I mean they mentioned decoctions in that article just last page, unless they translated it into something different that's basically the same ol boiled into water distilled "essence" that American homeopathic poo poo is made of. Maybe crystal healing and the more hippie new age type stuff?

All my Chinese friends are absolutely baffled about guns or police killing people. Every time they see in the news about a shooting or a cop killing an unarmed (usually black) person they’re like ???? how does this happen, all the time? Any time someone goes on a trip to the US people warn them about guns or violent crime and stuff. Also Trump as a whole and current UK happenings have made several of my more outspoken and liberal Chinese friends jokingly (??) reconsider if democracy is actually good/think people from those places have squandered their freedom.

Freedom to choose means that you also get the freedom to choose wrong or make bad choices, and with that comes the freedom to fix those choices. This is why democracies can adapt to change and course correct effectively while authoritarian regimes can't help but goosestep into their own graves

The biggest derangement is that flag = troops and not doctors, teachers, troops, diplomats, scientists, etc - everything that actually makes a country people idealize enough to risk their lives landing in.

Fojar38 posted:Freedom to choose means that you also get the freedom to choose wrong or make bad choices, and with that comes the freedom to fix those choices. A larger contributor is the distribution of power through federal styles of government. Distributed government allows for significant trial and error. Centralized government means that bad policy is amplified and good policy is harder to ascertain. China has dealt with this before. In the early 15th century, the Chinese navy under Zheng he was the most advanced in the world. They had numerous voyages all throughout the south pacific and Indian ocean. However by mid-century, domestic political issues with the centralized Ming government put an end to the overwhelming naval superiority of the Chinese. Meanwhile in Europe, an Italian propositioned the leaders of Portugal, England, Genoa and Venice to support a transatlantic voyage without success. Only after getting the king and queen of Spain to agree to funding does he achieve the first major foreign exploration of the new world. How would history have differed if Ming China was not so centralized and based upon politics of the court eunuchs? Where would we be if the Chinese with their superior naval technology had crossed the pacific and set up colonies on the American west coast? We see a similar concept today with the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2. Multiples states are keeping strict lockdowns in place. Other states are beginning to reopen society. Is either strategy the correct one? We will soon find out, but only on a local scale. If the entire country had a unified policy, you could expect the negative effects to be much greater than the segmented approach currently underway.

UltraRed posted:Dunno how they do it in China, never been invited to look, but I knew was the case with the several families I stayed with in Japan. I used to date a Japanese girl who would do this too. I thought it was a waste of power and was kind of surprised someone would do this. It tasted better and less dry than I had expected from something which had been kept warm for days on end though. The same girl also shocked me later by suddenly and adamantly deciding that cold water is deadly, so I don't really trust her judgement on food safety. She also tried returning rice when she realized she had bought rice made in China and began to panic she ate some. My current girlfriend is Thai, and she has left rice in the cooker a couple of days a couple of times too, but she hasn't left it on ever. We've definitely thrown out moldy rice at some point before. So I think, at least in my experience, it's fairly common throughout Asia, regardless of whether or not it's a health risk. We're currently soaking some sticky rice for 24hr. When I die, I just want you all to know it's been a honor posting with you. Shadow0 fucked around with this message at 05:39 on May 8, 2020 |

This is the least crazy part, rice is very good at pulling pollutants out of soil and concentrating them in the plant. You should not buy rice from the PRC. Even in China, anyone who can afford it buys imported rice. In Chengdu most of that was from Thailand, I dunno if that's China-wide or just because of proximity.

A few weeks ago I was riding my scooter and a local on an electric bike pulled up next to me and whipped out his phone to film me while shouting "halloooooo my friend." He had difficulty handling his bike and the phone at the same time as he wobbled into oncoming traffic. Followed me for about a kilometer. The second time a truck almost flattened him I was laughing because this guy is nuts. He, unaware that he nearly got splattered, also started laughing stiltedly.

I still remember being absolutely baffled by the people pooping directly outside the train station bathroom on the streets until the moment I entered it. Same day I also saw a guy pooping in a trash can directly opposite a policeman who stood there doing nothing. Also people pooping in front of the Nine Dragon Wall in the Forbidden Palace. I guess my entire trip to China was 95% seeing people pooping in surprising locations. The babies' pants don't cover the butts to streamline the poop-to-streets process.

Magna Kaser posted:https://twitter.com/hancocktom/status/1258642211110977536 Is that just Shanghai, or are other regions/cities following that order? I remember there was a very obvious march of infection going toward the ultrametropolis areas for a while, but then all the news stopped and only the random unverified mobile videos of "building door welding", "barriers hiding people" and "death wards" managed to get around the Great Wall without going past Uncle Xi. Pretty sure it was a screeching halt and full-on lockdown to prevent the big areas from catching it, but China's reasonably good at not letting news out, particularly when oohhboy posted:NASCAR NASCAR was originally about using stock-looking cars to evade the law when running bootleg alcohol. People being showoffs, wanted to show them off. Eventually, alcohol was allowed again, but people really liked turning out to watch these souped up cars tear a line down a track(the bootleg alcohol they also served at events was a tasty bonus). Eventually, people were fussing over "rules" like "how 'stock' does a stock car need to be?" so an official ruling body was formed. Due to parts costs and cutting-edge tech to win, it became a rich man's hobby, so the only people left to race were rich folks--BUT WAIT! Advertising was a gimmick, and companies decided they could give money to people so they could afford cars and parts. That's how cars turned into billboards, and teams were formed. Like anything, they eventually capped total teams, so now if you want in, you have to pay more to get on/in/with one of the current teams, driving the sport further into corporate and advertising interests.
