been reading this thread on my day off from being a CPA who does taxes. you want to set up a corporation, which you can probably do on like legal zoom I’m not a lawyer. from there you can get an EIN online as a tax ID, which you will need later. you probably want to set up a separate bank account for the charity, which you can do with a tax ID. once you’ve got an EIN, you need to fill out Form 1023, which is an application to be recognized as a 501(3)(c) (if you anticipate having under $50,000 of receipts, you can do a 1023-ez). from there, just keep track of your donations and then your disbursements. saving emails/pms of goons asking for money is probably the best way. then just don’t do fraud or crime, and file a form 990/990ez every year and you’re set. here’s a good guide from the irs: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/application-process

I hate asking for help, I was brought up with a good ol' Protestant "earn yer keep" work ethic (like, literally a minister's daughter). But I'm a a restaurant worker (cook) who lost her job back in March, and there's zero jobs in my area right now. We actually have a sensible governor in my state that's keeping everything closed --- and for good reason! But it sucks for me. Anyways, I'm getting evicted on July 1st, and I don't know what the gently caress I'm gonna do. I could deal with living out of my 2001 Cavalier, but it's my cat I'm worried about. We need to find a place, or at least appease the loving landlord with some pittance that I just don't have. Even if some folks could help fund a script for a pair of new glasses, then I could apply for a delivery job. But my eyes suck, too, and my 7 year old glasses got destroyed working over deep-fryers for the last few years. And while I can squint my way thru a kitchen job, I can't see poo poo while driving. Big ups to all the goons who have helped out itt, and if anyone can point me to resources for getting an optometrist on the cheap, maybe I could take up that Papa Johns (uuuugh) ad. They say they're paying $12/hr, which is p dec in our area.

Thanks y'all. I'm aware of how cheap Zenni and other sites are, but even if I had my old script, they wouldn't do poo poo; I'm in my mid 40's and probably need bifocals. (Keeping with the CSPAM mood, I learned this while doing door-to-door political canvassing. I had to keep flipping my glasses up and down between squinting at house numbers, then looking down at my clipboard and holding it at arms' length.) I can't see things far away like street signs, but I also now can't read text right in front of my face. I really need to see an optometrist and get a new script. Will PM you, Plinkey, and thanks for all you (and the contributors in this thread) have done.

Thanks to Plinkey and all contributors to this fund (you are all angels), the greater chunk of the amount I need has been knocked back which is no mean feat in this current historically lovely moment in time where so many are hurting. Ugh. I really hate doing this. I'm recently unemployed (due to COVID-19 layoffs at my company) and probably still 2-3 weeks away from receiving any unemployment benefits. I have sold everything I can and even tried to use one of those payday lending places (interest rate 500+ percent) just to try to make it through the next two weeks, but of course they turned me down as I have no income. ANYTHING goon socialism can provide would help. Honestly, a small short-term loan that I could pay back (with interest!) would be ideal, as I can do so as soon as I receive my first unemployment check. I promise to contribute to the goon fund as soon as I'm able. Thank you so much.

I sent an email... I'm in absolute poo poo, some hosed up choices are being made rn and I'm not seeing much light possible anywhere in sight in a long tunnel... My situation has been increasingly hosed up in the past weeks and contemplating homeless resources now as my wife and I have basically exploded. Lockdown got toxic as gently caress near the end.
