So about .31% of the entire NYC population has died from corona so far. It's possible it could reach 1% within a year. Hard to argue that the true mortality rate is around the flu's with these numbers.

It’s very easy to argue that it’s just the flu someone did it to me on Twitter just yesterday. When someone points out that it’s killing 2500 people a day and that even a terrible flu season is like 500 people a day you just say “Bullshit, it’s just the flu.”

Don't forget a lot of people got the gently caress out of NYC as the state of affairs got worse and worse... there's an unknown number of New Yorkers that left the city that could've died elsewhere in the country.

My friend's mom works for TSA at the Ft. Myers, FL airport. She said that they have been getting busy the past few weeks as people from NY/NJ that had fled to their south Florida friends/family/second homes are now feeling that it's safe to go home.

There's an unknown number of NYC residents that have died from covid in NYC. We probably won't have a solid idea for years.

Had family today say that the covid death numbers are being massaged because 'They get paid more from covid deaths'

And yet at the same time the hospitals are apparently empty and going broke due to lack of business from optional procedures?

But at least the beach is open again but not packed.

That's the latest right wing idiocy spreading on social media. Apparently doctors are now falsely diagnosing patients with COVID because the hospital will make more money from the federal government.

Nah, it's easy thanks to right wing media coaching. They'll either say:

1) The mortality rate is artificially high because there are so many unconfirmed cases out there and the real percentage is much more like the flu
or
2) The deaths are inflated because we're attributing non-Covid deaths to the virus for reasons

I've been bringing up the Total Deaths and Excess Deaths. You can argue about categorizing covid vs. non-covid deaths, but it's a lot harder to argue that doctors have no idea if someone is dead or alive. Right-wing media coaching hasn't covered this topic, so I've found that people either (a) ignore it, or (b) keep trying to drag the conversation back to their theories about miscategorization.

I love the mental gymnastics that the idiots have to go through.

-every spring we cancel all flights and put airlines on the brink of ruin
-every spring we put millions on unemployment
-every spring we shut down Disney Land/World
-every spring the only story in the news is the common flu
-every spring we create a billion flu tracking apps
-every spring we cancel schools and make millions of students stay home for months
-every spring hospitals nearly collapse from too many flu patients
-every spring funeral homes are overloaded with dead
-every spring there is a massive rush on hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes, and basic foodstuffs
-every spring meat packing plants have to close down due to employee illnesses

<idiots change gears> "This is a democrat/big business plan . . . to . . . blame Trump!"

Yes, because big business hates Republican presidents who give them massive tax breaks, handouts, and typically write in new laws that allow them to skirt regulations and tax procedures.
Yes, because big business hates it when a president gives them lucrative contracts and programs whenever they tweet something nice about him.
Yes, because big businesses love going a full fiscal quarter-one year while losing massive amounts of money . . . instead of waiting until November to see if the situation resolves itself?

C) claim lockdown directly caused the deaths somehow (even though it's much more likely to drastically reduce death rates since things like traffic accidents, flu, bar fights etc will be way down). When you ask how theyll list off things that sound feasible at first glance like, i dunno, domestic violence or suicide or stuff related to hospitals being semi-closed, even though those things bear no resemblance to corona and are easy to track as not being elevated or sufficiently elevated to explain the massive gulf

Even IF you go the route of "yes technically it is less lethal than the flu", it's ignoring the fact that far more people end of hospitalized, for longer periods, on more expensive equipment and requiring more medical staff to help than they typically would with the flu. This is the main issue, as it stretches hospital staff, resources, and space very thin for a much longer period of time which has a snowball effect for anyone else needing medical services.

The average length of stay at my hospital is around 15 days still. We've thankfully been able to take down our ICU expansion tent as our overall numbers have gone down (hospitalizations in Illinois have generally gone down) and our ICU is at only 90% capacity, but it's gonna be a mess in a few weeks if covid numbers spike at the same time mid to late may that we have finally scheduled all of our elective surgeries.

what's the reasoning behind having elective surgeries this early into the pandemic anyways? it seems like a big mistake given the likelihood of a late May-June increase in COVID cases. I mean, I'm originally from Illinois. Cook county is the big boss of the state wrt population, and the rest of the state is kinda loving.. i don't know how to describe it, but i don't think social distancing & face masks are gonna be really taken seriously as the state reopens.
