Noted non-racist poster TGA, who recently requested a month's prob because he can't control himself on the forums, now "ironically" calling himself a white supremacist while "ironically" being mad that someone made a crack about white people. Thank god he's "ironically" defending the white race instead of being probed and having to spend time with his family

No, no, you see it is an independent entity providing independent news independently and free of US government control or bias. It is, in fact, operated by the CIA, one of the most globally informed entities in the world, not the USA government.

this is the key bit:

Local metropolises are scrambling to draft laws to expand the scope of online censorship in video games and even prohibit gamers from meeting and chatting with people on the other side of the Great Firewall, according to LTN, which cited news from a Chinese gaming forum.

Source is: https://3c.ltn.com.tw/news/40113 and https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3916690
the latter references the former but also includes an extra bit at the end

Please, it'd be "an American gaming forum", i.e. Gamefaqs.

Well as it turns out, the LTN article isn't mentioning a gaming forum at all either (going from how DeepL translates it). Now I'm curious why the Taiwan News article in English talks about that as a source when it looks less than credible.

quote:

Is the world going to be clean "outside the walls"? China will ban online games with foreign players!

Following last week's launch of Gather! After "Animal Moriya," according to a Chinese gaming website, the Chinese government is expected to introduce the strictest gaming ban in history, which includes a ban on "co-serving" between China and other countries, meaning that Chinese players are prohibited from playing online with foreigners and can only play on servers that are reserved for Chinese players. The draft of the ban has already appeared in the municipalities directly under Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong, and is expected to be extended to the whole of China in the near future.

The new ban also requires that in addition to the inability to advertise or launch features such as "global common server" and "multi-national player online chat", existing related features should also be removed immediately. In particular, "skinning games", which are games that are slightly remodeled from an old game and relaunched under a new name, will also be explicitly banned.

Other bans related to Chinese players include requiring real name authentication when purchasing or downloading single-player or "peer-to-peer" connected games, and requiring all players and gaming platforms to implement a real name system. Also, the game can't show zombies, plague, etc. to avoid linking to Wuhan Pneumonia.

The ban also condemns players for using some of the game's "map editing", character costumes, and union functions to build organizations and "promote the idea of secession", in effect confirming that there are players in "Gather! Animal Moritomo satirizes Republican Xi Jinping, which is indeed the reason why the game was taken down.

In addition, the new ban also prepares to reorganize and re-examine the game industry's version numbers, and also prohibits underage players from playing online between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. on alternate days, and from playing online for more than 3 hours on legal holidays and 1.5 hours on weekdays; players aged 8 to 16 are also limited to a monthly "lesson fee" of no more than RMB 200, and players aged 16 to 18 cannot exceed RMB 400.

Isn't some of that stuff from a bill that was passed some time ago? I remember reading about those play time restrictions before. And don't MMOs already operate separate servers in China, too?

Cao Ni Ma
May 25, 2010

Yes, chinese version of MMOs run in partnership with local companies to set up the infrastructure and do any changes that are required by law. Like showing bones in WoW or too much skin in B&S as well as changes to monetization if required.

This is not a very good source of anything.

I think it's wholly unrealistic that the number of infected in China wasn't at least 5 digits, if only because you have to account for asymptomatic carriers and people who didn't or couldn't get tested. But I don't really think there's any reason to spread around baseless speculation on the numbers like this, either.

True, the caveat is there's no way to verify and it's just gossip. But wechat gossip is how people get their news since official media won't do a deep dive into anything negative and there's no way to verify official narrative anyway, besides weibo posts and wechat groups...

I mean they just banned Animal Crossing because Hong Kongers and Taiwanese were making islands with political slogans and using the chat app to harass mainlanders I guess?
