This is pretty cool, one of the people in the ex HMV employees Facebook group was cleaning out their place and came across the tape that was made about Oasis's visit to the Superstore in downtown Toronto. https://youtu.be/PLayCFuZt7A This is pure 100% unfiltered 1995. Also before they became the biggest prima donna koounts in music.

I always thought this movie suuuuucked from the trailers. But then I watched it about a decade ago, and yea, its fine. Its a lot smarter than the trailers let on and didn't rely on "lol aren't kids into music WEIRD?" as much as I though it might.

It’s also came out right as grunge was taking off but it was clear the writers didn’t want to change anything because the band and their tastes play towards a more arena rock like music and some metal, yet they dress very grungy. There is a throw away line Brendan Frasier says to the DJ when talking about “good” music along the lines of ‘none of that crap from Seattle’ and it’s just dumb because they definitely should be on that wave. Aside from that it is an underrated movie and one of the better ones that has some longevity. Unlike Empire Records which is just loving terrible and unwatchable. Also maybe sacrilege but I recently tried watching Waynes World 2 and it is definitely awful. Has some moments but it is really relying on good graces built up from Waynes World 1 to pull it through. dialhforhero has a new favorite as of 14:22 on Apr 15, 2020 |

Yeah I don’t know how you love Airheads and hate Empire Records. IMO, Airheads is fine but Empire Records is way better. But I’m no film critic Plus I admit that I do have skin in the game since I say this all the time: “drat the man! Save the empire!”

It’s something that is to me only good from nostalgia but watching it again now it’s a bit insufferable. It is, however, a perfect zeitgeist of the 90s. But that doesn’t necessarily mean quality. I think Airheads is better because of the kind of comedy it is (unlike, say, Austin Powers) and it isn’t terribly topical or at least doesn’t rely too heavily on those montages of ‘here’s the latest popular alt rock band music playing while teens and twenty somethings live their zany life’ thing. Another great example of non-topical humor that holds up is Dumb and Dumber. Empire Records isn’t a laugh comedy and is very topical. My comparison with Austin Powers: it doesnt work anymore because it pulls from the events of the time only, so the jokes land flat outside of the era. Clinton jokes? Yeah... It’s like listening to some old comics do their stand up from decades ago. Eddie Murphy is loving cringe. So I guess in summary Empire Records is just contrived and annoying. I will absolutely tell people to watch it but it isn’t a 90s film I think that lasted. dialhforhero has a new favorite as of 15:43 on Apr 15, 2020 |

Yeah Empire Records isn't bad-bad, but I mean, it's basically the primordial soup that Mall Punk like Blink 182 and Sum 41 came from, and all the corporate "faux rebelliousness" that implies. Airheads wasn't amazing but aged way better, plus it's just fun to see Adam Sandler do a supporting role in anything.

I remember, after watching Airheads (it was either on VHS or Comedy Central), my dad told me the story of how my parents went camping once and my dad very carefully kept the tuning perfect for the station he listened to all the way to the campsite, only for it to change formats when it was time to return home.

Yeah, their musical stance is wweeeird. I want to say the van they roll around in at the beginning had some solid band stickers plastered, and there's that joke about Lemmy. Their last song is a cover of a Regan Youth track, but yet their just dream is apparently just to be a big hair metal band?

Columbia House sent me the Airheads soundtrack back when it came out, and I remember it being pretty decent. Looking at the track list now, it does seem to have a weird mix of artists but it didn’t feel that way at the time.

They lean into insufferably bad character traits and it all kind of just comes together at the end in an unearned fashion that doesnt redeem any of them. Perhaps I should give it another shot but I tried honestly to watch it in my late 20's and it just did not work.

I must say, the lyric "I'm still a virgin and i'm 33, even Madonna won't have sex with me" still makes me laugh. Also the end of that seems like a joke but that's some real poo poo being on airwaves in the early 90s. Also, you can tell they HAAAAAAAAATED white people doing black music, like in that Michael Bolton parody, but it's even more venomous in Imposter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y1da7FqyTw

I just finished JoJo's Diamond is Unbreakable and dang, it kinda put this song in my head, i was kind of surprised hearing it too. Though with a Pidgin named Savage Garden I don't think i should have found it that surprising. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KztNIg4cvE That video looks really expensive, and then Savage Garden is more known for their slow song where the video is just the singer walking through Paris (i think). Erasure was somehow recommended to me based on liking NIN (and Depeche Mode, there is an obvious trend here in retrospect) and man a cold listen to one of their albums just filled me with angsty rage. But that is quite the track. Bonus for cultural appropriation and use of a stunt double. And that level of potato-headed front man we didn’t see again until Ed Sheeran. Basically this is extremely my poo poo.
