You should move to black zones as soon as possible. Blue/yellow is way overcrowded. If you're in the alliance or guild, you could try to get a few people to escort you out to gravemound knoll with some cheap gear and fame farm in the area. There's 4 t5 zones relatively close and if you farm in 4.1 and die who gives a poo poo, it's incredibly cheap. Plus getting dove in t5 zones is pretty rare. It can of course happen but it's not nearly as likely. Just do not try to run by yourself during EU prime time, you will most likely die as there's been plenty of gate campers out lately.

Alternatively you can head north to sandmount strand which is away from a lot of the big fights but offers some relative peace.

Yeah, definitely come to the black zones. I've only been playing about a week and half, so take this with a grain of salt, but what I've been doing is leveling up a greataxe fame farming set to 100 in order to abuse the auto-respec feature to level my ZvZ and ganking equipment. I'm getting good cash while investing time in a long-term solution for playing anything and everything that I want. I should be hitting 100 tomorrow on several pieces of gear and I've been grinding solo in the T5s, so it's definitely doable fairly quickly.

Excellent suggestion! I have been out to the black zones before but I die almost immediately and didn't really get it. But today I snuck out there and found a solo dungeon and miraculously was able to complete it before anyone came in and found me, and got a 5.3 Stalker's Jacket (by far the best thing I've ever found) from the last boss's chest. When I'm not getting extremely wrecked the minor stress of being in a full loot pvp area is actually kinda thrilling!

So from my 1st week of playing, this is what I've gathered:

1. Get into the overflow guild/arch alliance
2. Move to Martlock if you haven't already
3. Go to the Awful Company hideout in Gravemound Knoll (this is in the black zone, enter via Conquerers Hall, Wingrass Terrace South exit)
4. The travel between Martlock and AC GMK hideout should be fairly safe if you're in the guild, you may see enemies here and there but most people in the Arch alliance
5. Start "fame farming" Albions way of calling xp grinding by doing solo green dungeons or party up, with low IP it's hard to find parties so solo dungeon works for me,
6. Do this in the areas around GMK, start with tier 5 areas then work your way up as your reaver level progresses (you get damage bonus based on your reaver level, tier 5 give you damage bonus for tier 5 zones)
7. In terms of gear, once you are Lvl 5 reaver, you can do solo dungeons with 4.1 gear (4.1 means tier 4 gear with 1 enchantment, this gives you the IP of a tier 5 gear, 4.2 = tier 6 etc)
8. Make sure to grind zones that are equivalent to your reaver level, once you hit 6 / 7 you can do those zones with the same gear, I'm currently doing solo dungeons in GMK (tier 7) in 4.1 gear
9. PvP can be done via dungeon diving, x'ing up for ganks or ZvZ, I haven't done much of those yet so someone else would be better suited to answer

Hope this helps.

I agree with you on all of those points, but with a minor addendum: While tier 7/8 dungeons are more lucrative for drops and fame the likelihood of you getting dove on increases DRAMATICALLY. You have to weigh the risks vs reward. I've only been dove on once in the T5 zones, which has allowed me to do multiple dungeons before I had to take my loot back to the hideout. Doing T7s (at least in GMK) it was basically 50/50 whether or not someone showed up.

Spears ate a decent nerf but they're still pretty good for small scale stuff and have a place. They just aren't super good for ZvZ or other big fights. The reason trinity was used in a zvz was to speed up demolition hammers to smash a hideout or gate quicker.

I would of figured that the heron stun would be good for stuff like that, but I guess there's significantly better cc's out there? I've seen some people say the twin blade staff is a good beginner zvz weapon? What role does it fill?

Stanos

Double bladed? That's a ganking weapon, has good mobility and slows people down. For zvz you use a soulscythe for the knock up if you're quarterstaff spec'd.

Spears just don't have a role in the current meta, especially for ARCH which usually has a max % debuff. You aren't clapping anyone with a 60% debuff so it's better to have stuff that has % based damage like dual sword or siegebow or weapons with other utility like bleeds from halberd or the aforementioned soulscythe which isn't affected by the debuff as badly.

