I'm sure if we can dig up an aircraft that can move the thing that we could also find some dudes to physically steal it, surely the aircraft cost would dominate that budget. But as much as this is impractically absurd as a suggestion now I kind of want to see somebody attempt it because it's so ridiculous. What's the negative if our Chinook or whatever gets shot down?

Disappointingly as far as I can tell all of CMO's C-130s have a 450m minimum runway length. No JATO here (not even in the Cold War database). C'mon devs where's my Credible Sport??

i mostly want to blow up the automated rail because gently caress rio tinto, even if that picture isn't representative it's making me mad. the bridge is close to what looks like civilian houses so if we are going to blow it up it'd be a good candidate for Zeeba to laser designate.

Yooper posted:

Goudomaria it is!

Our good friend Zebba is chilling in Kano ready for another mission.

Somewhere between Goudoumaria and the boundary ring road is at least one hostile air base. The aircraft that have been raiding the mining facilities all have short legs. But it is a big rear end area and the forces are doing a good job operating out of camouflaged facilities. Traffic is pretty light in the area too so we can't use the ole Instagram method.

To clarify the mission goal, all we need to do is keep the facilities from being destroyed. It's an added bonus if we can counter strike. Squadron Ops sees a break in the weather and it's likely we'll see a hostile strike.

Next bonus is the Durkuma automated railroad bridge. We don't have a current photo, but it's just east of the city of Durkuma. It's a multi lane switch bridge that would really put a snag in ore shipments potentially requiring the Triumvirate to shift them through Cameroon.

Finally, at about 310 nm away, is a very capable GroundMaster radar. We used to have one, it works great. Too great. That said it's a stretch to get there and we'll run into god knows what as counter air forces. We're into middle Triumvirate territory so it'll be someone else besides HAMMER. Potentially Mangosteen Enterprises or RuTuCo.

You can start planning a mission now if you'd like and put Zebba as a piece for intel or lasing. Or you can use him for pre-op intel. If the thread calls for Intel we'll send him into the wilds for a better look.

Negatives

Loss of prestige which leads to less available special munitions. That said performing daring operations can guarantee a minimum level of special munitions.

Alright, I'm envisioning an op in two three stages. The first, fulfilling our contractual obligations, involves maintaining a BARCAP along the border and vectoring Eagles at things. Probably allocate four to six? The second is a deep strike SEAD mission (ingress NOE? follow a river? i dunno lol), the third is a combined Escort/CAP and CAS package to steal the radar via Chinook, Halo, or other medium/heavy-lift helo. Cargo plane is probably a no-go due to terrain and cargo; look at this thing, you'd need to disassemble it to fit in a plane and you'd need a truck to move it. The big difficulty here is that just about every helicopter I've looked at in the database has a max speed in the ballpark of 150 to 180 knots (capacity varies from 10-20 tons), and the radar itself is 310nm from the border which is a 2 hour trip each way, so we'd probably be looking at a five-hour long op assuming one hour to rig the radar for airlift. This is enough to be its own thing, I think, might even need to rent a tanker.

Either way, we should definitely hit the rail bridge just to keep our strike assets tasked. I figure lighting that up is a good job for our drones, shouldn't be hard. We can task Zebba to locate the concealed airfields and decide what, if anything, to do about them once we've got some intel worth talking about.

Another thing to note; the Groundmaster is 310nm behind the border, but it's only got a range of about 275nm. Apparently there are Mi-8 Hip varients with OECM, if we ever wind up running a helo squadron might be worth looking into those.

edit: land a herc on the highway near the groundmaster, hire the local 12 Guys With Truck franchise to pack the radar, drive it down the hill, load it on the herc, and fly off? hercs make about 320-350 knots depending on variant so only an hour transit each way but we'd probably wind up making up the time in loitering for a few hours while the moving company does their thing. this is still basically its own bonus mission haha

...on the plus side I'm feeling much more angry now than I expected so this totally helps me get in character.
Here's our public basing information.

There's Aérodrome de Gouré near Goure. 1500m dirt airfield. Maybe the government has upgraded it after operations started.
Maine-Soroa supposedly has an airfield, but I have not been able to locate any information about it. I suspect this is more an area set aside where bush planes can land, rather than any real facility. Nevertheless it may be operational at this time.
Diffa Airport has a 1900m asphalt runway and seems suitable for something close to the area.
Going farther back the facilities we used at Zinder (1800m asphalt) are still available.
One facility I didn't find on the last search is Tessaoua Airport, a 1200m dirt airstrip between Zinder and Maradi.
https://dlca.logcluster.org/display/public/DLCA/2.2+Niger+Aviation

On the other side of the border, there's a lot more possibilities for the OpFor. Of course, there's a strong possibility that a facility could be built from scratch or from an existing road anywhere in the desert on the border. But in terms of pre-existing facilities:

Mission-Relevant:
We have Yobe International Airport at Damaturu. This is a cargo airport that's under construction irl but may have been rushed to completion in this timeline. It has a 4100m asphalt runway. Anything big could easily be launched from here.
Maiduguri International Airport has a 3000m asphalt runway.
Potiskum Airstrip is a 950m dirt runway airstrip on the highway west of Damaturu. Possibility it could have been upgraded.
Azare Airstrip is 2000m asphalt and a similar distance from the border as Damaturu and Potiskum.
Nguru Airstrip is southeast of Nguru and is a 710m dirt runway. It's closed and overgrown on google satellite imagery, but could easily have been cleared or even extended. It's basically right on the border.

