All charges were later dropped after the Director of Public Prosecutions found there was not enough evidence to support them. Rod McCracken was subsequently fined $15,000 for an offence under the ACT OH&S Act.

The error that Ford made in this case -- receiving a radio call but mentally expecting a different one, and having your brain just hear what you want to hear -- is common enough in aviation that there are discussions of it in the FAA's flying handbooks. The radio calls are highly standardized, and so if you're flying the pattern on a sleepy day and every time so far you've called "89HU holding short at H" they've immediately respond "89HU cleared to cross runway 25", maybe you get zoned out and the next time they respond with "continue holding short" your brain just blanks it out and continues with what it was expecting to do. Also being 77 and allegedly a huge stoner probably doesn't help with brain farts.
