It just never stops being frustrating seeing the people who fought for global warming and college debt try to say that they want to provide a future for their children.

Of course, a couple years of slump isn't going to have much effect on the economy 20 years from now, and it's an entirely transparently meaningless bit of rhetoric, but still.

Incidentally, the anti-quarantine monsters have been trotting out the "my body my choice" line, by which they mean the choice of employers to force their income-unstable employees back into the danger zone or face being fired, as opposed to when they contract the disease and finally go to the emergency room after spreading it for two weeks and get fired for missing work while in a hospital bed.

But hey, maybe it'll momentarily boost stock prices before the disease spikes again and forces them back down again. It's entirely consistent with most companies making decisions that are terrible for the long term in the name of short term stock price gains, and I keep getting distracted from the sheer amorality of killing thousands by the fact that it won't even do what they want to happen. Ends v. Means is irrelevant when the ends can't be achieved by the means.

I work at one and the admins are admitting they're panicking, anticipating state budget cuts, oil revenue losses, and also afraid enrollment will decrease. Not sure why they're worried about the latter but that's what their emails say.

That's not even it though.

America is the #1 oil producing country on the planet. That's still below OPEC if you look at them as a single unit where they produce 44% of the world's oil, but it's still a lot. Saudi Arabia is #2, Russia is #3. That translates to American gas prices being pretty low relative to a lot of the rest of the world. It's easy to forget because we're often still riding the cultural memory of the OPEC embargo in the 70s.

But what it also means is that the US has a very large oil industry so that while we're not entirely a petrostate, there's a lot of (wealthy) Americans whose fortunes are tied to oil. I think there's something where a lot of crude oil produced by other countries still gets refined by US companies. So this isn't energy dependence on the rest of the world, this is economic dependence on oil remaining a valuable commodity.

I thought the whole thing was that SA and Russia were choking out US oil with this oversupply of cheap oil, since most of ours is shale that's harder to extract.

IT BURNS posted:

I got my appraisal today (higher than last year, of course) and the AD added an insert that basically just gave everyone a gigantic gently caress YOU, in red bolded font no less:

"This appraisal notice represents your property value as of January 1, 2020 per the property tax code. Any impact on values from the current health crisis will be reflected in the 2021 property valuations. There are currently no provisions in the tax code to allow for reduced values for 2020 based on an event such as the current health crisis."

In other words, we don't care that some of you lost your jobs and are homeschooling your kids. Fork it over, scumbags.

Contest it anyways. Regardless of COVID, you can still contest if the appraisal incorrectly appraised the market value and/or if the appraised value is unequal compared to other properties. My suggestion is to divide your appraised value by the number of square feet in your home to find the price per square foot. Next, look in your neighborhood for comparable homes (same number of bedrooms and baths) that sold around January 2019 and see what they sold for (Zillow is spotty but has this information). Divide the sale amount by the number of square feet that home has and see what the square foot price compares to your home's appraised value/square foot. Get a couple of properties, find the lowest square foot values, multiply that square foot value by the number of square feet in your home and argue that value should be the appropriate appraised value.

Many counties allow you to contest your appraisal online (your property tax paperwork should have a letter in it that talks about information regarding electronic protests). If your county doesn't offer electronic protests, mail your property owner's notice of protest (it should be in the paperwork they sent you) to your local tax assessor's office. MAKE SURE TO READ THE FORM CAREFULLY. If you don't check the right boxes (Incorrect appraised market value and Value is unequal compared to other properties are separate reasons) you can lose before you even start. You'll notice that there is a "temporary disaster damage exemption" box. Don't bother with that for now as Ken Paxton recently put out an AG opinion requiring physical damage for that to apply (so no economic loss due to COVID).

You can request a hearing in front of the Appraisal Review Board by person or by telephone and even request they send you a copy of the ARB hearing procedures ahead of time. If your appraised value is reasonable and you can back it up the tax assessor is likely offer to settle on an agreed value below the initial appraised value. If you like their number you can take it. Otherwise, you can take your chances in front of the ARB.

The economy isn't “off”. If you look at timelines, most restaurants, for example, saw a massive decrease in business before stay at home orders. People aren’t going to be packing into movie theaters or whatever. It isn't a choice between “economy or shutdown”, there would still be no economy.

Abbott has another press conference at 2 today, that's gonna be a big indicator of where we're headed in Texas. This oil poo poo has them on the ledge, they'd rather risk the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, at least, rather than risk having to raise taxes.

36.2% of the US is obese, so 48.3% of patients being obese is not surprising. I'm sure obesity, along with the other diseases listed, puts you at increased risk of COVID-19 putting you in the hospital. But also a lot of us are obese and/or have one of those diseases, so if he's trying to suggest most of us are fine...a ton of us have underlying health conditions we just ignore.

That being the case, Midlanders are circumspect about the ranking, at least according to a Reporter-Telegram online poll (left). 38.3 percent of respondents said the city “needs to diversify in preparation of a bust,” while 27% said the city’s wealth was a good thing for the community, but “only for some.”
January 2013.

Building more hotel rooms and restaurants and office buildings isn't the most useful kind of "diversification" in a resource-based nowheresville. Perhaps Midland should have looked to its big brother city down Southeast.
