Exploration is ill-advised.
Actually does make me wonder how many other games would work with stage editors like this. I think Mega Man is the other one that'd work because his original games are very formulaic and built around specific building blocks rather than unique setpieces for the most part. And there was ALMOST a Mega Man Maker iirc, but Capcom hates money.

They should roll up the New SMB and 3D World styles into one. They look basically exactly the same, and restricting the clear pipes and yellow switch blocks to one style is supremely irritating. Also I can never remember whether I have a long jump or not on any given level.

If I upload my world 1 ahead of time, nobody is gonna have the energy to play through it again when I'm done with world 2!

I feel like Nintendo could easily make a Zelda maker, they just... don't for some reason? Maybe they feel there isn't enough tools for players to make new interesting dungeons, but people do a lot with relatively very little in Mario Maker, and the top down tile based thing Zelda does would lend itself so well to a maker. I dunno why they don't do it.

And like I'm not even talking about making a full adventure, you really only need to be able to make dungeons. People were so excited when they teased the thing for the Links Awakening remake but that didn't turn out to be anything like a Zelda maker

With how bad people are at making Mario levels I think making decent Zelda dungeons would be way too complex

I messed around with the Link's Awakening one a lot and that was kind of exhausting even with them basically just giving you already completed rooms to string together

Give me a tetris maker where you can design custom block sets and rules.

Also, my MM3 wish list includes beefing up the world features, like more stages per world, multiple exits per stage, and secret levels/worlds. Bring in a switch block palace equivalent that individual levels check when being loaded, so you could tie different parts of a world together and make progression less linear.

I'd love it if they kind of locked down the style from one level to the next (like if you started making mario 3 levels, and put them in a world, that world will only allow Mario 3 levels) so you could keep your power ups. Maybe that's too complicated for this and sacrifices too much of what they want to do with it, no idea.

With the update dropping right around the same time as Final Fantasy 7 and Animal Crossing I haven't had much time to work on levels with the new stuff, but I've been slowly chipping away at a few ideas. Here's the first one I've managed to complete.


Frog Grenade [40s]
Course ID: N7P-LPN-ORF
Difficulty: Expert


This is one of those levels where I thought of the name first and then figured out a gimmick to go with it. I've never done a speedrun level before and it turns out they're kind of a pain in the rear end to make! I don't know how some people crank out three of these drat things a day. I tried to avoid the common problem these levels have where you feel like you should have made a jump or avoided an obstacle but you were somehow one pixel off what the creator had tuned it to so I was constantly going back and readjusting things just to give the player the slightest of room for error. Then I had to trim a little fat because I was clocking in at 41 seconds and wanted players to hit the goal with 0 seconds to spare. Ultimately I think it turned out alright but I doubt I'll be doing another one like this.

Thanks for playing my last two levels! Your playthrough taught me a number of things that I kind of forgot to consider. Namely, that most people won't remember the many cool things you can do with the dry bones shell. Like, you can stay dead a little longer if you press down after jumping.

Thanks so much for playing this! I'm going to show my son the video in a bit.

Regarding the checkpoint right before the Koopa fight, a few things:

A) there ARE power ups hidden, one which you almost found in the room with the flag, and another by the door in the previous room. I left the first door accessible for backtracking.

2) even though I tend to hide the power ups in levels I make or help with, I'm always fair, no exception. I aim for traditional Mario levels, nowhere near kaizo stuff (I know you weren't saying the level was like that, of course)

D) you should have seen the original plan for the level, designed by a 5 year old, without my input or help :stare:

Anyway, if anyone else wants to give it a try, one more thing; there even a hidden power up at the very beginning, which will help you in the first area of the castle. Good luck, and thanks again!

Here are three more stages of questionable value!

6NY-KCX-LRG - Questionable Jumps Threw this together in just a few minutes, just some simple jumps off of winged ? blocks, nothing special.

JR0-YBV-5TG - Hammer Castle Use the goomba hat to grab the key and then defeat the hammer bros! Maybe medium difficulty?

0MV-351-FGF - Cannonball Run Apparently the records for the actual Cannonball Run, a race from the east to the west coast of the US, are being broken by magical modern cars and magical empty roads. In this stage there are cannonballs, and you can press the button to run, and that's about it for similarities. I uploaded this before going to bed thinking it should be a nice expert level difficulty type stage, and woke up this morning to 0 clears out of over a hundred, so I reuploaded it with some additional annoying sounds and a moved CP. Previously it was probably a little too soon, right before a little section that involves picking up a small cannonball and ending up standing on the one next to it.

I think another wishlist item for me is more CPs per substage? I don't like putting a flag before a pipe or door so each time you try again you have to do that transition..

I tried this again after giving up this morning. The checkpoint placement does seem better although I don't know how much of the stage I had left. While like a lot of the ideas I did have to give up again as I still find it far too punishing to die. I can make it to the part with the key but then I die, and I just got way too sick of repeating the slow section up to that point to continue. It'd be more tolerable if you sectioned things off a bit and allow for reset doors and power up refreshes at the start of a new challenge. Another thing that needs work is that floating POW block section. There's no way anybody is going to catch that on their first try without knowing it's coming and you then have to jump all the way back down and ride the slow cannons back up in order to reset the blue platforms.

Guess I'll just spill it since it's kind of amusing anyway: There is a hidden Pow block in the cape section. In order to clear CP1, you have to escort the Pow block through the section (including not letting any Magikoopas shoot it) and kill the boss to access the dev pipe. The dev pipe sends you to a room with giant "DEV EXIT" text, some sounds warning you off of your impending terrible decision, and a pipe that sends you to the start of the level. (You can't go back in.)

The next re-upload will have a fake pipe at the end designed to make it look like that's where it goes (instead of the fake pipe at the sub world CP).

At the start of the level, you can jump at a specific time (about a half-second window) to get a spring, which lets you access the dev puzzle. The dev puzzle takes about 2 minutes, and you can solve it via trial and error, but most of the things you can do are booby traps that will either prevent you from completing the puzzle, or trap you in the puzzle room. If done correctly, it will give you a fire flower (which lets you take one extra hit on Morton) and flip the switch state, which triggers the mercy key.

I played a version of this level in the morning, and the version that's up right now is indeed improved. It always had good ideas and good execution, but now its less punishing to screw up after the check point. Good polish on it, too.

This was a cool rear end stage. Great concept and it was rad transitioning between swimming and running sections. The frog suit can be a little frustratingly "slippery" when precision is required at high speeds, but you did indeed give players just enough leeway in movement to avoid this while keeping the sense of tension high.

This one has been sitting in the coursebot since the update dropped. I wanted to do something with the Koopalings but didn't have any level ideas that involved boss fights so I just did a boss rush stage. I've always had a hard time coming up with boss ideas and since I wanted it to be themed around flight power ups and gadgets I was even more restricted, so I've just been chipping away at this one as ideas came to mind.
