I don't see what the big deal is, literally everywhere in the USA should be extending stay at home for 3 months. I don't think people's brains can handle it though which is why most just keep it going week by week.

I was wondering about that... how do you guys, and people around you, and the rest of the US population manage without financial help? A lot got to switch to working from home, but what about those who can't? I'd be literally starving without the canadian CERB , I don't understand how places that didn't get such measures put in place don't devolve to chaos. The answer is beans, right?

I am in just that situation and I have literally lost 90% of my friends over my opinions that yes, it would be super nice to be able to isolate until the end of summer, kick this thing's rear end and then have something close to normal again. But... But literally, and I'm not asking for sympathy on this dead gay internet forum, but I am so screwed financially I'm honestly considering sex work at this point. And not the 'nice' kind. I wasn't a highly paid one, and I worked restaurants to keep money coming in, but you know. Live the dream, all that. I've been denied for unemployment three times now. I'm still legally married to someone in another state who doesn't support me but he is on my records so I'm denied welfare. I've had cancer twice in the past 20 years and I was overdue for a mammo but I can't get hold of anyone at medicaid/medicare and the low cost clinics here are closed til... whenever. My DL runs out with my birthday this year, but the DMV is closed. Yes, our state governor says police have the power to use their judgement about lack of valid ID. But does the bank, to cash a check? Can I travel on the bus, or the train? Nobody seems to know. It's literally up to 'Maybe if the person at the desk that day is in a good mood'. I have $16 in the bank. I have a bag of rice, two of lentils, half a freezer full of hamburger, some butter, some flour. The food bank in this town is open 3 days a week and only by appointment. When my phone runs out next month, I don't have the $45 to keep it on. I have called places about mental health. I was told they weren't able to take anyone in crisis because of the shutdown, maybe I could schedule a tele appointment in 4 - 6 weeks. Or call the police, maybe they have resources. Someone suggested I try the domestic violence or addiction hotlines, which was a great idea, and in any other time would have been good, but... not so much now. Shelter is full, because they can only take half the people they normally do. I was not a bad person. At least I don't think I was. But I am here, at 57, without child or parent or large support network, and the ONLY way I can survive is to go back to work. I've been turned down for 4 jobs in the past two weeks and I suspect it was because of my age. One interviewer literally said to me "I'd hate for you to come here to work and have something... happen, because you're in the danger zone". Yes, everybody has told me, 'file that with BOLI, that's discrimination'. I'm well aware of that. I'm also aware that you can't prove what was said between two people in an interview, and that it isn't the first time I've run into that. You can only beat your head against a wall so long until you stop, you know? My former friends have now walked away because you know, I'm apparently a boomer and a Karen and all I want is a haircut. This hurts a lot more than it should. But that's fine, they have jobs and such and I'm honestly glad for them. I'm glad for anyone who's going to come out of this alive. I've lost 7 people I cared dearly about in 8 weeks from causes not involving covid19 and I've been told "Well, there must have been something wrong with them anyway, dear". So for all the non-Americans reading, this is what it's like at the bottom. I had a fun life even though I knew it was just hanging on by my fingernails, and it would have held me over until about 65 or 70, and frankly I didn't plan on going much beyond that anyway. But here we are, somebody ate a bat and now there are a lot of people in free fall. I don't support these idiots who are waving guns around and screaming that there's no virus, but I've been pushed onto their side by a lot of my former friends. I need a job. I need an economy. That may sound selfish but it is literally starve, or gently caress for money right now. TLDR thanks for coming to my TED talk. Thanks for not saying we're all crazy.
