I'd be a liar if I said I had no part in it, but at least I got my head out of my rear end as I grew up. I like to think most of the others did too but who knows.

I'm pretty happy some of the forums I frequented in the early 2000s have for the most part all faded into nothingness and/or shut down completely. Realizing about 10 years ago my Livejournal probably still existed and was immediately horrified at the prospect of my dumbshit posts about breakups and super crazy ramblings were still available to be read. Took me awhile to figure out the old email/password combo, but I was able to successfully delete it.

Hopefully the NSA are the only people who still have access to that cringey data. If I ever have kids, I'm going to teach them to write journals in their own blood and then burn them at the end of each quarter.

sure it changed, but not in some way that was at all contrary to the original "purpose" or nature of the internet.

it got bigger and more mainstream but the idea that was ever just an experiment for "fringe weirdos" is not remotely accurate. the corporations that dominated the internet in the 90s are not the same ones that do today but they weren't any less capitalist nor did they have some sort of moral qualms with big data collection, they just didnt have the amount of data yet because not as many people were using the systems and since it wasn't as mainstream, people weren't putting their real identities out there as much.

the fact that so called average people rather than just "computer nerds" or whatever started using the internet (which started happening in the late 90's, not because of the iphone) may have given these companies more of the data they can use, just as the advent of television gave advertisers a more direct way to manipulate people, but that's one of the side effects of any mode of communication becoming mainstream, not a cause or even necessarily dominant effect of it

My hometown county just surpassed Queens as the frontrunner of confirmed Covid cases

https://chicago.suntimes.com/essential-coronavirus-news/2020/5/14/21258470/cook-county-coronavirus-cases-most-queens-new-york

quote:

Cook County surpasses Queens, NY, as county with most COVID-19 cases in U.S.

On Thursday, officials reported another 138 coronavirus-related deaths in Illinois as the state’s death toll nears 4,000.

Cook County has surpassed Queens County in New York as the U.S. county with the most coronavirus cases based on Sun-Times analysis of the latest public data.

There have been 58,457 total cases of COVID-19 recorded in Cook County, which includes all of Chicago and many of its suburbs, after officials added 2,051 new cases in the last 24 hours. Queens, by comparison, added only 336 cases over the same time frame to bring its total to 58,084.

Cook County still has a lower rate of COVID-19 per capita given its population (5.1 million) is more than twice as large as Queens (2.25 million). But Queens also has a much higher population density with 20,500 people per square mile compared to 5,500 per square mile in Cook County, which can make social distancing measures more challenging to maintain.

Illinois officials announced Thursday that the statewide case total has increased to 87,937 while the death tally closes in on 4,000. Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s administration recently warned that projections show the state could see 50-150 deaths per day into June or later.

In addition to Queens, six other New York counties have been among the top ten nationwide for coronavirus case totals, while the next highest Illinois county — Lake — was No. 49 in the nation as of Wednesday with 5,662 cases.

Facing calls from some local leaders growing impatient with his phased plan to reopen regions of the state, Pritzker said “this virus is still among us.

“This pandemic is not over. And to pretend otherwise in a misguided attempt to reclaim what we’ve lost will only make this last longer.”

To be fair, back in January it wasn't unreasonable to be not overly worried about this after seeing how Ebola and SARS played out.
Definitely by March I was more than concerned as lockdown was already in effect in my country.

Thankfully we acted much earlier thanmany other countries and avoided being steamrolled like the US and UK did. Not to discount the thousands that have died of course but I feel like us actually listening to the public health officials actually spared us much hardship.

I was heavily involved in the preparations, evacuations and contingency planning for the covid response these past few months.
I've also been doing swabbing duties for weeks now. I've seen some crazy poo poo I never thought I'd see.

One of the more noteworthy ones: We were tasked with bringing a covid positive patient to a nursing home that agreed to act as a covid facility.
This particular patient was late 80's multiple health problems and end of life. I was in full hazmat PPE for the journey.
10 mins out we pre alerted and asked them to be ready. When we brought the patient inside literally all the staff were just milling around serving dinners, doing the med rounds etc in zero PPE, all the other home residents were also walking the hallways.

