If nothing else every single AAA studio needs union drives yesterday. How many stories have we heard about awful crunch practices from Naughty Dog, CDPR, Rockstar, etc.?

David being creepy and almost certainly a rapist? Cool, I want to get Ellie the gently caress away from this guy.

David dragging her around the room by her hair, slamming her into poo poo and wrenching her arm out of its socket while she's screaming and crying? No, Neil, the gently caress are you doing?

pretty much. the first game was certainly grim and bleak but it never felt exploitative or gross to me. it never seemed like the goal of the violence was shock or titillation. the David stuff comes the closest to hitting that cartoony grimdark meter but it was just restrained enough to me to work

this poo poo has looked like trash since that torture trailer reveal and it continues to do so

I feel sorta nonplussed by the leaks, seems better to wait until people actually play the whole thing and see what they think about it. All this stuff about how lovely the development was is much more offputting tbh.

TLOU's writing wasn't bulletproof, the worst decision being the collectable that indicated that the fireflies had failed to produce a cure before. It shifts focus from the morality of Joel's decision making to the internal mechanics of making a vaccine, when those details don't figure at all in Joel's decision; he would of short up that hospital to save Ellie even if they were guaranteed to end the apocalypse

Sure would be nice if people were more outraged by the company's abusive practices rather than the writing being bad.

Is there any path for the game industry to get out of this crunch hell they've created?

Wait for the AAA industry to collapse under its hubristic weight of constantly ballooning budgets being compressed into shorter and shorter dev cycles to try and fulfill increasingly unrealistic sales expectations.

Hasn't happened to the film industry yet, I doubt it's gonna happen to the games industry. Mass protesting by developers is the only way working conditions will improve imo. And boy, this seems like an ideal time to form such an organization of people!

I’m pretty sure if we ask those companies nicely they will come to realise the errors of their ways and adopt better practices.

Uncharted 4 is fantastic, by the way. It's real odd how everyone is so quick to dismiss the other stuff this dude worked on.

I'll say that TLOU was a good experience/story of a game but not one I'd really enjoy replaying again. I think just making a sequel to that ruins the weight of that game's ending and if the spoilers are correct, REALLY kind of mess up a lot of the resonance of the first game's events+overall story and sound messy. Maybe in context it makes more sense but from just the summary it sounds like a deliciously vile twist, and I will admit it's the kind of ballsy move I wouldn't expect other devs to follow through with.

Uncharted 4 was fun though I was kind of disappointed they went back to the well with both Uncharted/TLOU, kinda wanted something new but that's more my own taste. I still think Uncharted 2 is a straight banger and probably the best game they've made.

DURKMANN or whatever is a loving moron. You totally can pull the play as a new character in a established setting and be the bad guy all along. KOTOR did it and that game still is regarded as one of the finest moment in game storytelling but
A) You need a game to support the story
B) You need good storytelling and not just exposition and torture porn

Yeah I really don't think that Naughty Dog understands that they made the Fireflies both extremely incompetent and extremely unlikable.

They are hilariously incompetent in the first game. All they do is die. And when you show up, they seem like straight up villains. They were going to send Joel back out into the world without his loving backpack. That's essentially a death sentence. Some thanks, and so much for Marlene's payment.

Why can't you feel the loss of a woman who has already gotten her revenge but has to be stopped by another character from killing a pregnant woman like gently caress off . It's obvious that TLOU3 is just going to end w/ Ellie giving up on killing her or Ellie dying and going she's too far gone. Everything about Abby is unlikable the Fireflies were incompetent assholes why do I care

Yeah, a game where you start as Abby on the hunt for Joel ( but don't realize it at first, the game presents you as a new character in a new game ), and slowly but surely get to see a more personal side of her you can attach to. Maybe have her spend some time helping people out against the Seraphites. Followed by seeing more and more issues with what Joel has been up to since you last saw him.

Maybe find a village of Fireflies that probably wasn't doing anything bad, with a few people genuinely trying to live their lives and move on and Joel and Co slaughtered them to protect himself/Ellie.

Have a segment where she travels with Ellie for awhile without realizing who Ellie is, and they become decent enough friends. Mix Abby and Ellie segments so you play both.

Get to the endgame and prepare to kill Joel. Ellie tries to stop it. If you kill Joel she lives but hates you and vows to come after you. If you step down Joel shoots at you and kills Ellie in the crossfire. Like not a good ending by any means, but gently caress I whipped this whole thing up on the pot and it's 20 times better then the drivel they put together.

Congratulations. Abby is a bad person who hosed it all up, and all you've done is make things worse/make more enemies. You get your revenge just leads to more revenge story plot. And it's not utterly tonedeaf like this

Like holy loving poo poo, Abby has to be talked down from murdering a pregnant woman who did nothing to her and just happened to be in the wrong place. She's awful.

Yeah I am not ready to jump whole hog into literary critique of the details without the whole picture of the story beyond broad outlines, there has been some confirmation of odious thematic elements but those were obvious from the first reveal trailer.

I am totally here for the corporate drama and hope we learn more about what mismanagement went on, if this was at its core a worker retaliation incident like the rumors are saying

I'm guessing those plans for a TLOU movie never panned out because I'm now seeing that HBO bought the TV rights a little while back. Sony still has big plans to turn this into a media franchise (though they also tried that with an Uncharted movie and that's been sitting in limbo for ages with a revolving door of actors and directors).

Oh, and Druckmann is attached as a writer, as is the one for Chernobyl.

Here's one.

GamesIndustry.biz posted:

When Soren Johnson, the designer of Offworld Trading Company and the host of the podcast, asked Hennig how difficult AAA development was on a personal level, Hennig replied, "Really hard. The whole time I was at Naughty Dog - ten-and-a-half years - I probably, on average, I don't know if I ever worked less than 80 hours a week. There were exceptions where it was like, 'Okay, let's take a couple of days off,' but I pretty much worked seven days a week, at least 12 hours a day."

[...]

"There's people who never go home and see their families. They have children who are growing up without seeing them," she said. "I didn't have my own kids. I chose my career in lots of ways, and I could be single-minded like that. When I was making sacrifices, did it affect my family? Yes, but it was primarily affecting me and I could make that choice. But when I look at other people... I mean, my health really declined, and I had to take care of myself, because it was, like, bad. And there were people who, y'know, collapsed, or had to go and check themselves in somewhere when one of these games were done. Or they got divorced. That's not okay, any of that. None of this is worth that.

it’s not even remotely feasible for her to have that physique in an apocalypse scenario. you don’t get that physique without a carefully regulated diet and full time weight training routine with gear usage on top of it.

her being a lebron James-esque genetic freak trans woman is actually kind of the only explanation that makes any kind of sense