One location that didn't come to my attention last mission but should be mentioned now is Umar Musa Yaradua Airport, in Katsina, which is right on the border next to Maradi and Zinder on the immediate flight path to Kano, and next door to an airforce base. Surprised the generals aren't garrisoning this area.
https://dlca.logcluster.org/display/public/DLCA/2.2+Nigeria+Aviation but note that I found this map to be fairly inaccurate. Nigeria has real airports so lovely airstrips don't show up on the more official surveys.

e:stealing the groundmaster seems a lot of trouble for something that could easily go wrong in multiple places. And it's so far away. Like, painfully far.

Mutiny!?! More like "reinterpreted orders"
We have a very strike-focused force ... and this mission is a defensive-counter air mission that will probably lead to a lot of missile-slinging. To make things worse, only have enough AMRAAMs for 1/2-1/3 of our Eagles. Going toe-to-toe with the Gripens probably won't end well for us.

So I propose we make this mission a strike mission. We execute a plan from the classic Hired Goons playbook: blow up their fighters on the ground.

Operation Best Defense

Phase 0: Gather Intel
Zebba infiltrates Nigerian territory and serarches for airbases in the Nguru-Geidem-Damaturu-Azare box. Given that this is a VERY large area (almost 2000 square kilometers), Zebba should priortize the northern part of the saerch area first. He can grease palms, stand on top of a mountain with some binocs, or whatever else Zebba does.
Base the three Patroller UAVs just north of Goudamaria. Use their ELINT and radar pods to look for possible airbase locations. The radar pod has a 370 km range, so they should be able to saerch the border without crossing itno Nigerian airspace.
If, and only if, we can locate enemy airbase(s) in the area do we move to Phase 0.5.

Phase 0.5: Pre-basing
Rapidly deploy the needed fuel, ordnance, spares, and ground support personnel to our forward bases.
-1st Fighter Squadron "Illegal Eagles" (F-15I) to Goure (If feasible. If not, base from Zinder)
-2nd Strike Squadron (less 2x aircraft) "Swing for the Fencers" (Su-24) to Zinder
-2x Su-24 to Diffa

Arm the aircraft
-Slammer Flight (4x F-15I with 4x AMRAAM and 4x Pythons)
-Shorty Flight (3x F-15I with 4x AMRAAM and 4x Pythons)
-Maverick (1x F-15I with 3x AMRAAM and 4x Pythons) ) *aircraft will only have 3 AMRAAMs due to ammo shortages
-Speedbump Flight (4?x F-15I with SDB and Python)
-Crater Flight (5x SU-24 with 2x KH-58 Kazoo)
-Pothole Flight (5x SU-24 with 2x KH-58 Kazoo)
-Dragon Jaw Flight (2?x Su-24 with 1500kg LGBs)
-Patroller 1-2 with radar pods
-Patroller 3 with ELINT pod

Phase 1: Setup
-Maverick will fly a racetrack 75km north of Goudamaria with Radar ON.
-Patrollers 1-2 will head to points east and west, respectively, of Zoumba and beginning using the radar pods to look for activity on the Nigerian side of the border. Do NOT cross into Nigerian airspace.
-Slammer and Shorty will take off and orbit at minimum altitude with Radar OFF
-Speedbump Flight will take off and orbit at minimum altitude with Radar OFF
-Crater and Pothole Flight will takeoff and transit to Goude at full military power and minimum altitude. Orbit at minimum altitude. Terrain following radar may be used for the transit, but otherwise Radar OFF.

Phase 2: Attack
-Slammer and Shorty Flight will climb to 25,000 feet at max speed (Full AB). Radars ON. Establish BARCAP patrol areas--Slammer to the west over Boune. Shorty to the southeast of Wodo. Engage any enemy aircaft sighted. When an aicraft is Winchester (no AMRAAMs remaining), have it fall back to orbit 75km north of Goudamaria--the aircraft is only cleared to return to combat if 1) all Gripens are out of action and 2) enemy Su-25 or Mi-24 are attacking ground forces. Fall back
-Speedbump Flight will climb to 20,000 feet at max speed (Full AB). Radars OFF. Drop SDB when in range. Prioritize enemy aircraft and runways. When an aircraft is Dakota (no A2G weapons remaining), have it fall back to orbit 75km north of Goudamaria--the aircraft is only cleared to return to combat if 1) all Gripens are out of action and 2) enemy Su-25 or Mi-24 are attacking ground forces.
-Crater and Pothole Flight will climb to 15,000 feet max speed (Full AB). Radars OFF. Fire Kazoos when in range. Prioritize enemy aircraft and runways. RTB when Dakota.

Phase 3: Cleanup
-Any remaining F-15s will orbit 75km north of Goudamaria. Radars ON. If any AMRAAMs remain, engage any Gripens that appear. If no AMRAAMs remain and Gripens appear, retreat out of range. If Gripens have been taken out of action, engage any remaining enemy aircraft with Pythons and guns.
-If, and only if, the Gripens are out of action, Dragon Jaw Flight takes off and attacks the bridge at 15,000 feet AGL.

Phase 4: RTB
-All remaining aircraft RTB.
