I just cracked out the GOTY edition from GOG and forced the unfiltered textures in the d3d10 renderer. It's not bad in 4k.

That said, the first level is weirdly hard to get into again. Something about large open spaces and the weirdly opaque stealth mechanism, I haven't got the feel for it yet.

The first level of the game is the best level but it’s in the worst spot. You have so many options but haven’t really been able to get familiar with them yet. I have a hard time with it when I’m picking the game up for the first time in a while too.

All stealth games need an MGS style soliton radar or the visibility indicator for my money. I prefer to know if I can be seen or not.

Would a biomod for a radar have been a good idea? If you got it too late in the game it'd probably be too late as you'd be a murdergod by then anyway.

How do you pull this off? I tried googling and poking around in the .ini files, but didn't find a switch that would do what I want. I'm on the Steam GOTY version, that seems to have different internals than the GOG one, though.

edit: Figured it out! After installing Kentie's D3D 10 renderer (http://kentie.net/article/d3d10drv/), go to Deus Ex/System/d3d10drv and open up unrealpool.fxh in editor of your choice. Comment out the last if statement so it looks like this

code:

Yea the first level of the game is a great stand-alone demo, where every mechanic is at play in a self-contained world (think Fallout's Scrapheap demo). As a first level of a video game, however, it has pretty serious flaws.

It has that rogue like “first level is the hardest” quality, despite not being a rogue like. Liberty Island is one of, if not the best levels in all of gaming history, but maybe it should have happened after the first trip to NYC proper?

Sorry, just saw your post. Yeah, that's what I'm using, the d3d10 renderer and the modified shader file. Works a treat.

Any kind of "in cover" indicator would have been good. Hell, a Thief style light gem probably would have been fine. As it is, you're not visible in shadow, unless you are, you're also not visible in broad daylight outside of a certain range, line of sight or no, until you do something that gets their attention. You can basically run up to them full speed and they won't hear you until you're maybe six feet away. It's weird to get used to.

It just dumps you into the game with a whole lot of options, and space, and you get to figure out what to do with it. In theory I like it, but it's definitely overwhelming the first time through.

I misread Steam as “switch” because that word was right above it in the mobile app. If DX was on the Switch I’d probably keep mine instead of selling it, that game would rule on a portable.

Did they fix the thing where the DLC items could only be applied to one save with the DRM change? That was so stupid.

Pretty great game though, cant wait for Square Enix to dust the franchise off again.

"Aug Lives Matter" only ever existed as a single sign in a single piece of concept art. The people who laughed at chuds getting mad that a single piece of Human Revolution concept art had George W Bush on a wanted poster turned around and the totally outdid them.

I meant in the sense of a game that just takes every conspiracy theory it can get its hands on and jams them together, possibly while listening to Art Bell. 90’s and 2000 conspiracy theories were kind of fun. Now the best one we have is what, they’re making the frogs gay? It’s all false flag poo poo about very real dead kids and insane QAnon stuff now.

This is probably just the result of me knowing too much about gross antisemitic poo poo but like, they specifically mention the Rothschilds as part of the Illuminati conspiracy poo poo in Deus Ex and that's like, one of the older "wealthy jews control the world" conspiracies which is pretty uncomfortable now that antisemites are a lot more public these days.

There's literally one line when one of the old illuminati guys (Everett?) says over your comlink that he was once kneeling at the altar of the ancient church you're going through next to a Rothschild. It stays far away from anything even adjacent to antisemitism