When we arrived at the covid wing two nurses, one of whom was the nurse manager met us. They were wearing zero PPE. No gloves, no gowns, not even a mask.
I said "do you not have PPE? I can give you some". The nurses replied, oh I'll be fine.....
I insisted she wear at least a mask and gloves which she reluctantly sigh'd and put one on.

After the handover the two nurses bitched as we were walking out. "they seem to think we needed PPE hahaha smh".

I reported them to the public health body.
Got a phone call one week later: "Oh hi, yeah thanks for telling us about that. You actually flagged a huge outbreak. Since the report, there has been over 60 new infections in the nursing home, and 13 deaths in 7 days."
There's now a legal investigation taking place.

:wtc:

Well, 13 deaths just a week later... I think they were already doomed well before your patient transfer.

John_A_Tallon posted:

Well how do you want to fix this problem you've identified?

We know exactly how to combat the pandemic because there's already been several countries which have successfully beat it down to the point where they can safely (but tentatively) start to open up again with minimal risk. The requirements are:

- Listening to experts and quickly putting their recommendations into place
- Majority of citizens agree to wear masks, wash hands and self-isolate for as long as it takes, sacrificing their comfort for the sake of others
- Centralized concerted efforts to provide PPE and equipment and support quickly and freely to hospitals
- Widespread and immediate financial safety nets for citizens & businesses
- Widespread & repeated testing for as many as possible, constant checking of temperatures etc
- Stable & unified political leadership that constantly spreads a message of unity, diligence, patience and hope

The US is not currently capable of even attempting any of those requirements. The real headfucker is that polls show that a majority of the US people are taking the pandemic seriously and are prepared to do the right thing to help hold it back but politicians, business owners and a small but rabid percentage of the population are throwing a giant baby tantrum and refusing to face the reality of the pandemic which completely negates any and all efforts from those who are taking it seriously.

This state of affairs wasn't a recent development either. During the 1918 flu epidemic there were similar protests against shutting down and wearing masks. The politicization of the southern evangelical churches (they got the taste when they decided to push Prohibition in the 1920s) which led to the Republican party courting them which led to Christianity and "Christian values" becoming inextricably linked with US politics was a big factor leading towards the current situation. The Cold War and the demonization of anything that had a whiff of 'Socialism' was a big factor. Reagonomics and 'trickle down' economic policies was a big factor. Resentment against racial & sexual equality and social movements was a big factor. 9/11 and a black president (and the possible election of a female president) broke a LOT of brains and was also a factor. The media (including the internet) amplifying the loudest voices and de-emphasizing everything else was a factor.

So to answer the question of how this can be fixed: it can't be fixed today, or any time soon. The factors that led to the current situation have been building momentum for over a century and now they're hardbaked into the spirit of the USA and it's going to take a crazy amount of time and effort to even start to apply the brakes on them even before you can start making changes for the better. This pandemic is going to be extremely lovely and cause an incalculable amount of loss and hardship to the entire country which will no doubt takes years and years to recover from and you're just going to have to hunker down and ride it out the best you can.

This is legit giving me goosebumps. I'm here self-isolating with my family for the foreseeable future, the very rare times we go out to a store or pharmacy we put on masks/gloves, and here's just like a hundred people giving no fucks.

To be fair if I lived by myself I'm in a super low-risk category and I don't care much if I get sick or not (undoubtedly a statement I'd take back if I actually got sick, as it goes) so I could sort of see going out in that scenario, but like if you have anyone in your life you care about at all then you just sort of can't do that? Even all the cases people talk about here where it's not severe enough to wind up in the hospital (thank God) sound horrifying.

Odds are you'll be fine if you get it.

But enough people aren't fine to warrant precautions.

And many survivors who were told they had "mild" cases have said it was still the shittiest experience of their entire life.

I'm still working and one of the two owners is an old white guy who listens to conservative talk radio and he still refuses to wear a mask, make customers distance/wait outside or anything while working the register in front. His business partner is at risk because she's an old lady who just had surgery and is taking all necessary precautions, and he knows I'm isolating with someone with lung cancer, and all the nearby businesses are wearing masks and have told him he should too, but he's picked his hill to die on and there's no way he's going to change his behavior until the governor gives us a loving mandate and I call the cops on him.
