Well i'm happy, dont give a drat about the platform and have no beef with Epic, it's a free total war game and if it plays really well vanilla like Warhammer I dont mind the lack of mods or at least i dont mind having to manually apply them like old total war games pre steam workshop. Plus if it's that good of a game I can get my fill out of the free version then when it comes out on steam buy it in a sale for the convenience of steam mods.

I think this was a smart decision, likely they believe that it wouldnt sell that well as it's setting doesn't have mass appeal and if it turns out to be a great game then word of mouth will allow it to flourish years after release like Warhammer 2 has done with lots of people still buying it. I think Bretonnia was a bit of a flop and they're trying to avoid that again.

I really didn't care about Troy anyway and likely wouldnt have bought it unless i heard it was amazing from folks here, tbh the only thing i'm really interested in is if they've made siege battles actually fun and judging by the trailer that seems to be a major focus, that can only bode well for future TW games.

edit: I get people have beef with the Epic store for many reasons that i'm not going to dismiss but I also think it's good that Steam has competition, yes the Epic store isnt perfect at the moment but I still use it daily and have no real issues with it, and steam is full of poo poo like hentai games, thousands of utter garbage titles etc, it certainty isn't perfect, it's obviously functions better than Epic but Epic has been adding more functionality albeit slower than they probably should be. I imagine mod support for games and other features are on their way.

double edit: also if CA got a boatload of money from this deal that will go towards Warhammer 3's development then good

This isn’t competition, though. Or at least not the kind that benefits consumers. Epic didn’t create some awesome proprietary feature they’re using to give people a reason to buy games on their platform. They’re just giving a lot of money to the publisher to not release it on one specific store for a year and instead release a worse version of the game on theirs.

Despite being called a monopoly for years now Steam is still the only PC platform that innovates anything.

because epic gave them a bunch of money to do it, and giving away free games is part of epic's strategy to get more people using their platform (I'm still surprised to see it with a totally new game from a major publisher though)

Is Steam really still innovative these last few years though? Whilst I get the beef people have with Epic over them gaining exclusivity over certain games, that's what steam has done for years at this point, it's just prior to other stores like Origin or Epic there was no other competition so if you wanted certain games, in fact the majority of large pc releases, you had to install steam. A company doesn't have to be innovative for me to purchase their products, or use their service, I shop on amazon because it's easy to use and it has what I want, and if they have exclusive rights to some product i'm not going to fault them, it's a business tactic that works. Why boycott one when the other is just as egregious? Epic doing the same is probably the smartest way and maybe only way they could really draw enough users from Steam. Steam is just as soulless as epic but we're so used to it at this point it doesn't matter.

Also competition comes in many forms, for example it can benefit those who are employed by Epic or Steam who create and maintain this sort of digital distribution, if there is competition, those companies might improve their employee conditions to appeal to future hires to prevent them from joining a rival company in the same field. Amazon is utter poo poo in that department because it knows it's not losing it's warehouse workers to another massive conglomerate.

I dont buy the idea that it makes the publisher release a worst version of a game on their platform, that's solely down to the publisher who knows the quality of the game they're releasing. If anything if people are mad about this they should boycott future CA games for accepting the deal. If it splits the player base for multiplayer etc so be it, but that happens all the time when games are released on PC, Xbox and PS4, or released early on a console and later on PC.

Except this game is only releasing on PC. Why the multiplayer scenes got to be split is a real :iiam: but it doesn't really add a lot of value to the Epic version.

e.: I'm really glad CA is presumably getting oodles of money for the deal to be this specific (not bothering with multiplayer integration, mod support whenever Intern Vladim over at Epic gets around to adding the feature to the platform) but I hope it was because they had low confidence post-Thrones and decided they might as well get a kind of soft Early-Access on the EGS + bonus funds. I don't think a Thrones-tier reception is going to translate to good sales when the Steam version hits.

If you really like CA by all means grab the free version and then spring for the Steam version a year later when it drops, this maximizes the gains CA makes overall.

Yea i mean it does suck that those who are big into the multiplayer will suffer. Based on the CA blog post they seem to want to release future TW games on Epic store and hopefully after Troy they'll find a way to enable cross play, because if you have say Warhammer 3 releasing on Steam and Epic at the same time, they should really find a way to make that work by that point.

Basically every major game that went Epic has some really weird issues that would have hurt it's sales naturally. Metro was a super weak Metro game, Worlds was largely incomplete, Control had the awful ending/"will be expanded in the DLC. DLC is exclusive to Ps4 for a year." business implying they ran out of cash. Really the list goes on.

