Natch, one day away from being ready to be blown up again.

I have to admit I am curious to see how your strategic layer stuff pans out. Not played WotC so don't know what a good/optimal play is but curious to see what I can learn from this playthrough. Whether through your pain or success. :D

Did you get a free Reaper there or is that just for the first faction you encounter? Also, what happens if the Chosen bar maxes out?

By investigating a faction's location at the resistance ring they automatically grant you a free unit from their faction. If one of them gets blown up or killed you can get one more by doing another mission at the resistance ring.

If a chosen bar maxes out they get a chance to shoot down the avenger with a gigantic fuckoff cannon and you get to send out 12 dudes to blow up a whole bunch of enemies, some alien vehicles, the giant gun and the chosen who shot you down... It's fun!

Knowing even less about XCOM2 than the previous game, what could (in hindsight obviously) have been done better with a sharpshooter here?
The penalty for close range shots with the sniper rifle drops off decently quickly. My play initially would have been to move the sniper up inside the train, behind the rest of the squad, and then posted them at the hard cover by the front train door. That sacrifices height advantage, but I know from hard experience that the top of the train means either no shot or no cover.

Honestly, the sight lines in the underground maps are wonky enough that there really isn't an optimal strategy for sniper play. Sometimes you can post them at a corner that lets them hold down a long tunnel, but that wasn't the case here unless you tucked the sniper on top of the VIP room and let them take potshots at whichever troopers end up in half cover. I might have brought another specialists or a rookie just so I had another magnetic rifle to take shots.

Sharpshooters are very feast or famine in this game. Sometimes you get a map where you can stick them on a hill and have them stand there clicking heads all mission long. Other times they're an empty spot on the team. They're aided enormously by having spotters, especially a ranger with Phantom, or a Reaper.

Now listen to me children and I'll tell you of the legend of the Ninja
It's counterintuitive, but in timed missions I tend to use sharpshooters as the point soldier before contact is made. (If a reaper isn't available.) The rationale is that when you make a blue scouting move with any unit, the followup is likely going to be a another reactionary move anyway. Either you see nothing, and push forward to a hard cover likely to be a good position, or you see or trigger something and fall back a bit into a good position. When the sharpshooter is doing the scouting, the fact that a blue move removes most of their combat effectiveness is minimized. The natural scouting moves tend to be good moves for finding a position for the sharpshooter as well.

I'm surprised you didn't go for that Resistance Order. This early in the game Double AP is godly, especially since it applies to the AP you gain from killing Chosen letting you get a pretty nutty amount of XCOM AP really fast.

I don't think we've ever seen you so panicked, it seemed like you were putting in actions without thinking, kind of flailing around a bit as things got worse and worse. That was rough. Tough mission. Yeah, you could've played better but you pointed out where you should have.

Legendary XCOM2 really isn't loving around. This mission being a prime example of the value of the alpha strike and deleting a pod, and of why the Assassin is the worst of the Chosen.

It is testing every ounce of my willpower not to get this game on PS4 and go ham. I have it on PC but my laptop gets hot. Scary hot. I got about this far into WOTC before deciding never to play it again until I upgrade. The Viper King appeared on my first supply raid, which was about my 3rd mission same as this campaign, so good times.

Must finish FFVIIR first. Then I can xcom.

Something is completely going over my head if it was referenced in the video or a comment. I assumed it was because considering the high probability of failure in the early game there might be multiple runs?

Ouch. Get 'em next mission!

I'm more worried about what this mission does to your strategic game. Thinning the roster like that greatly increases the chances of a wound/fatigue spiral, and robots are really expensive.

On a semi-related note, I almost always fight through the first haven assault, even if it means a soldier dying or getting kidnapped by the chosen. The reason: you get at least one Faceless corpse. You need one for the autopsy, and another from the second retaliation for the mimic beacon, which is key for Ironman runs.

It might be worth switching research to experimental weapons for the frost bomb, which has similar effects.

I consider the thing you get from faceless to be cheating and don’t use it.

It’s not cheating, mind you. But it trivializes any challenge the game had, and does so at a point where you haven’t earned it. Makes me not enjoy it.

As you might imagine, killing the chosen assassin gets you her gun and her hanzo steel. They’re really strong, but I feel like it’s earned because she’s incredibly challenging. Shooting some goo guys early on...less so.

