Pretty sure publications never insisted Al Gore always be referred to as the VP after leaving office. And if it is mentioned, it's specified as former. IIRC, the lifetime title is only for former POTUS, and specifically the term "Mr. President". And it is reasonable to get angry about people insisting on being addressed by titles that imply they're currently in a position with power to improve people's lives. Especially during a time when Drs (of political science) on twitter have a lot of medical opinions about the pandemic.
