On the negative side-effects of the cochlear implant, re the Discomfort mentioned, is that because over time since birth the brain learns to filter out irrelevant info so you aren't bombarded with pointless whitenoise but deaf people's brains were never exposed to it so don't know how to filter it?

A bit late to the probation party, but I've been making bad posts for 8 years now without any probes to my name. Also I have no idea how else I can find cat pictures on the internet.

I mean, I'm not torn up about it either way I just thought it was funny.

I also haven't really been caring about where it was but noticed it got really busy when it hit GBS and didn't think I'd posted there for a while before it happened. My maths and everything else skills are pretty weak so it is very plausible I'm wrong.

Syd Midnight posted:This applies to sign language as well. Since early childhood is the ideal time to learn multiple languages (for the above reasons), this is their chance to be really fluent in sign and spoken language. You can choose to get a cochlear implant as an adult, but you can't undo your childhood development. It would be nice if it was a simple issue, but it isn't. It's a huge loving can of worms. My (non deaf) ex's situation was pretty interesting in that his parents were both deaf and didn't really interact with the hearing community. As the oldest brother he grew up on sign language first and only really got exposed to spoken language frequently when he started going to day care. It's a similar situation to growing up with parents who don't speak the local language. He was very self conscious about his language skills because of that early experience of developmental delay combined with the pressure of having to help his parents out with for example official phone calls as a kid. His parents were pretty much monolingual speakers of sign language. They could read and write of course but his mom wrote basically in a text version of sign language, which ends up as just a string of concepts when you take away the grammar of body language ("good weather 🌞 🌞 bike university?"). Sometimes I couldn't make it out at all because it would only make sense if you mentally translated it to sign language. His dad had slightly better hearing and more spoken language skills from working in the hearing world... but he only deployed them for emergencies like dad jokes.

If you go to online Deaf forums, a lot of the older people type like that as well. Sort of like how a lot of boomers on social media have weird stream-of-conscious posts that don't really match the usual fluency that people growing up expressing themselves online have.

Dressing differently from how I think you should dress is a clear sign you are easily influenced by others. Also this popped up in the PYF comics thread and I just feel incredibly seen.

Possibly a troll because I don't use ResetEra and have no idea what it's like but if that's the case then the comments definitely count! https://twitter.com/ReeraTakes/status/1253411323049725952 Also, I just need to check in with people because maybe I'm just too full of hate, actually, and should chill out but I was shocked to hear anyone actually stunned that people were wishing the worst for Boris Johnson's health when he got Corona. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ih0JbSjpmBY&t=4952s Am I in the wrong there? I'm not even in or from the UK I kinda have a general 'gently caress em' attitude about say, Elon Musk doing a twitter tantrum about not getting a lollipop for his new reusable bottle top ideas or any politician actively making life worse for people via gun laws or etc.
