Regarding this: https://www.wcia.com/covid/two-in-illinois-call-poison-control-after-trump-covid-briefing/ quote:But Danny Chun with IPC says this isn’t exactly new. Calls to the hotline have increased 36-percent during the pandemic. So yeah, apparently this has been going on for a while if you believe that guy.

I took on a long distance hike for six months a few years ago. After the first month I got tired of my pump water filter getting clogged up every week or so and just started treating my drinking water with bleach. I had to buy a special bottle to carry it in because that poo poo doesn't like being contained. At one point it had leaked out of this travel shampoo thing I was using and burned a hole in my backpack. Anyway, I would just put 2 drops per gatorade bottle to kill off giardia or whatever supposedly would be in the creek water shake it up and drink it immediately. Didn't have to wait 30 minutes like you are supposed to with those iodine treatments. It was nice to be able to drink cold water right from the source. I read later I should have waited but I didn't get giardia or cow poo poo disease or anything. After five months of this I came out the other side ok. I did develop a kidney/bladder stone that was very uncomfortable when it finally passed in a Krystal bathroom near Chattanooga.

Bottled Iodine Crystals that backpackers use. Each cheap bottle can filter thousands of quarts. But it turns out you can make meth out of it so now you can't get it anywhere.

You can even treat drinking water with bleach. https://www.cdc.gov/healthywater/emergency/drinking/making-water-safe.html. I still advise that you shouldn't inject yourself or others with it but I promise to keep you all up to date if that changes.
