On a related note, I found a page with the covers of all the IKEA catalogs from 1951-2018.
http://www.home-designing.com/2013/07/ikea-catalog-covers
It''s interesting how their style evolved (or didn't) over the years
Starts out basic MCM

enter Scandinavian design - I'm pretty sure you can find identical furniture and cabinets at IKEA now

I did not realize the POANG chair had been around this long

Horrific. Pointlessly big room, enough so that you can hear everyone else clattering around in the kitchen or watching TV, but you’re not close enough to have a conversation.

The proportions are all wrong, it’d need a way higher ceiling to look right. And then it’d be a basketball court.

More accurate to call it a fabulous 19th century Tudor revival house? I mean it was built in 1885; it’s practically a national treasure. I don’t like some of the modern touches done to it; but it’s a pretty stunning house.

I think that blue is a bit on on the green side if that's what you want. I should have mentioned this before, but if the tile keeps loving up your choices can just use a refinisher kit to turn it white. You'll need to be able to live without the bathroom for 24hrs, but otherwise it's a really easy process.

And I do hate minimalism, but minimalism gone wrong is like a million times worse. What I especially love to hate is the drat archeologist's office thing that pops up in so much of it. The modern art pieces I get, but then there's always an old bust, or some drat pottery to really sell what a tasteful connoisseur of culture you are. Because when I think not an ostentatious display of wealth, I think suit of samurai armor in the living room.

Hmm yeah that's weird.

I agree that some minimalist stuff is super expensive which is dumb. I have mostly Ikea stuff though and a few items from Blu Dot (that I definitely did not pay full price for).

I think neutrals are the only good choice for walls though. But it could be any sort of neutral, not just a gray.

Minimalism isn’t: Buying furniture which costs 100x what anyone else would spend on furniture, because no other furniture that isn’t thousands of dollars per piece can possibly be useful or aesthetically appealing.

Why is it so expensive in 2020, given that it was designed decades ago, and can be mass produced from cheap materials?

So that design patent fees can be paid to a company which a long dead man worked for in the 60s, because that benefits society, somehow.

You don't have to spend an insane amount of money to buy something that can last a long time though. There's certainly an enormous middle ground.

There's even some super cheap Ikea stuff I have that has lasted for as long as I've had my home (nine years). It certainly depends on the function. If it's just a little table to hold an item, I won't want to spend much at all, but if it's a couch or a bed that will certainly change.

Also styles constantly change, so I feel like it's rare for people to keep furniture items several decades.

Minimalism has two different widely accepted definitions:
- a lifestyle of buying less, owning less, simplifying
-an aesthetic - clean lines, few colors, lack of ornamentation, leaving out everything but what the bare essence of an object is
One does not necessarily have to follow the other. You can have a lavish lifestyle and buy designer furniture with a minimalist aesthetic. You can live a minimalist lifestyle and buy ornate antique furniture from the thrift store.

My point was that having Minimalist furniture (or art, or music) doesn't mean you're defining yourself as a minimalist. Living in a Craftsman house doesn't mean you identify with the Arts and Crafts social movement, even though I wish it did because that movement is directly relevant to your second point.

by the way if anyone is interested in the intersection of early 20th century socialism and early 20th century art and design The Craftsman is required reading. http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/DLDecArts/DLDecArts-idx?type=browse&scope=DLDECARTS.HOMEDESIGN

The profit margin of an Aalto stool is insane but it has to be for people to have any interest in buying one BUT it is also possible for me to sit on an Aalto stool and not have it splinter under my enormous bulk, very much unlike the IKEA knock-off, as I have learned to my own and my friend's (whose IKEA stool it was) detriment.

(I didn't buy an Aalto, I inherited a few. Also they're the three-legged kind, dunno if they still make them.)

One of my childhood fears was toilet snakes. Actual live snakes emerging from toilets, not the kind from your butthole. So seeing this is giving me all sorts of bad vibes. You need a clear line of sight to the toilet to ensure toilet snakes are NOT snaking up on you, personally.

Also why is there a metal hanger for a curtain around the toilet area? For the bashful shitters? We can still hear you blasting rear end over the sound of frying eggs around the corner, bro. I do hope there is a sink half hidden by the post on the right of the image. Where do you wash your hands? Actually the bathroom is genius in that people can and will know who to shame for not washing their hands after toilet use.

Now that you mentioned it, yes. And now the fear of those flesh eating scarabs from The Mummy staring Brandin Fraser and that white lady [who was a reincarnation of a black african lady] are combing with my fear of toilet snakes. Thanks!
