Iran is the obvious focus here but I find it interesting that Russiagate has also chipped away pretty heavily at anti-North Korean hype. The typical Dem presidential candidate can still be counted on to say something hawkish and stupid any time North Korea comes up but it's pretty clear at this point that North Korean's hype as a bogeyman is pretty well played out. They'd have to do something a lot more threatening than a weapons test to get anyone outside of the foreign policy blob to consider them a serious priority. Of course, as was the case with Solemaini, we could always just attack them and pretend like they were asking for it. Mind, such an action presupposes that the North Koreans don't retaliate- a gamble which probably isn't as safe as it was with Iran.

So the Corona virus has made it to South Korea and it's probably only a matter of time before it makes it to North Korea. When it does it's probably going to be really bad. NK probably doesn't have a great healthcare system and the government is even more paranoid and secretive than in China.

It's about time.
Isn't it more likely to make it across from China than South Korea?

The north doesn't come off to me as having the same inbuilt urban concentrations or high transportation connection elements necessary to help these diseases really break out and thrive as hard as they can in other places. If it does break out in a big way there, though, a genuinely much higher percentage of people will die than usual. Healthcare rationing is already pretty substantially steep between the relative haves & have nots, and large portions of the populace could have health hazards like "their system's already pretty weak on account of all the intestinal parasites" -- bad factors that go into comorbid territories.

I wonder what this graph-maker was thinking putting the bars in reverse-chronological order. I had to read this chart like 3 times to figure out what was happening. If it weren't for your post, I wouldn't have even noticed I was reading it backwards. And why is it a bar graph???

The thing this graph proves: Most people will always believe of whomever the media (the government, by extension) currently hype up as the current geopolitical enemy as the biggest threat to the US.

Could very well be NK again in a few years.

That's strange. Was it not one of the most senior North Korean officials to ever defect who said she was poisoned?

I remember the story being giving such weight due to his supposed seniority in the government.

Korean KFC fails for their lack of biscuits. At least down here in Gyeongsangnamdo.

This is a thing I didn't realize was important until I had KFC biscuits at the airport on a trip back to the US.

I'm pretty sure they have biscuits available. At least here in Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Did American KFCs have the pizza abomination?

I decided to stay a couple weeks here in Korea so I could catch the Jeju Fire Festival, but it's been cancelled. :(

And on top of that, my flight out of Korea has been pushed forward 3 days. Though I'm not sure what the 3 days will do to help for a flight 3 weeks from now.

Church battle!

Edit: went to KFC in Seoul and can confirm: biscuits.

"Hey this Coronavirus thing is a pretty big deal, you should let us into the country to help."

"That sounds cool. Are you going to get rid of the sanctions that make half the aid you could give us international crimes and let us screen you to make sure you're not spies?"

"No."

also here's a stupid take

Medical aid is exempted from sanctions.

In fact the UN has apparently given the WHO complete exemption from sanctions for the purposes of combating COVID-19

That's not true for sanctions the US imposes on the world, unless the government grants a special waiver.

Some Guy TT

International sanctions imposed on the regime to restrict goods from freely entering the country are another factor increasing North Korea’s vulnerability to the virus, Quintana said.

Sanctions that the U.N. Security Council imposed on North Korea since 2016 restrict and ban certain goods from entering and exiting the country to bar the country’s imports and exports from helping the regime’s nuclear weapons program.

Quintana said some humanitarian organizations that work in the country reported to him that they are facing difficulties bringing water filters and other hygienic items needed to prevent the virus contraction.

The U.N. human rights expert said it is important to “make a call to the sanctions committee of the Security Council to reassess the sanctions regimen to … make comprehensive assessment on how sanctions are impacting the daily life of these people.”

I'm starting to get really boxed in here. So many countries are closing their borders to flights from Korea. I just got a notice that my own flight has been blocked. This is certainly not fun. I wasn't really paying attention to previous pandemics, but this seems pretty unprecedented, right? All this because of that one cult.

I had to spend several hours in line for corona screening because I had to go to the hospital for something.
I went, they asked if I had been to Gyeongbuk, I said yes, and then they said I had to come back later in the afternoon.
So I came back, got inside, then got asked again, I said yes again, and was told to go to a screening location.
I waited for there in line for hours. But at the end, they just asked me if I had been to Gyeongbuk, which was the whole reason I was put in the line in the first place, then they immediately let me go.
Then I got back in and they tell me it's too late in the afternoon to get my exam. :bang:

It hits that fine line of being pretty easy to spread, hard to contain (contagious before you're showing symptoms), and also being comparatively deadly vs. common diseases with those traits.

Also add in less than ideal sanitary practices by different groups of people within the population and a stubbornness to not admit they have symptoms.
