Are the other prairie provinces this bad? What the gently caress is it about oil that turns people into raging chuds? I mean I know it's money in general but nothing seems to radicalize them nearly as quickly or go nearly as far.

Alberta elected an NDP government last time around (basically as left as it gets while still being a 'real' party) which shocked the hell out of me, but the NDP government did an amazing job laying all kinds of future groundwork and immediate action to diversify Alberta's economy (high tech, bio, renewables, etc) in addition to forward thinking stuff like the medical testing superlab. And they did this all WITHOUT straight up attacking the usual Alberta sacred cows of oil and gas. I was flabbergasted and honestly gained a new respect for that party and our former Premier.

Former because then a hugely skewed regional vote elected the UCP and Kenney, who instantly demolished every scrap of anything the NDP every did (the superlab was in the process of being built. Still early, but tore it up anyway paying huge cancel fees in the process. No other plans for the land or anything, just wanted it torn down) fired anyone who had been appointed, and in general ripped up anything that had even so much as been glanced at by the previous government, and doubled & tripled down on oil and gas.

It's been such a ridiculously, shamefully wasteful thing, and it's 2020 as hell.

I'm pretty disappointed. Why loving salons, of all things? The governor even made a statement about how people were making their own decision to take a risk going to these places - never mind the risk they're taking for their family and everyone else they'll interact with because they just couldn't go another loving day without a Brazilian blowout.

I'm pretty sure what's going to happen is that we're going to be back to "normal" by the end of May, and we'll all just have to accept millions of deaths as sacrifices to capitalism

Study of malaria drug on VA virus patients shows no benefit, more deaths

quote:

An anti-malaria drug repeatedly touted by President Donald Trump as a “game-changer” in the coronavirus pandemic didn’t work on patients recently treated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. There were more deaths among those patients who were given the drug, hydroxychloroquine, than patients who received standard care, researchers found.

Researchers analyzed the treatment of 368 male patients at VA hospitals nationwide who had died or been discharged as of April 11. About 28% of patients who received hydroxychloroquine died, compared with 11% of patients who received standard care. About 22% of patients died when they received hydroxychloroquine with azithromycin, which is used to treat bacterial infections.

Hydroxychloroquine had no effect on whether patients needed a ventilator, researchers found.

“In this study, we found no evidence that use of hydroxychloroquine, either with or without azithromycin, reduced the risk of mechanical ventilation in patients hospitalized with COVID-19,” the researchers wrote. “An association of increased overall mortality was identified in patients treated with hydroxychloroquine alone.”

Just gonna keep staying out of VA hospitals...

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-lt-gov-dan-patrick-reopening-economy-more-important-things-n1188911

quote:

Texas Lt. Gov Dan Patrick doubled down on the controversial comments he previously made regarding the coronavirus pandemic, telling Fox News on Monday that Americans had to “take some risks” in reopening the economy.

Patrick was heavily criticized last month after he suggested in an interview with Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that he and other senior citizens might be willing to die in order to save the U.S. economy. The Texas official stood by his statements in a new interview with Carlson on Monday night, saying that “we are crushing the economy.”

And what I said when I was with you that night, there are more important things than living. And that’s saving this country for my children, and my grandchildren and saving this country for all of us,” Patrick said Monday night.

He went on to say he didn’t want to die, but that “we got to take some risks and get back in the game, and get this country back up and running.”
