Re: this contact tracing system. I've seen it described as a self-isolation "order", but I've more widely seen it phrased as people "will be asked to self-isolate", people "should avoid leaving their home for any reason", people "will be told to stay at home", etc. Are there any plans to actually enforce this at all? Or is it all based on the honors system? Because I know at least a dozen people for whom sticking to their own voluntary personal lockdown whilst completely healthy will be impossible, and maybe a half dozen more who literally won't be able to afford to take such measures if they're only being paid a fraction of what they need to pay the bills, especially if they're asked to self-isolate for 2wks multiple times (I'm assuming there'll be no extra financial support from government and employees will only get SSP at £95.85/wk, or £0 if they're self-employed)

I saw Geoff Capes tear a phonebook in half when I was about four. I didn't know who he was but I remember my sister complaining bitterly that he "bent it and stuff" before tearing it. It made a really distinctive noise. I totally forgot the event until about three years ago when I heard the noise in my dreams, sat up in bed and loudly said "GEOFF CAPES". My wife still brings it up occasionally.

I also just read in the guardian that this Cummings fellow used to work for the spectator until quote:However, biographies of Cummings often overlook his brief journalism career at the Spectator. In 2006 the future prime ministerial aide left his position as the magazine’s online boss after he briefly published a cartoon on the Spectator’s website of the prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban, following the lead of a Danish newspaper which had prompted an international row about the limits of free speech. I'm beginning to think there might be an undercurrent of racism in these rarified posho circles?

Schools went back weeks ago, though they did close them a week before we did. Switzerland banned public gatherings over 1000 people from 28th of Feb, at which point there were less than 20 recorded cases. Local authorities could decide on banning smaller gatherings. They also closed the border to Italy at some point. Some harder hit areas enforced strict measures IIRC but overall Switzerland escaped being in the group of worst-hit countries with what measures they did put in + the timing.

Closed stadiums though so it's only going to be dozens of people travelling around the country rather than thousands. Still a bad idea though unless whatever accommodation they stay in is sterile and secure. I guess it might get a few idiots to stay home on the weekends rather than socialising? Probably more than ruined by watch parties though.

I think the general strategy now is pulling everything forward both to cover for their mistakes of the past and with the mistaken idea that if X measures are dropped then as the contagion spreads again people will be happy with only restoring X/2 measures to tackle them. Nothing should be getting relaxed until cases are lower, tracking is better and unions agree with whatever the proposals are.

"The Senedd has decided not to provide emergency funding to support them." That's my Welsh government! I don't know what the fuckers actually do. The only money to be made here is from tourism. And those are hosed. Wonder how bad it's going to get. For an example of Welsh governing: Colwyn Bay council vacillated on whether to fix it's famous pier for two decades until it just fell apart in a storm one day. Some interesting stuff in the ONS survey today, though I don't understand it nearly well enough to meaningfully assess it. Based on their samples, they're estimating 133,000 cases in England between 11/05 and 24/05, with the asymptomatic rate being 79%. That's asymptomatic on the day of testing though.

I was told today that my employer won't be continuing to furlough me past the end of July. There might be some work appearing soon that will mean I can come back to work from furlough then but as it stands I have been given 2 months' notice. This is likely to be happening to everyone who works here. I expected this as there is no work to do apart from a skeleton crew so there is no money to pay for even a 20% contribution. I suspect this is deliberate to force people out of work onto UC and that later they will revert the furlough scheme to its original form but disqualify us from being brought back onto furlough. Some of you may remember I had been receiving threats from other employees about my union activity. Nothing ever came from that but the majority of people just accepted the paycut so it was imposed on everyone who didn't get furloughed. Word is some departments stuck together and are not receiving paycuts. We were planning on buying a house this year but now I expect most of the deposit will be going to our landlord instead. Hopefully now filming is slowly starting up around the world they are able to get enough stuff recorded to keep us busy during the second wave. Or will the Snyder Cut save me?
