Last night I watched the Star Trek TNG episode "Half a Life", where this guy is trying to re-ignite a dying sun to save his planet, and his first experiment fails. He thinks he might be able to get it right with a little more time, but he is also a few days away from turning 60, and everyone in his species does ritual suicide the day they turn 60. He briefly considers defying them to finish his work, but they make it perfectly clear that even if he figures out a way to save the planet, they'll reject it out of spite. So he gives up and goes off to die, saying he isn't the one to lead this revolution. That's Bernie now.

WIGOP got hosed up and curbed by their own bullshit trickery. trump has another proof that everything he touches gets hosed up and dies. trump legit went mental on tv and is clearly trying to open poo poo way too early and is playing at mad king bullshit with loving NK propaganda videos and the news is actively making GBS threads on him.

The really, really great thing about this viral pandemic and the related economic collapse is that it gives trump an incentive to get the hell out of the White House and an excellent excuse to lose. more proof that the lame duck period is one of the most destructive flaws in our government the fact that you can lose an election and go "well gently caress yooooouuuu now I'm gonna do every poo poo-rear end thing I was too afraid to do before the election, you're gonna PAY!" is just nuts in the UK when people lose an election they get to go back to their offices and clear the gently caress out, they don't get to pass a bunch more laws and decide a bunch more court cases afaik E: on the other hand, lame duck legislation is why Evers had no power to delay the election in the first place, giving Republicans the opportunity to hugely piss off the entire state by forcing them to vote in a pandemic, so really it's impossible to say whether the lame duck period is good or bad VitalSigns fucked around with this message at 02:32 on Apr 14, 2020 |

One of the most infuriating things about Trump (for me at least) is how he believes his own bullshit. Yes he lies constantly, but most of the time there's no intention or guile to it. To deliberately lie about something you have to be aware of what the truth is, and I don't think Trump really distinguishes between "truth" and "falsehood" relative to his own actions. True vs. false only exist in an oppositional, us vs. them sense. Trump is always correct and amazing and incredible, his enemies are always wrong and nasty and liars. As long as you agree with him, you're a great person, maybe even the greatest! If you disagree with him you're a liar and fake, you're a loser and he never even really knew you. I think that appeals to chuds because it's an extremely simplistic worldview which requires zero consideration or critical thinking. You start from the premise that Trump is always right and the enemy is always wrong, the what doesn't matter. It's pure, distilled tribalism.

The lame duck session is partly why Lincoln was able to swing some Democrats into agreeing to vote on the abolition amendment. It's just one of those things where it can be used for good, but when used for ill, it's really used for ill. Perhaps in the modern day of revolving door politicians joining corporate boards it may mitigate the worst harm even if it means losing some good to close up the lame duck sessions.
