BigFactory posted:It sounded like another one of those bad self parodies for the first few verses but it sucked me in halfway and I found it very emotional by the end. Not an all time classic but it’s got something special going on. His piano playing is great too, and I love hearing tony use a bow. The lyrics are one thing, but the musicianship on these two new tracks is pretty interesting. its like if Godspeed You Black Emperor played a standard I-IV-V kinda progression - its drawn out and ambient to back Dylan's near-spoken word delivery, and so the way those old familiar chords resolve has a new feel to it. the lyrical content of these new tracks reminds me of somebody Dylan is a big fan of - John Trudell. He has a song called "Baby Boom Che" that I think serves as a nice companion to the train of thought Dylan is on with "Murder Most Foul." I come with a question, I have some country albums that are heavy in my rotation. I am wondering if anyone can give any suggestions based on these: Waylon Jennings - Honky Tonk Heroes Jerry Jeff Walker - Viva Terlingua Billy Joe Shaver - I'm Just and Old Chunk of Coal Townes Van Zandt - any of his albums

I often hear big Townes Van Zandt fans talk about Hayes Carll. I haven't gotten around to listening to much besides Grateful For Christmas, but it was solid.

The Skeeters are pretty good and very Waylon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDxv-GeJsNM Steve Earle is good too. 'The Mountain' is a fantastic album- a little bluegrassy. 'Copperhead Road' and 'Guitar Town' are both still great albums 25 years later.

Picked up a copy of Jason Isbell's new record and its another home run for him. Amanda's fiddle isn't featured much but Jimbo Hart is definitely the most under rated bass player of our time.

Were the prison concerts just some Johnny Cash liked to do or did other country artists do them as well? Also, I've always greatly preferred live albums to studio when it comes to country and folk music and I was wondering if there were any good ones you could recommend if I like the usual suspects (Cash, Willie, Waylon) and some of the newer boys (Colter Wall, Isbell, Hayes Carll and Sturgil) and I guess throw in Steve Earle. Just artist in that general sound, playing live and interacting with the crowd.

Sugarfoot are a Norwegian sort-of supergroup, in the sense that most people won't have heard of the members before, but they are in other bands (Deleted Waveform Gatherings, Motorpsycho, among others). They make primarily country-rock, with some diversions around the edges. I only own the first 3 albums, but I'm working my way through and word from fans is that they keep improving. Their first album - This Love That We Outwore - is very solid, but start with Big Sky Country, which is just better in every way. Album 3 - Different Stars - was recorded at Joshua Tree and steps the tempo down, but is still very good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktg1upPvnLE - 'Back At Your Door' - from This Love That We Outwore https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rzHyHVQJ5A - 'Monday (I'll Stay Sober)' - from Big Sky Country https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfYcnYjwCH4 - 'So Dark The Night' - from Different Stars

And then at the last minute, he pulled a Ryan Adams and backed out, probably because he heard the songs and was threatened by honesty. https://uproxx.com/indie/jason-isbell-interview-reunions-reviews-every-album/

I hope this isn't too obscure, but I wanted to share a local artist I've seen perform a few times around town, Tessa Paige. I just found out she recorded an album late last year and I think she has a really pretty sound!

jason isbell is one of the most quotable people on the planet, and that article is no exception. i could quote something from every one of the "reviews" but i'll just stick with this one that made me laugh out loudquote:I think one problem that I had in those days was the idea of, if I’m making a record, then I need to do something that warrants being called a producer. If something was done, then I would go back and say, “I don’t feel like this is the work of a producer yet, so I need to produce this some more.” That wound up, in a lot of ways, causing some trouble, because I couldn’t just let something be at that point in my life. And that carried on for the next couple albums. When we went back to do remixes of the self-titled album, Dave Cobb said, “Why are there 15 guitars in this track?” And I was like, “Man, that’s because I was producing, Dave. I was producing.”

Bonzo posted:So it seems that Ryan Adams was going to produce Southeastern Great read. You know I started listening to isbell after reading this thread. Around 2017 so really recently. I would throw a song from him on some driving mix or some background music. Mixed with a bunch of other stuff. Then I'd find myself humming a few bars or looking up some lyrics and adding more of his songs to the playlist. Spotify's end of year listening insights report was like "this guy is one of your top 3 listens" and I had no idea I listened to him -that- much. I don't think I've ever had a favorite artist "sneak up" on me like that.

great live album I just discovered is John Prine's September 78 if you like John Prine, and you like the raw energy of electric Bob Dylan circa 1966, this album kills even if the lyrics of John Prine weren't there its just a great sounding live album instrumentally 20 Blunts fucked around with this message at 02:45 on Jun 12, 2020 |

Good resources on learning how to play Canadian, Irish, Scottish or Scandinavian folk music? Not looking for something specific necessarily to one instrument but mostly on structure, harmony, etc to get a good idea of how to go further with the small tunes you can find everywhere. Thanks!