Supplemental log 23-B

Normally I'd be watering my vegetation right about now. Laura, my love I miss you, would be busy tending the sheep. all would be well this fine Spring weather. At least that's what I thought would happen.
A critical connection error in one of the security bots early in the morning on March 16th 2035 made it send out a public signal looking for a network to hook up to. I only noticed it too late after it had been pinging a few hours because of a random diagnosis check. Analyzing the bot itself I saw no physical malfunction or damage so I started checking the OS. Digging myself in the code and diagnostics. I wanted to not let this kind of mishap happen again.

We are off the grid for almost 5 years now and I'd hate to see it all go to waste because of something small like this. Hopefully noone picked it up. The population here in Chile is sort of sparse, especially in this remote area.
At around 16:15 March 17th 2035 a perimeter alert went off. Seeing as I was already prepared and on edge because of the malfunction the day before I warned Laura and we both started checking the various cameras for intrusion or movement, hoping against all hope it would be a 'too large for its kind' animal that set it off and not Advent who finally found us. If they'd ever got their hands on her it would spell doom for everyone involved. I'd never live it through and would go down fighting.

I made a mental note of where we keep the pistols and was on my way to get them out of the safe but Laura called me back. She pointed towards Camera #34 and a small weight lifted off my shoulders. there were only 2 people onscreen and they had no Advent signatures on their uniform. Instead was a familiar looking symbol from the old days. I sort of recognized it but couldn't lay my finger on who or what they represented. It was a long time ago from before The Merge. Laura and I didn't know what their intentions were so we did not raise the security level too high but did put them on alert status.
Bot #30 and #28 made contact. Two soldiers named Deadford and Kaishai as they called themselves were sent here to investigate the previous sent signal. They received it on long range scanners and were curious since it had no known signature but was complex enough to warrant an investigation.

Apparantly they are part of a rebellion trying to put a stop to the Extra-terrestial presence on earth and had evidence Advent is planning something that would change the world for the worse. Even more than it is now. They were looking for people like them to help and support the cause. We talked for a few hours and they stayed for dinner. Laura made her favorite stew.
I wanted to volunteer for their cause. After talking it over we both decided it is for the best of everyone's interest and she would be safe enough here alone. Plus I could keep her updated on any possible Advent activity in the area Kaishai promised us.

April 4th 2035 we finally arrived on their Mothership as they called it. Have to be honest my first impression was that it was kind of a ramshackle of a ship and barely operational. But having met Miss Sheng in my first briefing I know the ship is in good hands. She is a mechanical genius and considering the fact the ship flies and works in the state it currently is in is a testament to that. We discussed what would be the best place for me to start and I suggested clearing out the rubble downstairs. that place is 100 accidents waiting to happen. However the Commander of this whole operation had a different plan and wanted me to fix up their second communications array responsible for ongoing contact with their allies seeing as how my whole private network back home was setup. It would help them maintain comms with troops on the ground doing covert actions and keep communications 'off radar'. Making it easier to manage rendezvous locations and keep status updates.

As I advised them that it would be 'easy albeit not up to standard protocols' for me to maintain and there was always a possibility for a leak down the pipeline, I was reminded that Commander's orders are final and not to be challenged. So I set myself up and have begun repairs and modifications where nessecary. I don't know much about the actual happenings and what goes on around here but so far apart from the state of the ship it is run tight and military. it gives hope and seeing everyone so coordinated and focused on the overall project is inspiring. The next time I see Deadford or Kaishai in the hallways I'll promise them a drink or two. I hope Laura stays safe and she's doing fine. If all goes well I can send her a message in about two days when we are in range.

I'd put them in the category of the Shadow Device except with a different failure mode as once it's blasted, it's over and now everyone's a target again. The HP it has should scale though rather than be a fixed number since it makes it more powerful in the early game and then decreases as enemy firepower goes up. And as they take up a slot, they still have to compete with other things like Grenades, Special Ammo, Medkits, and so on

It's a lot better since they nerfed the everloving gently caress out of them. They don't get cover and aliens have a 100% chance to hit them, so they'll burn through the 12 HP pretty quickly. Mimic beacons are basically your 'oh poo poo' button, one per mission

The issue with Alien Hunters is that the rulers are basically unmanageable without the overpowered weapons they give you, and those weapons *completely break the game* on any mission without a Ruler, the Frost Bomb being chief among them. It's like Stasis, except it's AoE, and you can shoot at frozen targets, and your grenadier can do it twice per mission. It works on Avatars, for god's sake.
