Is the UKMT in freefall? have avoided it since the Roni got going. Ireland is accused of antisemitism anyway due to wide spread support for Palestine.

UKMT has had a lot of interesting stuff happen in it post Covid.

What I found most interesting was because the UK's health measures were way behind Ireland, the social side of things was like watching a news report from two weeks in the past but in real time.

So while we had panic buying and shortages happen in our shops when the lockdown was first announced on the 12th/13th of March, you got to see people experiencing it in that thread near the end of March.

Currently because the thread is very pro socialist and pro Labour the last few days have been focused on Stammer's election to Leadership and now about the leaked report within the Labour party.

Also personally whenever they talk about someone "catching the 'Rona" I always read it as someone "catching the "Roni." And I get this image of a viral outbreak of moustaches.

As for Palestinian, that is done as part of this whole plot to conflate anyone who is Anti-Israel as being Anti-Semitic.

And while I am sure all Anti-Semite are Anti-Israel, there are definitely people who are against the government of Israel and their actions without being Anti-Semitic.

This is not a safe thing to assume. Many of the USA's rabidly pro-Israel types only want the country to exist because they believe it needs to so as to fulfill biblical prophesy and they can be all "HAHA FUKKAN TOLD YIS" to the Jewish people when Jesus comes back and smites them all.

You'd think so but there is a particular weird brand of antisemitism that is pro israel because they think it fulfils biblical prophecy and while judaism is clearly wrong and inferior it's necessary to bring about the rapture.

It's very visble in the Left Behind movies and books.

Nah, there's quite a few antisemites who are pro-Israel, either because they're wingnut religious right who believe that Israel has to exist so that Armageddon can happen, or the more straightforward reason that it's a good place to send the Jews so that they don't have to live near them. Or they're just generally racist but hate Muslims slightly more than Jews.

Mary Lou McDonald had coronavirus. She just got the results back from a test she did 2 and a half weeks ago.

Wonder how Blueshirts can say we are testing on par with South Korea, when their turnaround on results is 6 hours from the samples arriving at a lab.

My mother was like this at the start.
Shes in her 70s and all her life has been that stereotype irish mother shopper where she would go around 30 shops for 5 hours while not buying anything, only to return to the first shop to get the first item she looked at.
She lives with my brother and he's been telling me she was wrecking his head with 'Sure the virus wont be in Argos or Aldi. Ill wear my wool gloves. Ill be only 5 minutes.' 5 minutes mum time is 2 hour real time usually.
Then the stories started about how you will die alone and buried with no fanfare, she has wised upto not going out.

:( that would be the tactic of very last resort -if I told him that he'd probably turn it around like I was hoping that he'd catch it and end up dying all alone. He can be extraordinarily passive-aggressive.

Anyway, I went to lidl and got a fairly big shop including a fancy bakery loaf, so hopefully that'll satisfy him for the time being. Ty for sharing, it's a weird relief to hear about other people's infuriating families :unsmith:

I heard that mary-lou wasn't feeling too bad so I though that might be why her test wasn't as urgent as it might otherwise have been, but apparently she ended up with pleurisy?

My dad started out saying sure he lived long enough if he gets it. I told him to gently caress off and that he wouldn't be just killing himself, he'd be killing my mam too. That shut him up but once people get to a certain state it just gets depressing.

It is slightly horrifying emotionally, but its also entirely reasonable/logical - if two people need a ventilator and one of them is an otherwise healthy 60 year old, the other an 84 year old with an underlying health condition, you have to give it to the person who'll get the most life years out of living. Its basically just a outcome based variant of triage, a system thats used in every ER/A&E room across the globe.

The system for ranking people's priority has to be codified/written down, because that way medics on the front line can just refer to it and instantly have the choice made for them - instead of having the 'power' in their hands, and all the emotional damage that would result for them.

This is such a universal dilemma that we actually have a 3700 year old triage checklist from bronze age Egypt.

She and John Waters are representing themselves. I think that says everything you need to know about the strength of their case and the willingness of lawyers to take on said cases even with plaintiffs like these who are likely to have real money to pay them.

Well anyone who thinks that Kevin Myers is a good writer has questionable taste in English. And is probably a misogynist too.

The mention of Pantygate reminded me of RTE's cowardly behaviour. (Immediately issued an apology and paid large sums of money to the complainants.)

I remember from talking to a number of barristers at the time that they said RTE shouldn't have folded, and they'd have a good case to just fight the case. In fact some of them said that they would probably have represented RTE for free just to have the excuse to cross examine Waters or any of the people from the Iona Institute.

A postal vote would be incredibly easy to organize if Martin actually wanted to. FF have what, about 20,000 party members? Millions of postal ballots at a time are regularly cast all around the world for elections these days, 20k wouldn't be a remotely difficult logistical proposition.

If Martin tries to force through a contentious FG coalition as a fait accompli, without giving the membership any say, I wouldn’t be surprised to see an O'Cuiv-heave. Or maybe even a group of the more Republican FFers splinter off under O’Cuiv.

If the Greens don't bite on the government, then if O'Cuiv got even 6-7 FFers to leave with him then any potential FF/FG/IND government wouldn't have a majority.

How is 43% unemployment, and rapidly increasing, bad?

A huge chunk of those people aren't going to walk back into a job, and a 'normal' economy as it was in February, on May 5th.

This could result in another decade of austerity if it gets much worse.
