I had never heard the term 'loon' applied to anything other than someone who is crazy as in lunatic or Canadian 'loonies' which I assumed came from the same origins.

Loons are in fact adorable and the mascot of the USA getting destroyed by its own hubris is very apt.

Loons are both beautiful and terrifying. When you're camping by a lake in northern MN, they sing all night. They have a very creepy call. It's haunting.

Prescription painkillers are the loving worst. When I worked in vital records I can't even tell you how many death certificates I saw which listed the cause of death as "mixed drug toxicity", which is almost always talking about prescription drugs. The scientist who finds a way to treat chronic pain without opioids will save as many lives as Jonas Salk.

Prince was basically murdered though. His doctor deserved jail time, not a loving $4k fine and "discipline" from the medical board.

I don't think there are many that question his musical abilities. What he did with those powers is a different matter. I do like Let's Go Crazy, that's a song I can appreciate with my caveman sensibilities.

Yeah, Prince was a musical prodigy but most of his work didn’t utilize his talent nearly as much as it could have. That’s why most people don’t realize how good he was.

Most of his videos were him just kinda dancing around with a guitar and playing a little bit here and there so I don't think many people realized the scope of his abilities

Imagined

I don't think it's that his music didn't use all of his talent, it's just that Prince recorded so much stuff that it's hard to get to grips with all of it, and he was definitely one of those artists who put things down as fast as possible and then moved on to the next thing instead of polishing just a few of the best things. He said in interviews that his favorite of his own songs was always the most recent one he wrote. And Sturgeon's Law still applies to geniuses. What is amazing when you think about it is if it's exhausting as a LISTENER to absorb his entire catalog, what was it like to be the guy MAKING all of that? I believe it's documented that he recorded over 1,000 songs. Even if 90% are meh, that's 100 fantastic songs.

His best albums are when he was with a major label that forced him to only put out the best bits and polish what he put out. He famously HATED that and it seems like after he was independent he released every brain fart he had. So the rest of his catalog is messy, but there are still diamonds in it. Right after he died I spent a few weeks listening to his entire official output and most of the bootlegs I could find. He definitely had more guitar hero tracks than "Let's Go Crazy" and "Purple Rain".

Here's a few:

https://youtu.be/mY1OnKfDJPE

https://youtu.be/4wxea_BdIcM

A lot of times you don't notice his guitar because he's running it through an effect that makes it sound like something else, ala:

Buckethead did something similar. The Pikes series (of EPs around 30 minutes long) was started when he was hospitalized for heart arrhythmia and realized that he could die at any time, so he wanted to put out as much music as possible. He reached the point where he was releasing multiple Pikes a week and is currently at 283, which means he's got over 479 appearances between his own work and his work with others. Granted, Buckethead's entire shtick is being one of the greatest guitarists in history, but a lot of the Pikes have very similar sounds and are practically interchangeable.

drat, an eerily similar thing happened with J Dilla's donuts album, which has gone on to become an all-time great in the hip hop world

quote:

In 2005, J Dilla underwent treatment at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center for complications brought on by TTP and a form of lupus.[15] While in the hospital, he worked on two albums: Donuts and The Shining.[16] 29 out of 31 tracks from Donuts were recorded in hospital,[17] using a Boss SP-303 sampler and a small 45 record player his friends brought him.[18] Records his mother and friends would bring were used as the source of the samples for the album.[6] She recalled it in the Crate Diggers documentary:[19] "When I took the crate up, and he looked through it, I think out of a whole milk crate full of 45s, I think he might have taken a dozen out of there and set them aside. He said 'you can take that back to the house'. He said 'none of that's good'."

Throughout the year his condition worsened. His legs swelled, making it difficult to walk. At times his hands swelled so much he could barely move them. If the pain was too intense, his mother would massage his fingertips, so he could continue working on the album. Sometimes he'd wake up in the middle of the night and ask his mother to move him from his bed to the instruments. According to Kelley L. Carter of Detroit Free Press, J Dilla told his doctor he was proud of the work, and that all he wanted to do was to finish the album.[20]

While working on the album, Dilla didn't allow anyone to listen to the unfinished version.[19] He got furious when he found out his mother listened to it while he was in dialysis.[4]

Donuts was ready to be released by October 2005, but according to Stones Throw, their distributor, EMI, "didn't think a weird, difficult instrumental album by an underground producer would move the projected 10,000 copies", since Dilla's previous album, Champion Sound, failed to achieve commercial success.[21] Later the label came to an understanding with the distributor and the album was set for release in early February 2006, along with a bonus single "Signs".[22]

Donuts was released on February 7, 2006, J Dilla's 32nd birthday.[23] To celebrate this, his friends, Madlib, Peanut Butter Wolf, Egon, and J Rocc, stopped by his house. However, they weren't prepared for what they saw: J Dilla, who used to be energetic despite his health condition, now was mumbling and gesturing weakly.[20][24] Three days later, on February 10, 2006, he died at his home in Los Angeles, California. According to his mother, the cause was cardiac arrest.[25]
