It actually can be surprisingly hard to move to Canada but if you actually want to your best bet is to do a university or college (i.e. community college) degree here and qualify for the post-grad work visa. The good news is schools are going to be super desperate for international students really soon because they're a big moneymaker. The bad news is you'll be paying like 4 times the tuition as a local. Still might be cheaper that school in the US thanks to the dollar being in the toilet though!

Otherwise your only option really is to get a company to sponsor you and lol at that happening in this economy. It can be a loving nightmare even when times are good and there's legitimate gaps in the workforce.

It's a lot easier for Europeans to move here and get residency because reciprocal working holiday visas count as qualifying work experience but for some reason the US doesn't want to have one of those with Canada

I’m a pilot. I’m mega turbo hosed on being valuable enough to sponsor anytime soon.

The gas station (we call them servos in Australia) down the street from me has a similar thing, except when you bring your snacks to the counter they have the scanner pushed all the way across to the customer side so we can scan our own items, the clerk doesn't even come near them. Their EFTPOS machine also has "tap and go" so I just hold my debit card above it and the payment goes through without having to touch anything.

what about medical poo poo? im in school (or was. waiting to get back in in a couple of semesters) to be an xray tech and was hoping that would be my ticket into Canada. I was a surg tech before but I read that there isn't a surg tech position in Canada, the nurses do that poo poo.

Yeah the US has a lot more random non-doctor medical specialties. Like CRNAs aren't a thing up here, dosimetry duties are done by RTs instead of separate dosimetrists, etc...

As far as I know there really isn't a shortage of imaging techs up here so I doubt you'd be able to nab a direct job sponsorship through that. They'd have to go through a whole process justifying why they can't find a Canadian for the job (which thanks to a few major corporations abusing the process years ago is a lot tougher these days). Regardless you'd be running face first into a lot of horrible Conservative provincial government healthcare cuts. Hiring freezes, etc... It's made this whole COVID thing real fun...

However double checking, if the program qualifies you specifically as a Medical Radiation Technician you might qualify to apply for Permanent Residency under the Federal Skilled Worker program! I'd forgotten there's multiple Express Entry programs and the one year of Canadian experience is just for the Canadian Experience pathway. You still need at least a year of non-Canadian experience though.

https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/eligibility/federal-skilled-workers.html

Basically you need a score 67/100 on admission factors to qualify for the FSW program, then you'd get put into the general Comprehensive Ranking System. You can get an idea of the points you'd get for that with this tool:

My local Chinese place has basically built an airlock in their entryway. A 3'x3' square "lobby" of plywood walls with a counter and a tiny plexiglass door. Cup comes out; credit card goes in the cup and back in; food, credit card, and receipt come out.

I really hope they have the plywood hinged on the staff side, because their other door is on the far side of the kitchen.

I feel like there should be some kind of "board of physicians", who when they see 600 physicians say something like this, would be able to quickly make them not licensed physicians anymore. Do that once or twice and maybe medical personnel would think twice before making statements that harm public health? Or is that a pipe dream?

quote:

“The downstream health effects...are being massively under-estimated and under-reported. This is an order of magnitude error," according to the letter initiated by Simone Gold, M.D., an emergency medicine specialist in Los Angeles.

“Suicide hotline phone calls have increased 600%,” the letter said. Other silent casualties: “150,000 Americans per month who would have had new cancer detected through routine screening.”
Patients fearful of visiting hospitals and doctors’ offices are dying because COVID-phobia is keeping them from seeking care. One patient died at home of a heart attack rather than go to an emergency room. The number of severe heart attacks being treated in nine U.S hospitals surveyed dropped by nearly 40% since March. Cardiologists are worried “a second wave of deaths” indirectly caused by the virus is likely.

The physicians’ letter focuses on the impact on Americans’ physical and mental health. “The millions of casualties of a continued shutdown will be hiding in plain sight, but they will be called alcoholism, homelessness, suicide, heart attack, stroke, or kidney failure. In youths it will be called financial instability, unemployment, despair, drug addiction, unplanned pregnancies, poverty, and abuse.

Thanks for linking this. Its most of what I've been fearing might actually be the case. We all knew suicides are up and that heart attacks are being missed. But its crazy to think of the numbers of cancer missed. Or sexual abuse at home. Or domestic violence.

The fact that its an easy choice for many to make on here (to stay home indefinitely) says a lot about the affluence and safety in the homes of many posters.

It was a surprise to me when I bought something for $190 earlier today and did the tap-and-go out of routine, and then it said "done!" instead of asking for my pin. A good surprise, though. My parents have finally started using contactless too. I would say RIP cash but I feel like we've been too successful here for small stuff like that to last. As much as I have enjoyed patient spread-out queueing and people giving way in supermarket aisles.

Though I live regionally, it's all pretty relaxed here now, I have no idea what it's like in built-up places that have concepts like 'rush hour traffic' where you have to get close to strangers.

gently caress off, idiot. Lockdowns haven't prevented anyone from calling an ambulance for a heart attack. People are afraid to go to hospitals because they don't want to catch a deadly virus, not because social isolation prevents them from seeking medical attention.
