threelemmings posted:There's also some arrogance there: Leto knows it's a trap, Harkonnen knows Leto knows it's a trap, and everyone thinks they can outplay each other. Add in the feudalism, add in that Arrakis is technically a promotion, etc. Also the money is so good it's like one of those movie setups, like "we'll give you a billion dollars IF you can survive being rolled in BBQ sauce and tossed onto the savannah during lion season." If you think you could punch a lion that'd be a pretty good deal. Same but Bernie in the 2020 dem primary tbh

To pass the time, some background pieces/research for my Dune project: Caladan is the third planet of Delta Pavonis, Arrakis the third planet of Canopus. Canopus is actually about 60x larger than Delta Pavonis (which is itself a little bigger than our Sun), I chose not to show that to scale here. Canopus also shines about 10,000x brighter. Inner system of Canopus, as described in the Dune Encyclopedia. Not shown are Ven, a pale pink super-Jupiter 26x larger than Extaris, and Renova, a distant Seban-scale Pluto analog. Just one of my favorite quotes.

The rules for the expansion for the Dune boardgame are up online, which is super exciting for those of us that play and love it, but even if you have zero interest in it, you gotta admit that the final page is INCREDIBLY Dune: https://www.gf9.com/Portals/0/Documents/GF9/IxianAndTleilaxuRulebook.pdf

It's nice, but you wouldn't see colour in the areas of the planets not exposed to direct sunlight. They'd be relatively very dark, think of a non-full moon or seeing Venus through a telescope. Canopus would be noticably bluer than the other star too. Xaintrailles fucked around with this message at 13:52 on May 6, 2020 |

The text suggests two options, either the Atreides move to Arrakis, or they go renegade and find somewhere to hide (with the family atomics) outside the Imperium. I don't exactly remember them having to hide, it's more like refusing such opportunity despite the risk and obvious trap was to admit they suck forfeit their plans for the empire. Not really much, but, the designers of the boardgame did a twitch stream the other day, and said that they'd been shown shorts for the new movie which were supposed to be for cons and the like. They didn't really say anything about what it looked like, so the only news was that said shorts exist, but the subtle intonation they used implied that the guild navigator is a fool and that the cinematography is banging, although if you REALLY listened carefully and watched their fingers, you could see that what they actually wanted to say was "what's happening, what is Twitch?"

All the art for the leaders is all poo poo, but it was in the main game? Or do you mean this update vs '79 one? It was poo poo in that too, but I guess at least it has its odd 70s charm. It's SO annoying that they've got failson as an advisor, though I obviously can't blame them, but it means there's no Scytale which is basically criminal. I guess Malky and Hwi are out of the question (I'm only on book 4 don't hurt me if there are better Ixian candidates) but I'm guessing all these Ix characters are failson originals (do not steal) as well? It is indeed, the best boardgame. It was so good on the livestream, someone says like "Don't you think this new card is overpowered?". Was entirely ready for some spiel like "Well we extensively playtested it and found that statistically blah blah blah". Instead one of the super oldschool give-no fucks OG designers is just like, "....Yeah? It's Dune! It isn't fair!" Which was just.. SO refreshing to hear.

No, I mean the traitor token art in this sucks compared to the '79 verson. Search my post history, I posted all the traitor disks from '79 a page or two back and they are exceedingly cool and good. But yeah, it's not just a complex boardgame....it's a complex boardgame about The Philosophy of Boardgames

I finally got around to reading the Dune series this year (I'm at book three). It's different from what I was expecting, I guess I'd assumed it'd be more in an adventure novel style, but there's a lot of statecraft, backstabbing, and no fixed protagonist. Reminds me of Asimov's Foundation series, even a little of Game of Thrones. Not bad, although sometimes it gets a little too esoteric for my liking.

Plans within plans within plans isn’t a meme for nothing. It’s kind of the reason it’s always been deemed unfilmable since so much of the actual interesting stuff is either inner monologue or not understandable without a running commentary. God Emperor would basically be my dinner with andre but with Jason Momoa climbing a cliff while gwendoline christie splooshed watching him in between.
