Most hairdressers aren't that big, as they only need a row of chairs to sit and wait, and how many chairs and mirrors on the opposite side.
They aren't designed for distancing mostly.

Also, hair itself is hard to keep track of, and it can have the virus itself.

I can't remember which organisation/company it was from but I got an email talking about the opportunities for new and inventive design and architecture solutions in the post Corona world.

In that spirit I would say hairdressers need to all refit to be like old banks where the customers and staff are separated by glass, then they could use those homer Simpson built in nuclear gloves to do the hair dressing. Also I guess all the banks should go back to how all the old banks were rather than trying to be Apple stores.

Conversely I've almost never seen a salon with all the chairs occupied at once, so distancing (albeit with reduced capacity) should be doable.

Hair's an interesting one, could it be solved with a Henry or similarly filtered vacuum cleaner and just leaving the clippings overnight before emptying it? Also maybe a physical barrier between chairs to stop hair blown from the dryer making it out?

for me anyway it's more being able to break out of established thought patterns for awhile - although I suppose those patterns are part of the 'self'. Also just experiencing things in a new, different way, with new, different ideas and sense impressions. A weed is a lot better for this than a booze, though.

Theres a lot of people who get their haircut weekly. Even I resorted to a Corona cut with hair clippers because i'd left it so long it was getting really unprofessional. It's one of those things that make people feel better about themselves so it will probably be fairly high up the list to re-open.

Takeaways and things of that sort too I would expect.

Also given the amount of cars I had overtake me on my bike ride today vs last week, the lockdown is ending of its own accord. I reckon we've got 2, at a push 3 weeks max before people just go out anyway.

This is one of those thing which highlights the massive gender divide in the workplace. Men in any job anywhere can very easily get a set of clippers and do a buzz cut, there are very very very few jobs where it’s acceptable for women to do the same. Women with long hair can go a while without a haircut but those of us with short hair get to week 8 and then BAM, looks like poo poo, and women can’t get away with that at work.

Nah, I think certain succession conversations were had during his hospital stay when he really could have died and once those conversations are had it's hard to put a stop to the whole thing. The situation is looking noticably bad to the sorts of people that the government cares about and the botched response will be hung on Johnsons head and he'll be couped, probably as soon as Brexit finally happens at the end of the year.

I think it's a lot less gendered in some places and a lot more in others.

Like obviously adult women having rights and not being considered mentally deficient infants* who need their husband's permission to set up a bank account is a good thing.

But kids' toys (and globes) are a lot more gendered now than I remember as a kid. Things like pink and blue kinder eggs, pink and blue happy meal toys, pink and blue legos, and you see that extending into kids' stories and even adult products like body wipes and gender reveal parties.

I used to read my uncle's "Boys Atlas of Science and Technology" (because no way would girls be interested in wheat harvests in the USSR or how we'll be able to telephone space soon) or similar from the 50s when I was young, as well as the much more gender neutral early 90s ones. Makes me wonder if the gender reveal crew will try bringing back boys' and girls' atlases.

*However I've read some worrying stuff about how a lot of the new 'personality disorders' are being used to bring back female hysteria rhetoric.

The mid to late 90s were very deliberately a backlash against political correctness of the late 80s and early 90s by the older gen X cohort tapping into 1970s nostalgia and hiding genuine misogyny and other forms of lovely behaviour under a convenient veil of irony. A lot of the lariest examples in the late 90a media are the exact same people who've retired to the country on lad mag money and push lovely transphobic poo poo as a misguided way to atone.

The current culture war bullshit is just a ripple of a ripple of that, riding the nostalgia cycle, with people who should know better harking back to the late 90s. The wheel turns forever, we just have to keep pushing forward to make sure we get more progress than we let fall away

I dunno, I think Lego's an outlier because it started out as a gender neutral thing, and when I was a kid they still had the plain MODEL 0130 SMALL HOUSE WITH GARAGE line, but they were already into the shooty space mans stuff and whatever else. It just caught up with everything else later

Gender reveal parties only really seem like a thing because people are more widely questioning gender and why it matters so much at all - I dunno how prevalent they were before, but I feel like that's more of a modern social media spectacle thing where the reveal is an event with impact. People definitely used to care about that, and you'd have announcement parties and gender themed baby showers and whatever, it just wasn't *huge pickup rolling pink coal arrives*

But yeah toys and stuff were always super gendered, maybe that's got worse in some ways (because marketing knows a good thing) but I think it's also got better, in terms of more questioning and more of a pushback, y'know? Maybe that's not leading to big changes on the shelves yet, but people are definitely trying to make different choices and resist these boxes instead of seeing it as normal. Change is a slow process but you can see it happening
