The only Republican in the House who called for Trump's impeachment, and then split from the Republican party/was disinvited from CPAC. Romney's a Senator, and didn't get kicked out of the Republican party because the GOP is afraid of losing votes in Utah or something?

No actual idea who he is, other than someone who will gently caress up the election for a Democratic candidate because he's unlikely to peel off votes from the GOP.

quote:

After years of persecuting Afghanistan’s religious and ethnic minorities, the Taliban are now trying to win over and recruit from the Shiite Hazara community ahead of intra-Afghan peace talks.

The predominantly Sunni insurgents posted a video on their website last week to introduce their first local leader from the Hazara community. Mawlawi Mahdi, a Shiite cleric militia leader, was named the Taliban’s governor for Balkhab district in Sar-e-Pul province in northern Afghanistan.

In the video posted on April 22, Mahdi urges Hazaras, who have faced repeated attacks from the Taliban over the past two decades, to join the group in fighting against “Jewish and Christian invaders”, referring to the United States.

“Weren’t you in the frontline fighting the Soviet Union alongside your Sunni brothers?” he says. “Why aren't you joining your Taliban brothers in fighting this invasion?”

The Taliban are “inclusive of all people without any racism” and Shiites are very much a part of their “divine strategy”, Mahdi says in another section of the roughly edited video, in which some of his statements are cut off in mid-sentence.

Ehhh, I think he's as likely to gently caress things up for the dems as Gary Johnson or Evan McMullin did for Clinton they didn't really, Jill Stein gets that honor.

Keep in mind, third parties run candidates in just about every presidential election. It's just more often than not, no one pays any attention to them. Jill Stein and Ralph Nader get a lot of attention because you could logically make the connection that Dem leaning independents would break for them (and did in states that were very close)...Libertarian/Freedom party candidates, not so much. Special mention to Ross Perot as well.

Lol no. If we shut down meat processing everyone's daily calorie and protein needs wouldn't be instantly met with silage. It's taking weeks to months to shift toilet paper and flour production just from commercial to consumer use.

No one in the US is going to go hungry even in the imaginary worst case scenario of all meat production shutting down overnight. There's more than enough excess capacity of calories without any changes, and in the long run there's a huge amount of US farmland dedicated just to feeding animals that can be repurposed.

Declaring meat processing plants critical even as everyone inside is getting sick is being done because the meat processing industry asked for it.

People go hungry right now in the US, many of them children. Don't make sweeping generalizations.

In 2019, most families living in poverty earn less than $25,750 per year. More than 37 million people struggle with hunger in the United States, including more than 11 million children. A household that is food insecure has limited or uncertain access to enough food to support a healthy life.

Deleting meat from the food supply would make that number go up in the short and medium term significantly.

I'm not really up for re-litigating 2016 for the umpteenth time but Clinton lost for a variety of reasons and not any one reason in particular.

It's fair to say she lost both due to reasons well beyond her control as well as her own campaigns failures. Had her campaign not made some missteps it's quite possible she'd be in the White House right now and Trump would have hosed off back to NYC, buttery emails and Comey be damned.

Almost universally because their families can't afford the food, not because there aren't enough calories being produced by US agriculture and food processing.

It is though. "People will go hungry" is not a good reason to force meatpacking workers to risk what is, by all accounts, a wildy increased risk of coronavirus infction. People are going hungry in the US due to a lack of money, not because the food isn't there to buy. Industry has the capacity to provide the calories required with or without meat if the government is willing to make people not going hungry a priority. The only reason the administration is declaring meat processing facilities essential is because their owners make political contributions and don't want to lose money by shutting down production just because their labor force is dropping like flies.

Most prisons are at the top of their respective states' outbreak locations. There's a lot of good work going in the legal philanthropy sector with getting people the gently caress out and sent home on house arrest, but again, it's another department where we're about two months behind where we need to be. Jails/prisons are indoors, tightly-packed, with already-poo poo healthcare, so it was basically a matter of time before each of them got seeded by a guard, a visitor, or a lawyer carrying COVID.

Big events like these expose your society's preexisting conditions - skyrocketing prison populations and excessively vertically integrated / monopolistic food producers come to mind!

Well then, in that case there's no alternative to forcing people to die in meat processing plants for minimum wage. Even as someone who eats meat, it's amazing the extent that people would prefer that (other, poorer) people die for their dietary preferences instead of eating some lentils.

Just my experience with Federal sentencing guidelines. 24 months means she's in zone 4, the heavy hitter group of at least 8 points.

Again, not saying she deserves death at all. But 2+ years Federally means there's a bit more going on.
