The TLOU isn't necessarily the right choice but I would appreciate more situations where you get at least some variety of response that isn't 'run directly towards the person who murdered my twelve friends for no good reason." I think trying to frame every enemy in a game as a cold evil mercenary who likes eating babies is more absurd than the idea that they might be friends and be really pissed off at you for killing their pet dog.

I just think it probably needs to come in a game where killing isn't an option and you can make your own choices on how to handle subject matter instead of "Isn't it sad this guy loves his dog? Now make sure to craft a SUPER Shiv so you can stab his eyes out."

This twist would work GREAT if you were in the same headspace as Ellie, and were glad to murder whatever obstacle the game put in front of you (i.e. the very, very short scene in Spec Ops), but if you're not comfortable with what's going on? You'll probably be treated the same way. This is the only oversight where Spec Ops fell on its face for some people, but now, it's the whole time. It just reminds me of Funny Games minus the point of Funny Games.

I'd like to point out that the meta part of SO:TL wasn't intended as attacking the people playing it in general so much as it was the specific type of people who'd play generic manshooter games, kill a small country's worth of people while ignoring the story and feeling like they're the good guys with the loading screen messages and such ("Do you feel like a hero yet?" "Do you remember why you're here?" "How many Americans have you killed today?" and so on) not being aimed at people who don't feel that way. For those people it's more intended to think about it in a wider scope sense, like the way war damages people beyond physically or the stress soldiers undergo and such.

That's going off what the lead writer has said, at least. Death of the author, etc, but I think it's still important to consider the creator's intent.

Do people who play those games while ignoring the story actually think they're the good guys or do they think they're having fun shooting videogame characters? I'm not sure I agree with that premise.

the call of duty game that came out the year after spec ops, had america literally glass the middle east and then target south america for their oil, which south america responded to by federating and building a comically large wall on the border. in response america, who had gotten nukes completely banned because of what they had done to the middle east, put in orbit a kinectic weapon that had the power to cause nuke-like destruction with inert rods and pointed it at south america, which prompted them to take control of it and use it against the USA instead. the game takes places right after this and you play as the USA and you are unambigiously the "good guys" according to the story, which ends with you wiping south america off the face of the earth with the giant space weapon.

i hope this helps answer the question.

I don't know if they are. I think they're just making a horror game and some at ND are reveling in the shocks. I thought that the end of tlou was pretty well done, but it was still just a decent ending to a horror story. They did a better job than the walking dead did ending many of it's seasons.

Yeah, it'd fit fine in a game like the Thief games, and so they did it.

Well, except for Dark Messiah, because that one had a different premise and ambience, and perhaps Th4if or Thi4f or whatever stupid poo poo they did with "Thief 4" or perhaps it did it too.

I'm afraid the post dedicated to describing the story did not in fact answer to me whether players who ignore that story have any sort of morality in their head when they're concentrating on blowing up and shooting the videogame people, no.

I think they're very unconcerned with whether they are good or bad and are focused on how fun it is to blow things up and shoot things in a videogame.

Yeah i know what the author wrote, but that's kinda the least interesting part of video games when the actual game part is generic manshooter. There's a lot of games that have you do the generic video game shooting mans and then say 'hah, isn't this kinda hosed up?' and the proper response is 'yeah, it is kinda hosed up, but who's the fuckup here? the developer who's only really got fine-tuned game mechanics for shooting tons of people while even dialog-heavy games are still dragon's lair++?'

i think people play those games as the good guy and think theyre killing the bad guys because all of the games yell about how youre the good guy killing the bad guy. also the people who entirely ignore the story to the point of like, skipping the cutscenes and literally not understanding the plot thats happening very loudly in front of them is a segment i dont believe actually exists.
