Meat isn't critical. If anything, shutting down meat processing means more grain is available so those operations can be scaled back as well.

even if you were right to make that decision for everyone else, what would you do with the current cattle stock? pile them up and torch the warehouse, or just let them starve where they stand and rot where they lie?

Lol no. If we shut down meat processing everyone's daily calorie and protein needs wouldn't be instantly met with silage. It's taking weeks to months to shift toilet paper and flour production just from commercial to consumer use.

USDA can't even suss out getting vegetables to food banks in time to prevent farmers from plowing their crops under. I don't expect them to be able to work out a grain swap for meat.

I think a lot of that grain wouldn't be suitable for human consumption, so I suspect that killing the meat industry would just result in more expensive food and more starving people in the short term.

So I did some math. If we decide starting WW2 was the previous greatest mistake, slowing the economy is worse than killing approximately 234,000,000 inflation adjusted people. Or with absolute numbers worse than killing 70-85 million.

It's not just an easy product swap either. There's supply, transportation, processing, packaging, distribution, etc. poo poo, the diary industry has had a hard time responding to market demands, and that's when it's nearly the same product. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2020/04/10/fact-check-coronavirus-farmers-dump-milk-demand-shift-bottling-limits/5128191002/
