Ok I'm starting to see this phrase a lot these days:

Is this an evolution of the phrase "boots on the ground" which in turn means "people present at the scene"?

just plain loving wrong laura, you've inserted a conditional "should go to work as long as it's safe" when it's actually an aspirational statement that you "must go to work, which we hope will be safe"

looks like Laura's not the only right-wing hack who is just reading what they want to into big daddy boris' strong and clear advice

no where in his rambling speech does it actually say that you shouldn't go back to work if it's not safe, it says you should go to work which they want to be safe

"go back to work if you can" is a funny way of phrasing "you should go back to work if you can't work from home"

There were extremely brief snow showers in Inverness though mostly it was hail. It sucked and was super cold with the wind. But there doesn't look like there's any more snow on the hills so yeah, it's a dumb headline

It goes with the Savile stuff from earlier, Starmer's used to working in an environment where unless a clear solution is spelled out one way or the other, the default response is to do nothing but say that it's possible that something could be done in theory.

The UKMT Fudge Baron

Fudge related post follows

And we’re back!

Following a short hiatus due to the current pandemic messing with our supply lines, we’re now taking orders to ship in the first week of June. We also have some new flavours for you to enjoy.

The world’s gone mad, so why not try some fudge to cheer yourself up?

May flavours:

Original Vanilla

Dark Chocolate - By special request; the same recipe as our popular milk chocolate, but with high cocoa percentage dark chocolate swapped in!

Unicorn Barf - marshmallows both melted into this and sprinkled on top with crunchy sugar unicorns. A favourite amongst our younger customers!

Chocolate Orange: It’s chocolate, it’s orange, it’s delicious! What’s more to say?

Rum and Raisin - The traditional favourite, made with spiced rum

All bags of fudge cost £3.50; get a box of five for £15! Postage costs for up to a kilogram are £3.55; for larger orders please ask. 🙂

As always, please drop us a message here or to Fudjit.orders@gmail.com to place an order. Payment is accepted via PayPal or direct bank transfer 🙂

All orders will ship before June 10th (due to variable post office opening times an exact date cannot be given)

We also have a new Goon Special this month: Apple Pie flavour. Made with cinnamon and dried apple for a delicious, comforting combination.

Edit: Miftan, are you psychic or something? You posted as I was typing that up..

It's not just the only moral thing to say, or the only thing you would expect a self-described socialist to say, it's the actual law that they should be able to not go into work if it's not safe.

http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1996/18/section/44

quote:

44 Health and safety cases.
(1)An employee has the right not to be subjected to any detriment by any act, or any deliberate failure to act, by his employer done on the ground that—
(a)having been designated by the employer to carry out activities in connection with preventing or reducing risks to health and safety at work, the employee carried out (or proposed to carry out) any such activities,
(b)being a representative of workers on matters of health and safety at work or member of a safety committee—
(i)in accordance with arrangements established under or by virtue of any enactment, or
(ii)by reason of being acknowledged as such by the employer, the employee performed (or proposed to perform) any functions as such a representative or a member of such a committee,
[F1(ba)the employee took part (or proposed to take part) in consultation with the employer pursuant to the Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations 1996 or in an election of representatives of employee safety within the meaning of those Regulations (whether as a candidate or otherwise),]
(c)being an employee at a place where—
(i)there was no such representative or safety committee, or
(ii)there was such a representative or safety committee but it was not reasonably practicable for the employee to raise the matter by those means,he brought to his employer’s attention, by reasonable means, circumstances connected with his work which he reasonably believed were harmful or potentially harmful to health or safety,
(d)in circumstances of danger which the employee reasonably believed to be serious and imminent and which he could not reasonably have been expected to avert, he left (or proposed to leave) or (while the danger persisted) refused to return to his place of work or any dangerous part of his place of work, or
(e)in circumstances of danger which the employee reasonably believed to be serious and imminent, he took (or proposed to take) appropriate steps to protect himself or other persons from the danger.

Section 44 does nothing to protect you as all your work needs to do is say they have taken all precautions and your workplace is safe. If you don't turn up then they can fire you. You might be able to get a tribunal to go your way if you can prove it wasn't safe but you're not getting one of them till next year so good luck I guess.

Fair enough, but surely how practical the law is to enforce (if we're assuming the workplace definitely is unsafe and a tribunal would find that) shouldn't affect whether you'd support a union telling it's members to follow it or not?
