It's just the flashpoint for something that's been building since the mid-00s -- theaters absolutely still have their place in society, but only for stuff you'd want to see on a big screen. The tricky part is a lot of movies can be genuinely better on a big screen, but most people don't care enough and half-watching it on their phone or laptop is absolutely fine (and Trolls 2 [hah] definitely falls into that category), so theaters have been in a slow, inexorable march to decide what's "worth it" or not. The best theaters I've seen have embraced regular retro screenings, "party" or "rowdy" screenings, but even that might not be enough for balance sheets and I absolutely get why some rear end in a top hat executive upset that he might lose financing on his second Aruba home would get pissy and ban an entire company from their chain.

So they're losing money to a streaming service so their big brain response is to force a big studio to only use streaming services? Brilliant.

Theaters are going to stick around. The difference is that, instead of keeping 99% of the ticket sales, the studios are going to keep 99% of the ticket sales and also a piece of the concession stand action. Is the world ready for a $36 medium popcorn? We are about to find out.

Worth noting that Trolls is a kids' movie and that plonking the kids to watch is so so SO much easier than taking them to the theater.

We've got theatres with VIP access meaning no kids, actually comfortable chairs, beer and half decent food served to your chair. It's like watching a movie at home but 2 tix and 2 beers and some nachos and fries cost as much as a home entertainment system.

The big brain response is to try to force Universal to back out and abandon the streaming idea completely. Except it was a small brain response because they didn't understand that they don't actually have that kind of leverage. It's kind of a shame, I get that it's cheaper and more convenient but I would miss the experience of the cinema, both because the giant screen and big sound system and nothing else around isn't exactly something I can re-create at home, and also as a brokebrain it's one of the few reasons I leave my neighbourhood and I quite like making the trip.

Fairfax County cancelled classes the day they were supposed to start online because nothing worked. (They actually started with a two hour delay because nobody could log in to Blackboard.) They they cancelled again two days later because the system updates they needed took from Tuesday night to Thursday morning.
