if you we agreed would it change anything about the international dynamics of the USA being a self interested AND self destructive empire while at least the chinese seem significantly less hellbent on wiping out humanity?

Perhaps it has less to do with the great man narrative of strong leader vs weak leader and more to do with the fact that the Russian empire was several magnitudes larger than half of chiapas

The "leader" thing was a metaphor to illustrate what I meant by "strength" and "weakness", not a reference to any actual leaders. I agree with you with the reservation that this strength/weakness IMO isn't about the size of a controlled area so much as social cohesion and trust among the people living there. AFAIK the Zapatista base is mainly Indigenous peasantry with a long history of mutual aid and struggle, not just anyone could have done the same even within a much smaller area and population. Whereas Russia was a prison house of nations with little to do with one another except having been bound into the same empire, and so on. A movement has to make the best of what history hands to it, the point was just about seeing the results of that as products of limitations rather than something inherently desirable simply because it worked.

from the perspective of a country like the philippines the question isn't 'is china imperialist' because uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

the real question is 'is china's imperialism better on the margin for you that the u.s's imperialism and the answer is 'probably yes.'

yeah i have no clue how anyone could honestly look at chinas relationship to countries like cambodia and not conclude it is imperialistic. i do not think chinese imperialism is as bad as american or western imperialism but its still not a good thing.

Me, for one. China is a country that aspires to become imperialist, but actual numbers show it to still be in the ranks of exploited nations. The Chinese state's main imperialism-related crime by far is against the Chinese people as a mediator of western imperialism in the country.

Imperialism is just social relations in the end though. While western countries accusing China of imperialism are just crying crocodile tears, it's possible for China to engage in imperialist relations with other nations. After all, incrementally building up imperialist relations is the only way for anyone to become imperialist on the whole.

Impermanent posted:

You don't need to answer whether China is imperialist to be able to speak of Chinese imperialism in the Philippines. After all, a country like the Philippines isn't interested in China's overall relation to imperialism, only its own relation to it. Whatever China itself is, it's the imperialist sector of the Chinese system that engages with the Philippines: the relation of China to the Philippines is principally imperialist even if the relation of China to the world is principally being exploited by imperialism.

It's a fool's errand to search for lesser evils among imperialisms, the only way one imperialism can be "better" is by being weaker. China is only good insofar as it weakens U.S. hegemony, up until it overtakes it. Which probably isn't too far away, given that we're talking about its close neighbors. The only way out for the Philippines is to become too tough to engage in imperialist relations with, either by it becoming more self-reliant and powerful or by imperialisms in the area weakening.

its actually not. because sometimes you have to make deals with one to handle another. it's called "actually having power and doing something with it instead of relating to the world through a series of abstractions"

I don't mean you can't deal with an evil, but like you imply, then you'd be dealing with both evils on a case-by-case basis rather than giving one a preferred status based on that it's a lesser one. Partnering with one for defense from another produces a spiral of dependency, and dependency is how they pull you past the point of no return. The talk of lesser evils sounded to me like "Which one would be least worst to be dependent of?"