The heron spear would get badly mitigated by the CC duration debuff anyway. I think last season the only vague spear use in zvz was some people who tried to harpoon galatine clappers to kill them because the previous debuff was like clapper heaven but those times have passed thankfully. gently caress getting one shot by a weeping mine.

is there a niche for small groups beyond simply ganking yet? I'd love to be a 'thorn' in the side of the largest guild via hit and run tactics, but it seems no one needs to go out in the open world for anything, and 90% of players out there are ganking or intentionally looking for pvp.

there's nothing wrong with going solo in dangerous zones for gathering purposes.

if and only if you do not give anyone else that's PVP enabled the benefit of the doubt.

someone's red and dips into the area you're harvesting? mount up and get the gently caress out. do not ever assume good faith in red zones.

same for black zones except it's just avoid all contact.
and if you're running from one and start seeing more people in the direction you're going, go perpendicular if possible or just hope and go back the way you came because you're definitely going to die if you're solo and run straight into a ganking squad.

/also go cheap on your equipment, only the bare minimum. don't wander into the black zones entirely leveraged on your inventory lol

EDIT: probably the best way for a small group to have impact in ZvZ now is to bomb stupid people waiting for cluster queue at the exits. Like ten people could kill so many idiots who just tab out afk at the zone waiting to get in. Especially if you're killing ARCH.

First week of being in the guild/alliance was fun. Thanks for anyone who put up with my newb questions regarding ZvZ or ganking groups, and melee builds.

The only questions I have I asked a bit in guild chat, but could use some guidance.
I've spent about 6m since I joined, gearing up and replacing sets if I did die running content. I guess I should be looting during gank groups because I haven't been, but that's my fault.

What's the best way to get silver to continue being able to do ZvZ/gank defense content? The only thing I used to do as a solo was gather/refine, and solo dungeon.

It's hard to say, you can scout dungeons for alliance fame groups, they pay quite nicely per dungeon. Gathering is always good but more difficult with how populated things are now. Looting ZvZs and doing gank groups is quite profitable but also difficult to compete with others. You can flip items between cities, this is where a lot of silver is made but is pretty boring to figure out.

I made most of my silver doing gathering and looting gank/zvz content.

If you are losing 6m worth of sets in ZvZ come in lower spec or a different build. Locus/heals are always needed and don't require high tier gear.

Locus is a great way to learn how zvzs work. You're in plate so you're durable and should be up near the front anyway, a good locus on a choke helps people push and/or covers a counterbomb, it doesn't take a ton of spec into it to get what you need (hell if you want to beam it takes very little, I just prefer motivating cleanse which requires 40) and people will help you out with gear with it if you show interest in playing it. It's also more forgiving on the wallet if you don't because there's not a ton of difference between a 4.2 or so locus versus a high spec locus. I think the difference between flat 4 and 8.3 masterpiece is like 20 seconds? Which is great, don't get me wrong but nobody is taking an 8.3 MP out unless they're a massive swiper or captain moneybags.

What’s the general etiquette for looting in ZvZ and gank squads? Sounds like ZvZ is FFA (as long as you’re there participating) and squads will be different based on the group?

Are the healing/locust builds pinned anywhere in disc or on a website somewhere?

I’ve got a t4 frost mage spec and t4 doubleblade staff spec, just got T5 reaver last night. Just about feeling ready to get into the black zone stuff, I’ll probably hoof out to GMK tonight (is that still the main staging place).

How feasible is it for a new player in ARCH to solely focus on PVP? The crafting stuff seems neat but in a PVP MMO id prefer to do as little PVE as required - hoping my plan of buying a few sets and rolling from there will work out.

Stanos

Very dependent on group. For the crew I'm in it's generally 'take one or two items, don't be a dick' and we split bigger stuff after the gank session is over but for bigger gank parties it tends to be free for all as long as you're not macrolooting the entire body.

For ZvZ combat looting is technically frowned upon but very rarely actively policed unless you make it a problem. With all the people down there you probably aren't getting poo poo unless you're fast or a macrolooter though.

Builds are in discord under zvz builds. A good fairly cheap locus build would be mercenary hood, demon armor, scholar shoes, martlock cape. Use omelettes and resilience/giant pots. It's open to different choices, like you could use judicator armor but it's more expensive or armor of valor but it's also expensive and more of a selfish choice. What mainly matters is plate since arcane doesn't really scale for poo poo on anything you'd use in a zvz so you want to be as durable as possible.

You don't need to pve much if you don't want to. You will probably get cluster queue'd out of big zvz fights first but if you just wanna join your closest 20 friends in killing some poor idiot on a t3 ox it doesn't take much investment to get there. Personally if you have premium I think you should pick something to refine if you aren't interested in crafting. You get 10k focus a day, it's dumb to have it overflow and waste it on watering crops or something. It's free silver once you pick something.

This is where I’m leaning mostly, on daily silver grinding. I’m almost to t7 ore gather/refining and figure that should pay for a lot of my pvp in the long run.
