it's a $400 "advanced elements" inflatable that is really easy to setup/break down and throw in the trunk

I've been taking it out into the puget sound and watching seals and eagles. it's fantastic

i keep thinking about getting an inflatable kayak, they look like fun

the annual 20% REI coupon excludes real kayaks while inflatables are included so that can be a good way to get one

inflatables are a compromise for a situation where you can't get a real kayak - they cost more and are slower and more maintenance intensive than a regular kayak but you can fit one in the trunk of your yaris. very similar niche and tradeoffs to a folding bicycle now that i think about it

also for the advanced elements models the "spine" accessory is basically required, otherwise it handles like a wet noodle with efficiency to match

yeah it's definitely a trade off but I don't have a hitch or roof rack so it's what I can use. I'm also just going out to be out, not trying to get anywhere. it handles surprisingly well in the ocean waves despite not being meant for that at all.

oh yeah not dissing it at all, its the only kayak i have as well. just pointing out that if you can make a regular kayak work in terms of storage/transport then you're a bit better off going that route

but any kayak better than no kayak obv

I have an inflatable kayak that seats 2 that fits in a backpack with all it's gear. It's amazing I'm gonna go use it today

any recs for a one-person sit-in kayak for still water? i live by a lake and i’d be able to easily walk one down there but i have no clue what brands are reliable, etc.

i hd an inflatable one a while ago but I hated it, it was just waaay too slow and wouldn’t track at all. renting a sit-on-top was more fun so i got rid of it.

I just looked at REI comments since they have an amazing return policy

we're in the same situation and have been putting it off until we have a vehicle to put them on but now I'm seriously reconsidering so we can avoid rentals

mine has paid for itself about 10x over what renting it for the same number of uses would cost. we live in a 1bedroom apartment so the inflatable is ideal

yeah easy storage seems like a big plus with inflatables, but also the open 2 seaters seem like they tend to have more space than rigid ones, so the dog can come too

5 minutes after BVMTHM and I got to the lake there was a sudden drop in temperature by like 20 degrees and thick fog just appeared but over the next hour it slowly burnt off (this was between like 1740 and 1840, the sun was low so the mist burnt off slow), it was v.dramatic and pretty but of course BVMTHM was only interested in shooting the hordes of zombies?

I wish I wasn't so poo poo with my phonecam.

last night the pacific crest trail association sent an email effectively stating that through-hiking isn't happening this year. feeling crushed. i'd been looking forward to this for years, even delayed my trip multiple times to climb the job ladder (fuckin stupid), and was determined that this season would be it. quit my job, moved and everything. i'm grateful for my health and my privileged position during this pandemic, but it's so hard for me to give this up yet again and hold on to hope that maybe next year it could work.
