to go in the kitchen and pretend nothing happened. The little boy was very proud of himself and strutted home with a laughing dad, and Trev spent a good few minutes pouting in the kitchen lol

The little boy came back a few minutes ago and looked at the house, and Trev looked at him and pointedly ignored him hahaha

So a while back, I posted a picture of our chickens, just to share.

Recently, little Rhys decided to actually hop on the swing my wife spent so much time putting together

Then, after a moment of weakness at the hardware store, my wife and stepson come home with two chicks. They're currently unnamed until we can at least have an idea on sex since we can't keep roosters in town.

After seeing the post about the new chicks, the lady we got the two big girls from offered us an Easter Egger, so now we also have Luna added into the mix. Poor thing is so little and scared right now. She wants a human around for protection from the other girls and the cat.

Bonus video. If you've never had chickens run right at you, you're missing something quite hilariously special. Hopefully I don't gently caress it up.

After years of waiting to get a cockatiel, I'm finally at the point of everything aligning to make it an option. The pandemic has changed things (to say the least), and I'm currently working from home. I'm not sure if that makes it a great time to get one (I'd be home full time while it's settling in, good bonding time) or a terrible time (I'd be setting it up for unrealistic expectations, could cause separation anxieties down the road when I have to return to work). Thoughts?

If you get a young bird who's only just fledged, having lots of time together is a good chance. The first few weeks are irreplaceable for bonding.

My only question would be when the world returns back to normal, how much time will you normally be at work? Do you have any family, significant others, or room mates who share your living space?

In my experience with three lady cockatiels throughout most of my life, they are a lot more forgiving when it comes to work schedules. My second cockatiel, Wandy the Elder, put up with me having a full time work schedule and wasn't distressed by it. But I think you need to take an honest inventory of how your life will look when everything is normal. A healthy cockatiel can live 20-25 years, so you need to have a good understanding of the commitment as well.

Still, cockatiels are the best. :derptiel:

I will say that if you work an 8-hour job, a cockatiel is in my experience a pretty great parrot to have, in terms of their mental health and yours. Maybe I was just lucky, but both the cockatiels I had as an adult were essentially the same when I worked a 40 hour week job and when I wasn't working for a few years.

Anything more than that I can't really speak to. But if you're just an average corporate fucko like me, they're pretty great. If I ever get another parrot it will 100% be a cockatiel.

Living alone, no SO or housemates, standard 9-5 job government fucko. Not my first cockatiel (grew up with a family pet, rip Weary the Weiro), just the first time I've been in a position to get one without it being irresponsible to the bird for various reasons. I've often had cockatiels and lived alone. They got to spend a lot of time with me when I was home, so they seemed to cope with being alone just fine. I've always considered cockatiels mentally "hardy.'

As long as you have the ability to pay for vet visits and a plan for what happens if you get hit by an anvil (trust me, it happens) I'd think you're good to go.

Hi guys - see thread title. Since our week of bird quarantine is up and everyone has had some time to acclimate, I thought I'd introduce Fontana. I'm still really worried Bradbury's constant, continuous screaming is indicative he's unhappy or something, (he's certified healthy and has had a cage change, a move to a location closer to where we sit, constant new toys, new food, music, tv, everything) and I know I've been posting for a while we were considering getting him a cage mate again. The behaviour didn't manifest immediately after Huxley passed, but it never happened with they had each other.

Booge came home with a horrible clip, but thankfully a week later they're already starting to grow out.
Fontana in the travel cage the day we brought him home:

Honestly, he's so much more chill than Bradbo and seems a little confused as to why this new bird is turned up to 11. No fights have occurred and they seem to be sharing a space well, so I'm hopeful.

It was a beautiful day here in Seattle...blue skies, a soft breeze and a nice bit of sunshine.

It was a day meant to send the birds outside in their travel cages to get some fresh air and enjoy the sounds of nature.

Apparently Trevor took this time outside to ramp up his inner horndog...and he has been trying to shag me every time I turn around lol He goes after my elbow, my ear, my hand...and even a cold shower didn't help much. He resorted to going after a toy in his cage after he was sent to his room. He had the nerve to stare at me the whole time lol

I was originally worried that he would be going after Cricket, but apparently she isn't his type and I am....ugh. I so hope he gets over these urges soon!!! Between this and his diving into anything he considers slightly possibly nesty, its really giving me a run for my money :(

Little pervbird tried to barf for me earlier too. I suppose I should be flattered but....ack.

And my husband does nothing but laugh and egg him on too. I'm so outnumbered lol

Those groups normally end up being depressing. There are some people who are very good bird owners with amazing birds. But it seems that for each good group owner there is some iteration of, "Looking to re-home my one year old bird she is super sweet but we have cats/allergies/moving/other-lovely-excuses-for-we-bought-this-animal-on-an-impulse rehoming fee $500" or the even worse "I CANNOT GO TO VET FOR REASONS MY CAT JUST ATTACKED MY PARAKEET HOW DO I FIX?!?!" with horror show pictures of a poor bird near death.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'm against parakeets in particular being so "cheap". Not that price is always a deterrent with impulse purchasers.

So due to the pandemic, I'm having a harder time finding seed mixes for my birds. The only bags I can find and order were for conures/lovebirds so a lot of the items in it are a bit too big for my budgie, I end up sifting the larger bits and putting them aside.

They don't love pellets but I really really need them to start eating what I have in the house, so I took the piece of wood those bird treats come attached to and I soaked a bunch of pellets and rolled them with millet

They ignored it for a bit, so I put it in the fridge for a bit and reintroduced it later.

success! They've since completely demolished it. I guess that's one way of serving pellets.

Yeah, my local parrot group is the same. I did get Ozzy through it, because someone had had a bunch of mistreated cockatiels dumped on her and she needed to find them proper homes, but the cute pictures come at a high price.

It's always a one year old bird, isn't it? My favourite was the bird being rehomed that I had seen at one of the local pet stores (the terrible one that I don't go in anymore) and I did the math and they'd had that poor conure for six months, tops.

Sweet poor baby :( Amadeus had been returned to the pet store for being bitey before I bought him, and he can be nippy when he's worked up but that's... being a conure. I am very glad he was returned but I can't help but be a little mad at that person for doing that to him.

Speaking of being bitey, he's actually been way better about it since we've had Charlemagne :) Charlie is very careful with his beak and two years in (plus another half of knowing each other) has yet to bite me at all. I think Ama noticed that and realized Hey, I don't need to be mean when I'm annoyed!

Plant Monster, I love that pellet treat stick idea and what a good way to use up the stray millet at the bottom of the bags. I think I might try it!

I know for a fact cockatiels can draw blood. Once, Serra tried to nip the drawstring to my shorts when they were covered by my t-shirt but got my gut and holy hell, it nearly made me jump a mile.

But my lady tiels have never done anything worse than give me an angry, hissy pinch.

At the parrot store, I’ve been proper bit by a few birds. But when that African Grey tried to remove my forearm for hugging his “girlfriend” I literally didn’t know what to do. Pain isn’t a huge deal to me, but I was befuddled about the next step. I just sorta turned my forearm so the grey was hanging upside down and politely shook him until he let go. He was probably latched on and grinding to bite for ten seconds.

I still have the scar from that bitey bird. If an animal chomps me out of nowhere - trust is pretty permanently broken for me.
