Growing up, I guess TBS had a contract for unlimited broadcast rights to all of the Roger Moore bond movies, and boy did they use it. I must’ve seen The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, Man With the Golden Gun, A View to a Kill, and Moonraker about two dozen times each. It felt sometimes like you’d turn the TV on and it was either Bond or Smokey and the Bandit. Not a lot in between.

Watching a Moore Bond movie now is almost painful.

Dalton lost most Bond movie deals hands down to everyone.

At least 2 to "looking too young", 1 to "Moore used the return clause", 1 to "company had legal problems with the script" and the last one to "looking too old and Brosnan was available".

Dalton was in serious talks, or was originally going to, lead the same amount of Bond movies as Moore. What he finally got was two movies, one which was OK and one which was low-budget carry-over, something that Moore made as a hobby.

I'm an old so Moore's were the Bonds coming out when I was a kid. Much like some (British) people talk about the lead actor in Doctor Who when they were growing up being "MY Doctor", he was MY Bond by default. Loved the crazy gadgets and child me took them to be super-serious spy thrillers, not really noticing the camp and his ludicrous age by the end.

Then I grow up and look at Connery's more serious take and feel a bit silly. I still like Moore, mind.

I suppose it's a bit like if we played Star Wars in the yard in primary school, everyone wanted to be Luke. Then you grow up and it's "gently caress that whiny child, Han's the cool one" ;)

I'll die on the hill that Lazenby's is the best classic Bond movie though, even if he's not the best Bond actor.

e: I used to love the '60s Batman reruns on TV. My 8-year-older brother tried to tell me that it was meant to be campy and tongue-in-cheek but I was having none of it. This was SERIOUS BUSINESS. Either children are weird or I was a particularly stupid child (possible).

I've got a pocket full of cheese🧀, and a garden full of trees🌴.

The Living Daylights is my favourite Bond film.

I know I am in the minority, but I think it is a gem. All of the baddies are top notch, (the buffoonish russian, the blonde assassin, and the American General), the opening in Gibraltar is phenomenal, and Dalton is a good to very good James Bond.

I mean it doesn't have Grace Kelly loving Roger Moore whilst Christopher Walken chews scenery, but you can't have everything.

I don't think Grace Kelly was loving anyone by the time that movie came out.

Exploration is ill-advised.
I remember watching, I think, For Your Eyes Only, which is apparently considered the one good Dalton movie? The one where the ending has the macguffin get blown up and everyone goes home.

I've heard it said that Pierce Brosnan got better at playing Bond while the movies got worse.

For your eyes only is Moore and it is also great. The Greek guy who is just chomping down on pistachios the whole movie is great character development

None of the post-Moonraker Moore films are all that great or memorable, but of those, I think For Your Eyes Only is the best.

I don't have a problem with Moore as Bond, but I prefer Dalton or Brosnan. I like both of Dalton's films and wish we had gotten more of him.

Not arguing with you specifically, but I don't think the view of Connery as serious ever held up. From Russia With Love gets cited as the serious spy movie and while I think its a good Bond, its just as silly as every other one.

Connery is my Bond because TVNZ could apparently only get the rights to knock-off Never Say Never Again for my entire childhood, which was totally worth it for Kim Basinger and the video game scene. (same as they could apparently only play Empire Strikes Back and The Making of ROTJ every Xmas eve for like 10 years straight)

I think a lot of kids are like this, at least I was. It's really hard to understand the idea of "camp" before you can even grasp sarcasm and like abstract thinking. You either unironically like something or unironically don't, and you haven't yet had the realization that your subjective opinions don't reflect actual quality

Dalton's films are both top ten and I hate when people dismiss him, his films were doing everything Craig's did, better, a decade before he was even cast.