I basically read this as they wrote TROY off. People weren't getting hyped enough, they don't have faith in it, and they are trying to recoup the losses. That's the Epic guarantee. It's the Early Access of game stores. Don't have faith in a product? Epic is desperate, they'll shoot you enough to cover the loss, and you just have to do some light makeup with your community.

Don't expect much in the way for DLC/post launch support. Ashen is a great example of this. They originally planned DLC for every companion, but nobody really buys games on Epic ( sub 2k leaderboards for Zombie Army/Maneater imply as much ), and so they lost most of their exclusivity paycheck making a DLC nobody bought, and then cancelled all the remaining DLC. The Phoenix Point devs are also trying to weasel out of completing the DLC they promised. Each was supposed to be a War of the Chosen style expansion, but are instead turning into light reskins and maybe a few new weapons.

My hope is they just dump TROY and take the money for building up WH3.

They seemed to have lost confidence in the idea of Sagas after Thrones, and there's a been a lot of criticism of them for how they're handling the mythological units in Troy, so I can see why they made this deal. Also Sagas seem to be used as a live testing ground for new potential features for their big releases, so I'm cool with this.

I don't think they lost confidence, but rather somebody at management knows exactly what to expect from Troy and this Epic move was just a way for them to break even on the game and ride out this pandemic period. After seeing the trailer today, I doubt anybody is actually hyped about the game. It looks made by the B team, while their main people are probably doing Warhammer 3 or something. I don't care about the EGS thing as long as Warhammer 3 won't be an exclusive.

I don't know what internal issues CA is going through, but a couple of things seem obvious. The talent is still there given that 3K was good and the recent DLC and FLC content for Warhammer 2 has been solid but unpolished (usually it ships with two campaigns and one is innovative and well made, while the other is kind of uninspired B content). They don't have the talent or manpower to do everything they set out to do, and on the QA side things are dire. The latest patch for Warhammer 2 broke the combat system last week by screwing up the weapon damage for all units in the game. Plus there exists a whole host of older issues like Norsca lords having the wrong skill tree, the new Orc hero not having any voice lines, the AI raiding itself etc. Maybe COVID hit them hard somewhere, but their QA is almost non-existent right now (not that it was great before, remember how long it took to patch the pirate cove crash bug). This also coincided poorly with the game going on sale over the weekend and the developers going "oh well, there was a bank holiday in the UK so we only had 4 days of work since the DLC, maybe we'll fix some of these next week" (they did release a hotfix but only for the weapon damage thing on the beta branch on Monday).

So while I think that Warhammer 3 will probably be great, I have little faith in any other side projects CA is doing, like Troy or the card game.

Maybe CA shouldn't have taken a deal with EG if they didn't want The Something Awful Forums > Discussion > Games > Total War: Do not cycle charge Lu Bu! thread to talk about EG. :smug:

People will moan for a bit, I know I will, then they'll moan when it's out and the modding scene doesn't hop to fixing issues with the speed they might have on Steam, and I think that'll be that. Just comes with the territory, I guess.

Imagine if this had been the announcement for TW:W3 or the next major historic game, instead! :v:

Saga games are basically B-tier by design, which is cool because they sell them for less and experiment with systems. It’s extremely understandable that they take a big chunk of cash upfront and don’t have to worry about it afterwards. Plus this way they’ll get a loving ton of people to at least download the game.

It’d be insane to do this with a mainline title, but I certainly don’t blame them here. And being upfront with the messaging is appreciated.

I have legitimate beef with EGS as a third-worlder but also ToB, I'm assuming, sold like absolute dogshit, and so far they've been using Saga games as testbeds for new gameplay paradigms and whatnot. Considering that on release it's literally going to be free, this is a pretty cunning move from CA if they anticipate gently caress-all interest in Troy. And considering that there's been gently caress-all marketing for Troy since it was announced, they're probably on to something, and might as well get the payday from Epic while they test out poo poo.

Yeah.

Even if I didn't have a distaste for Epic, basically all of their store's exclusives have had some major issue or red flag about them that became apparent after release. The only one that didn't was, what, the Outer Wilds? And a bunch were deeply flawed in a number of ways, which is the diplomatic way of saying bad. Troy being an EGS exclusive feels less like a credit to the Epic store itself and more a sign that Troy's getting written off by CA. Really, any new Epic exclusive is going to have as many people wondering what's wrong with it as it will have people looking forward to it.
