The McElroys were the first podcast I started listening to regularly and they got me through a painfully boring data entry and shipping job for a few years, but I've fallen off them for a while now because they leaned so much into the expectations of the tumblr anxiety baby fanbase. I still love Monster Factory, and I'm sure Travis is a perfectly decent man, husband, and father, but he is cringe theater kid incarnate and always has a whiff of positivity grift about him. Someone once said he seems like he's somehow doing queer stolen valor. Edit: I'm only minimally aware of Warhammer 40k, but it always looked to me like the super marine guys were how America sees its glorious fascist empire, but the orcs are how we actually are. The main thing worth knowing about 40k is that it started like a Judge Dredd-esque pastiche where the space marines were portrayed as ridiculous authoritarian caricatures that were as likely to kill your heroes as be helpful. The people who created that version of the company were gradually replaced by people who thought power armor was cool.

Tumblr anxiety babies are the widdle smol bean uwu sincerity poisoned wokescolds whose moral north star is nothing more or less than "I don't want anyone to be mad at me for anything ever" and thus aggressively police the world on behalf of the theoretical feelings that they themselves (white shut ins, mostly) have ascribed to an ambient and abstracted ur-minority. They have the critical analysis capacity of a tiny nervous dog. The McElroys hired an artist to draw a comic based on their D&D game and the artist drew the elf character as sort if sea foam green and the fanbase exploded into a weeks long meltdown about how this could be perceived as anti-semitic T R O P E S and it necessitated prolonged apologies and gentle cooing by the hosts in order to defuse. This is the same group of white shut ins who also want these able bodied CHWM podcast hosts to play trans queer disabled people of color for all their characters in their RPG podcast and see nothing weird about that at all. Tl:dr; the McElroys put all their eggs into the basket of pleasing brain damaged freaks whose only hobby is finding ways to not be pleased with things and it has coated their content in a gummy, saccharine, pre-apologizing glaze that is increasingly hard to ignore. Edit: they're childhood friends with Lin Manuel Miranda and their content has had to drift toward the style you see in those enervating LMM Twitter posts like "hey, wipe the schmutz off your face, friend.
