Randarkman posted:We don't often like to talk about it, but there's just a whole bunch of stuff pointing to substantial occurences of corruption and grift in public procurement and construction projects in Norway. I'm fairly certain you have a bunch of politicians with essentially compromised interests and stakes in companies that are awarded public contracts and/or they give insider information on this to people who they know who do. Consequence of all of it being a pretty small circle all things considered. Hi I work (among other things) in public procurement and administration of and around construction projects. It's a heady mix of incompetence, ignorance of the consequences and huge businesses having shady backroom dealings with elected officials with compromised neutrality. Hth. The reason is we're a small nation with powerful local syndicates and professional local politicians. It was always as thus and as thus shall always be. E: vote Rødt.

the case of school capacity in Bergen in particular is incredibly egregious, and combined with karakterbasert opptak it leads to working-class kids in the city proper also getting absurd commutes. laksevåg has been shat on for decades, unfortunately also lol schjelderup went straight from politics to a cushy job at a major developer, loving gangster business

fwiw i've actually gotten a bit of respect for the guy heading bergen labour now, roger valhammer. he seems, idk, basically serious about running the city in a reasonable way, by which i mean that he hasn't seriously pissed me off in how he's handled any particular situation this far in his tenure

Honestly I don't get why people congratulate each other on May day. Have people always done this or is it a recent thing? Seems like a weird thing to do, congratulations for what, being on the left? Because the 8 hour day was won 100 years ago? I really don't understand.

I just think it's feels weirdly individualistic and identitarian to use the same phrase as people use on each other's birthdays on May 1st. Yeah, it's just awkward, nothing special really. Congratulations are for birthdays and weddings and such, not Constiution Day or May 1st, we also don't do it for Christmas which also would seem awkward. Anyway, it's recent thing isn't it? Feels like it for both 17th and 1st May that it's kind of taken off in the last 10 years or so that people congratulate each other on that. I can't really remember it always being a thing. Could be the follies of time, but it really does feel like a recent phenomenon that has taken off because of use on social media. Katt posted:8 hour day? 1st of May is a mockery of what it celebrates - a mix of the drunken revelry that distracted workers from their plight in ages past and increasingly just a day off for the middle class - perhaps enjoying some nice take-away delivered by the actual proletariate. It's contemptible how most labor unions (with a few exceptions) complete ignore the gig economy and how it relies on a new underpaid proletariate denied even the most basic of labor protection through pro forma "business-to-business" contracts. Until they start doing something about the gig economy, the speeches on the 1st of May are nothing but hypocrisy and make-believe.

SplitSoul posted:R0 in Denmark has jumped from 0.6 to 0.9 since the re-opening started. Also infection rates among 13-19 year olds have doubled. SSI has a hypothesis that is due to teens lacking proper impulse control and having changed their behaviour recently. It's funny they don't even consider it might be linked to high schools being reopened for a good third of the students? Or no, it's not funny. This re-opening is so poorly executed and monitored it approaches criminal levels of incompetence.

norwegian LO has the gig economy as its biggest target and constantly rants about it, the big unions are not idiots class war doesn't have to be all bleak all the time, may day is an excellent carneval of politics and the singing and euphoria are necessary and good for the health and coherence of the movement
