People in this very thread technically aren't taking it seriously enough. And none of them are chuds. Every page there's someone saying they had to go to the grocery or hardware store. There's still risk of transmission with a cloth mask, and I doubt their their need to go to the hardware store in person was worth the risk, nor that their need was special enough to outweigh anyone else's need who also chose to go to the store.

So if people here, who I hope are typically better informed than many, can't even follow strict sheltering rules, I have zero hope for the average chud who makes fun of "pro-maskers" as they're calling them.

We're going to have to wait until people in dumb countries all know someone who has either died from, or been nearly killed by Covid before they start to take social distancing seriously. And even then, given their financial situation, (like we are already seeing) they might not be able to do it given the economy needs the blood of the poor to function.

Work sent me a box of 50 N95 masks and 2 boxes of nitrile gloves for use over the next 4 months when travel opens back up again and I can go back to flying all over the country. They're also sending a box of cloth masks.

Florida update: pools at my condo complex were packed full yesterday. Plenty of old and younger people gathering with no masks throughout. 2 of my wife's coworkers (all WFH) went to the beach yesterday near Cocoa. The first one arrived at 9am, the second around 10am and said there was no parking to be had. Beach was also packed full of people. Went to Publix on saturday and it was fully stocked with meats. All employees were wearing masks and gloves (finally!) and ~67% of people were wearing masks of some sort. People were relatively polite. A friend was able to get the PPP loan and is opening their small restaurant later this week while attempting the 25% capacity as apparently they have several people asking on social media to open it up.

Florida's number go up for sure.

It's impossible to avoid all contacts for weeks/months. What we should aim for is minimizing risks, being informed and transparent about numbers and risks, being responsible.

I admit it's more difficult in some countries than others, due to a variety of factor but mainly the culture. But I don't think it's really helping to shame people for still having to go to the grocery store or for wanting to see friends.

We have been in lockdown for weeks now here in Belgium, but people have a very pragmatic view of the situation. We know we have to stay home and minimize contacts, so we do it 99% of the time. But yes I have been visiting my parents living 500 meters away a few times. We stayed outside and didn't get close, but I can tell it was really important for their mental health since they can't see their friends and have actually been home since december when my father got hit by a car, and was in recovery since.

I still think this crisis will be very revealing for societies, how selfish/empathic people are, how government treat people (like children or like responsible adults), what values are more important, etc. So really there's not perfect guidelines for all people worldwide. Some countries could be more lax, other will have to be more strict, or just more cynical.

yeah, im starting to consider visiting my mum. i'll stay in the garden and chat to her basically as i don't see the risk of that. i was considering sleeping in her summer house too as i haven't done an overnight bike trip for months and i'm getting itchy but want to do something which is responsible.

Nearly every single grocery store and big box retail like Target/Walmart has required their employees to wear masks and gloves for over a month now here in Ohio. But uh, I guess Florida is just that insane and no one cares in your godawful state. Lol.

Also siding with history and all the experts saying "hey idiots second wave much"...thinking this year will be a return to the normal at any point is full-on delusional. Hard to fault people for losing it in various ways trying to wrap their heads around that...

What does this mean?

You think it will self regulate, then state businesses can't survive, then state you're thankful for them operating at a loss like that.
After that I think you said you don't think this year will be normal, if I can parse that, and then finish with a solemn nod to "people be crazy, bro."

Chances are that in-person schooling will be a thing of the past (and/or reserved for expensive private schools) once this is over anyways.

I work for a state government, and we are discovering that tele-education is about as (in)effective as in-person education, and tele-education is much cheaper, so... :capitalism:

So, the 50% or 25% occupancy rules are based off of the building's occupancy limit set by the fire marshalls right?

How often do these businesses get close to hitting occupancy limit in normal conditions? Does a 25-50% limit actually mean fewer people in the store/restaurant or are there a significant number of businesses that routinely operate at this level of capacity anyway?

if a theater is 6 rows of 6, 50% means 3 people in every row, 25% means..one and maybe a little person and/or child on your shoulders.

why would you even run films at that point if you're looking at either 9-18 people in a 36 seat theater at best, assuming people want to risk it before a vaccine, you are prepared for liability as the business, blah blah.

Maine’s Sunday River Brewing shuts down again after losing state licenses

quote:

Maine restaurant owner Rick Savage followed through on his vows to reopen for business on Friday, defying a state order that all eateries remain closed until June because of the coronavirus.

But by the end of the day, Savage announced that Sunday River Brewing Co. in Bethel would once again close “until further notice” after the state revoked his health licenses.

More than 150 people had lined up to eat at the restaurant by mid-afternoon Friday as the eatery reopened despite orders from Gov. Janet Mills, according to the Portland Press Herald.

“I can’t tell them where to stand and what to do,” Savage told the Bangor Daily News of his customers, many of whom were not observing guidelines for social distancing by standing 6 feet apart as they waited to get into the restaurant. “We’re America. If they want to isolate, they can isolate.”

Savage made an appearance on Fox News’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight” the day before, criticizing the governor’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and encouraging other businesses to follow his lead in defying orders to stay closed.

At one point during the interview, Savage offered up what he said was Mill’s cellphone number and encouraged viewers to call her directly and dared state officials to take him to court.

“We’re encouraging all businesses in Maine to open up,” he said on the program. “We should have never been shut down in the first place. We need to open back up, get this summer tourist business going, or we’re going to lose a third of our restaurants (and) who knows how many motels and other businesses. So we’re advocating for everybody, not just for my restaurant. It’s time to go back to work.”

By around 4 p.m. on Friday, the state had revoked his liquor and health licenses, according to the Press Herald.

During a press conference outside the busy restaurant, Savage insisted he would stay open, calling the state’s move “ridiculous,” the Daily News reports.

“I’m staying open,” he said. “I’m defying the order with no licenses and they’re going to fine me every day.”

The restaurant owner urged people to donate to a GoFundMe page, “Maine Back to Work Fund,” that was launched to raise money for Sunday River Brewing Co. and other businesses opening, to help pay fines they incur and finance the legal action Savage said he is planning against the state.

Savage singled out Mills for the state’s move to revoke his licenses, referencing his appearance with Carlson on Thursday.

“I did call her out, I gave her phone number out,” he said. “It’s retaliation. I didn’t make her look very good, but she hasn’t made herself look very good. So it’s nothing we did. We’re just trying to get open and trying to do it civilly and never once coming after people.”

Mills’s office did not immediately return a request for comment from Boston.com.

On Friday during a press conference, the governor urged the state to come together in facing the challenges of the coronavirus pandemic. As of Friday, there have been 1,123 confirmed cases of the virus in the state and 55 people have died.

“This virus is testing the limits of our patience, the limits of our economic stability, the limits of our state’s health and endurance,” she said. “Let us stand up to show the world that, no matter the challenge, no matter the difficulty, we will persevere.”

The Daily News reports that the restaurant served about 250 people by 6 p.m. on Friday. A few hours later, the restaurant announced that it would close until further notice. But the business continued to serve customers through at least 10 p.m., according to the Press Herald.

“We will be closed for the weekend as our state permits have been taken away,” a message read on the business’s Facebook page on Saturday. “Monday we are going check on our Federal Permits before we make decisions on re-opening.”
