The last few days have been incredibly difficult for me because a bad video game story brought to life by overworked and exploited individuals was leaked, and it turns out it's a stupid misery and torture simulator that I desperately need to play during a global pandemic that is destroying millions of people's real lives.

This story is garbage, but it should be noted that Ellie and Dina don't actually die. I saw the scene myself, and Abby beats them both up, goes to slit Dina's throat (btw Ellie says "she's pregnant" and Abby goes "good" before that so that's nice) but is finally stopped by her companion, the Asian teen, calling out her name. She leaves the pair lying on the ground, hosed up, but apparently alive. According to some rumors/theories one of the scenes where Ellie and Dina argue as Ellie's about to set off somewhere is actually the epilogue, taking place months after Dina's given birth and that's the real meaning of the cycle of violence thing - Ellie's going after Abby and the third game will be played as Abby while Ellie is the villain hunting her down. I dunno if that last bit is accurate but it seems more fitting than Ellie just being unceremoniously killed, especially since Abby lets her go after she kills Joel earlier in the game.

One of the videos had a scene list which supports this. It also confirms that half the game is spent playing in Abby's perspective.

It's not just because it's low hanging fruit, but it's also because it should have been clear to everyone by now that vilification of groups based on the bad actors in that group is an awful thing. How many Muslims were vilified in social and media settings in the 90s with the rise of terror attacks, and then even more so after 9/11? Way too many. We pushed back. How many of the world's billion+ Muslims harbor terrorist views or membership in terror groups? A vast minority, and most of the terror victims are other Muslims. So when Muslims get vilified as terrorists (instead of the other way around) we rightfully push back. You get it, and it applies to multiple groups. If they want to depict a group who run around committing organized murder, go for the Fallout method and make them their own thing without parallels. Homicidal homo-odium is anathema to the actual doctrines and rules of Christianity so why wouldn't we push back when another group is now in the firing line?

I have no problem when characters get hurt or hosed up violently: The Sopranos, Deadwood, The Vengeance Trilogy- they all have parts that are gross and hard to watch, but they feel very deliberate and obviously serve a narrative purpose beyond just going “lol isn’t that gross.”

My problem with what we’ve heard and seen about TLOU2 is that it’s seems to be nasty just for the sake of it. It’s very funny to me that ND has been short stroking themselves for years over how mature and advanced their story telling is (remember when Druckman said they don’t use the word “fun” when designing games lol) and they ended basically just making an Eli Roth movie.

But we’ll see! Maybe the full game ends up earning all the scenes where people get liveleaked.

I want to believe that Ellie lives, but man oh man there are so many posts on twitter saying she and Dina both die. I really hope that's not the case. Joel dying is more than enough, what he did at the end of the first game has to be for something!

Although I really doubt that the fireflies would have cured poo poo with Ellie's sample. They are shown as incompetent throughout the entire game and then the first one you meet who's not Marlene is an rear end in a top hat looking for a reason to kill a guy who just went through hell for them.

I think making the bad guys homophobic Christians is lazy but I don’t think this logic tracks for me. Are we just never supposed to use anything with a basis in reality as an antagonist because dummies might extend their feelings toward the game to real life?

The Muslim comparison also doesn’t make sense to me because I guarantee that American mass market news is way more instrumental in building anti-Islamic sentiment than 24 or whatever.

I'm just tired of the belief that "not all games have to be fun" as a way to circumvent how droll and painful segments of TLOU were. That game was I guess an interesting experience but I'd never play it again because of how miserable it was and how generally boring the core stuff was, being either drawn out stealth fights or moving ladders/boxes around. Plenty of games like the MGS series occasionally throws a weird segment in to the mix for the experience but generally they were fun to play.

It's a campy YA survival plot that would work in a T rated game, being treated like loving Come and See. If the game was having 10% more fun it would work but it's gonna be a focus tested disaster.

I mean...this sounds tonally consistent with the first game if just a bit bleaker. What exactly makes it “a loving mess”? That they didn’t give everyone plot armor like it’s Uncharted?

Perhaps the part where midway through the game you're supposed to play as the character who brutally murders the previous game's protagonist and then somehow enjoy the second half, including the boss fight where you're asked to also kill the co-protagonist and her pregnant girlfriend. I'd say that's so edgy and dumb that it just falls apart. It's supposed to be poignant but instead just makes you hate the character you're playing as because it's not supported by the actual writing.

So I mean, what did people expect? Last of Us absolutely didn’t need a sequel to its story, but they went and did it anyway. That summary just now at least sounds borderline interesting. I’m not sure what people wanted out of this, Last of Us wasn’t really sunshine and daisies, and this seems as appropriate a continuation as any.

I’m not the biggest fan of the first game, so maybe I’m not getting the “this spits in fan’s faces” aspect of it. But I don’t think I’d be offended playing a game where the spoilered events unfold. I think people just want to hate this thing for existing in the first place, whether because of disagreeing with the crunch time or work environment, or just being offended that a sequel happened and it wasn’t what they had in their head as being an appropriate continuation.

Thats my two cents. That’s about as much effort as I’ve ever put into a post about the last of us.

Like yeah it’s funny it got leaked after being out on hold and then immediately had a release date slapped on it afterwards. Karmic retribution for the lovely crunch time perhaps. But I’d hope more people would at least get enjoyment out of the end product.

Honest to God I think Druckmann might've taken those jokes about Nathan Drake being a mass murderer a bit too seriously. Like, he just looked at one of the funny memes about ol' Nate the killer slaughtering guards and PMC goons with families and went ":thunk: hmm yup they've got a point there"

The sign had photos of the various dudes on them so you know what you were getting. All the photos basically looked like middle-aged dads in a department store photo booth, except for Neil Druckmann's, which was a moody black-and-white portrait of the type you'd usually see under the text "ABOUT THE AUTHOR". This told me all I really need to know about Druckmann, to be honest... I guess it's kind of interesting that my extremely shallow, mugshot-juxtaposition-based dismissal eventually justified itself.

Like Joel getting comeuppance for what he did is fine and all, the real stupidity of this game comes from the fact that they expect you to want to play as his killer and then go on to try and kill Ellie. There's no conceivable reason that a player would give a single gently caress about Abbie, or have any drive to want to kill Ellie. Like you have to have some motivation for playing as a protagonist and if you want someone to kill an old protagonist you need to make sure it's as drat airtight as can be. The Fireflies are loving morons who would've butchered Ellie for no gain so why would I care about being one of the daughters of that bunch of incompetent morons?
