I'm not trying to convince the Bernie or Bust crowd to vote D either. I'll continue to happily explain why voting (D) is the right thing to do in this election, but I certainly have no expectation that I'm going to convince a Something Awful Bernie or Buster over the internet to do the right thing. Honestly I'm becoming more and more down with y'all doing your protest vote. Do it, feel good, and if things go the way I hope they do then we win a huge victory without you and can then safely write you off while the actual progressives follow the Virginia model and do the hard work to make the nation and the world better off.

Son of Thunderbeast posted:By that logic, if you live in a swing state and you don't vote for Trump, you're 100% helping Biden win the election. Their logic isn't just broken for this reason; it also implies that any absence of support for Biden helps Trump. So by not phone-banking for Biden, you are helping Trump. Heck, that's even worse than not voting for Biden - you might have persuaded more than 1 people to vote for him! If you say "the burden of voting is less than the burden of phone-banking" (though this is kind of questionable depending on where you live), then someone could just phone or text-bank for 30 minutes! And this is even more true if you don't live in a swing state! Why aren't Xombie and How are u phone/text-banking for Biden? Why aren't they donating $20 to him? Do they want Trump to win? Where is the line drawn where someone can be condemned for not taking action to stop Trump? I don't see any reason to randomly draw that line at voting, since minimal volunteering or donating can have a greater effect. Xombie posted:I'm actually allowed to criticize whoever I want. Perhaps there is a reason why you get so much more riled up about someone like Ventura, who doesn't really have anything to do with the variety of things bad about this country and its actions, than you do someone like Biden. Perhaps that says something about your own beliefs and ideology. Phone posted:ventura's not even running, why are you wasting a million calories over this? are you just doing it for the love of the game? did you wake up and mix your scalding hot coffee with a scolding cold one this morning? did you just want to browse through imdb today? which is it? It's the same reason they despise Glenn Greenwald. Because their perception of politics is fundamentally about a cultural conflict, the things that motivate them emotionally tend to be based in "what type of person" the politician is, and "person who is outside of the mainstream and/or believes wacky conspiracy theories*" is up there with rednecks in terms of the types of people they absolutely despise. So they'll hypocritically use policy/ideological arguments against the people they hate that also apply to the people they like (except usually much worse), but this isn't surprising because those arguments were only ever post hoc rationalization for their gut dislike towards those people to begin with. * that liberals don't believe, since they obviously have their own fair share of wacky conspiracy theories
